Dave...How In Heck Do You Win At Poker?

Hey Dave,
I play a lot of Hold'em, I like to think I have a firm understanding of a few books I've read a lot and studied...(WLLH by Lee Jones,HPFAP by Skaklansky Malmuth) tons of pratice with friends etc, I have the standard 300bb bankroll, playing .50/$1, seeing the flop and average of 26% of the time. (according to my poker stars logs)

I played for three hours today(my first "real" day playing online Poker Stars with proper bankroll requirements) and am down $40.50, I went back for a short session and made some of it back, it was close to a -$56, I felt I was going to far with my hands was the only mistake i was making today and playing half decent in terms of picking which hole cards i was playing with, now probably making more mistakes than that.

Anyway, just wondering if a pro like yourself could instil some useful information in a poker newb (playing steadily and studying hard for about a year), so that I might have less vairence at the tables and possibly begin to win consitanly and maybe look to advancing in levels (someday)

Thanks Dave,

P.

  • The best advice you're going to get is keep playing, practice is the important factor.
Also, depending if you're playing limit or NL that could be the difference.
.5/1 limit people will chase down anything till the river.
  • Understand that you don't win all the time. In my case, I win about 65% of the time. That is my "daily win rate." It means that I will finish down on the day 35% of the time.

Longest losing streak? I just checked... I thought it would be longer, but in the past year my worst skid was three days (don't ask for how much though... gulp).

Read the article I just posted under "Amatuer Poker Player" at www.CanadianPoker.com. I think it addresses your question. In a nutshell: Keep track.
  • Come on............how much?

Post some hands of situations where:

    1) You weren't sure you played it right
    2) You think you played it right and won
    3) You think you played it right and lost.

In between the petty bickering that can happen around here, we actually do want to help..

Clearly the best decision is to move up in limits where the players are better so that they don't chase you with hopeless hands and suck out on the river.

What BBC says is all true. The bickering is part of the charm, but I think you'll find a good source of info here. Just remember as much detail as possible.

Don't base anything on a single 3-hour session... you can play everyhand you get perfectly and still lose money... its called variance... get used to it!!

Like BBC_Z said... post some hands... ecspecially the ones where you put alot of money in the pot. In a $.5/$1 game you're gonna see alot of chasers, so you'll want to be playing a tight aggressive game. Even still, you can be down after you get drawn out on so many times... eventually you'll be ahead if you're making the right plays... post some hands!!

Don't move up in limits until you're comfortable enough with your play, and you have the bankroll... if you lose money at the lower limits only because you got sucked out on, be thankful... as you move up in limits, there are many more ways to lose money, many more ways to get outplayed. And I've seen people chase at the high limits too!!! :D

  • I saw the humour in your post... but perhaps the OP didn't... I just wanted to make sure he didn't think this was "advice". Throw in a smiley or :D:D
  • I think we need a sarcasm detector... Where's Prof. Frink when you need him?
