Did I Move Too Soon?

100 player tournament and there 16 players left. Blinds are 200 - 400 and moving up to 300 - 600 in another couple hands. I only have 1200 left. I get dealt AJ suited;

The chip leader is UTG and bets out 1000. He has raised most pots to get rid of the limpers and collect the blinds. The only shorter stack then me goes all-in and I decide to go as well hoping to triple up. If I call the chip leader is going to put me all-in anyway.

Showdown;
Me and the other short stack flip over AJ, except mine is suited, chip leader shows KQ off. I like my chances!

Flop helps neither of them but hits 2 of my hearts,

Turn is nothing;

River ( I need a heart to win or avoid a K or Q to split). Queen, I am done.

I think it was the right move given my chip count and tournament position. Was it right or should have I waited out a couple more hands hoping to be going heads up against a single hand and not calling when I know I've got to beat out 2 players to survive?

  • the odds of u getting something better then that hand are slim. i would of done the same thing.

    You need to avoid a K or Q to win, right? Ace-high beats King-high.

    I would have played it the same.

    Well you could try and tell the other shortstack that your Suited AJ is better than his offsuit AJ, but I dont think he'll buy it..
  • I neede to avoid the K or Q to split as the other short stack had an AJ also. A heart would have made my flush.

    Thanks for the input.
  • he splits the other allin has AJ too

    well i guess im not as quick to respond as others
  • I think it's a great spot to be pushing, well played
