Casino Windsor report

Hey all,

Just got back from Casino Windsor and I thought I'd share some thoughts and impressions.

The Poker room itself is located in a far away corner on the second level of casino games. After giving the casino a brief tour, I headed to the welcome window to sign up. The room looks like it was a converted staff lounge or something, well lit, out of the way of all other games, so the only sound you hear are chips rattling. The room is also smoke free which is really nice; the same can't be said for the hallway.

There were 10 tables in the room and after I hunted around I found the board which listed the games they spread...

3 tables of 3-6 Limit
2 tables of 5-10 Limit
1 table of 10-20 Limit
3 tables of 100Max NL
1 table of 200min, 500max NL, which I think turned later into 500 min

The 3-6 list looked to be 40 people long, but my original plan was to play 5-10 which had a still large waiting list of 25-30 people. In fact, all the tables had long lists and the average wait time was about 2.5 hours. With time to spare, I travelled to all the various bars and had a few beers. No real selection to speak of.

At one point, while checking back to see where I was on the list, I overheard this coversation between the gal taking down names and a guy who was trying to sign-up

Guy: Hi. I'd like to play.
Gal: Which table would you like to play at?
Guy: I just want to play Hold'em
Gal: Yes. But you have to pick a tables.
Guy: What's your cheapest one?
Gal: We have three to six dollar.
Guy: Do you have anything around twenty dollars?
Gal: Yes, we have ten to twenty, would you like a seat there.
Guy: Sure.

I then stepped in and made sure he was put on the correct list. Our conversation went something like.

Me: No. No. The 3/6 are the limits, not the buy in.
Guy: Limits?
Me: Hey! Wouldn't it be cool if we were at the same table!

I also took note of him and hoped to see him later, but didn't. Seeing him there, lifted my spirits.

Eventually I sat down and played for about 4 hours, netting +$40 for the evening, which should have been much more. The play was very loose passive, with people easily scarred off. Some hands of note.

#1) SB with 66. 5 limpers to me, I complete. Flop JJ6! I check, EP bets $5, folds to MP who raises to $10. (I know where at least one Jack is!) I call, EP calls.
Turn: 6!!!! I check, EP bets $10, MP raises to $20, there's no way the J will get away from the boat so I re-raise to $30. EP thinks and mucks claiming to have laid down a Jack later. MP calls.
River is a brick, I bet $10, MP raises to $20 mentioning something about chopping the pot. I simply smile back and re-raises. He calls, I turn over my hand the table goes mild and I pull in a nice sized pot.

#2) A few hands later, I flop a nut straight, I get a lot of action and am quickly up +$140.

Over the next few hours, I get crap, and loose a couple two pair off the flop to rivered flush hands and eventually find my self down $10. At this point, a bunch of people leave at once and for about 15 minutes, the tables goes to 5 and 6 handed.

My Party Poker skills came into affect and I immediately switched gears to loose aggressive like I do when a table at Party starts breaking up. The table wasn't prepared for the switch to short-handed play and I make up a lot of lost ground. My stack went up and down around even until I hit my last big hand of the night..

#3) I'm in MP with K2d. Three callers to me, so I limp in. A raise behind me is met with a couple of cold callers and I complete with 7 of us seeing the flop.
Flop: 997. No diamonds. Checked to me, I check, checked all around.
Turn: Q. Checked to me and I paused for a moment. If the nine wasn't out there I thought I could represent it. Plus, I *really* got the feeling that all 6 other players missed the board, so I did my best "I really don't want to bet but I guess I'll reluctantly since I've got the nuts" look and decided to ignore everything I've learned about implicit collusion and how you should never bluff in low limit holdem and bet $10. The first player to act said, "Nice try" and folded. Players continued to folded, all the way to the small blind, who called, and two of us see the river.
River: 5. SB checks and I know he doesn't have trips. The player in the SB would bet out with made hands and rarely played deceptively. Although the SB was getting the odds to call any bet, I convinved myself that the only way I could win was by betting. So I did, the SB thought for a minute, then folded and I took a sweet $100 pot!

Players at the table were of varied skill level (most below average), and I was reminded of playing 1/2 Limit at Party quite often during the night. I think the most appalling thing I saw was that 4 or 5 seperate players would sit down with only $100 on the table! A few would bust out then buy back in for another $100. Wierd.

The only dissapointment I has was sitting on the wrong side of a player who would constantly three and four bet hands like A4o and 33. It was insane how bad this player was, but won a lot of lucky pots. He was also happy to give me some poker lessons which just proved how badly I wanted to be on HIS left. (Advice like, "sometimes, you got to slow down and not play hands like 35" or "Start by playing tight then when you win a few pots start playing every hand." Thanks, man. How about we switch seats?)

I was also disappointed in the fact that, like stp's satellite tournament, there was a lot of hot women playing, but none of the them were at my table. :(

All in all, I found the dealers fine and the place was run ok, given they opened a week earlier. There's defiantely a hunger for Hold'em in Windsor and I hear the rumor is to expand to 25 tables in order to play host to a CPT event. I'll definately be back on my next trip to the city.

  • sounds like you had fun, ive been to windsor casino a couple times but never managed to play poker, its a pretty nice casino except for the smoking part of it. Just wondering how much money you brought with you to the tables? ive never played at a casino before and just wondering what a good amount to bring to start with
  • As a general rule of thumb, I like to sit down with 50x the lower limit. So, on a 5-10 table I brought $250.
