Surround Sound Problem

Recently I got a new Blueray player so I decided to reconnect the surround system that I haven't used for a couple years since moving into the new place. For some reason I can't get all six speakers to work. I seem to be only getting sound out of the front right and front left speakers (none out of center channel, subwoofer or rear right or left speakers).

I have a Yamaha RX-V1400 receiver which comes with an optimizer microphone which adjusts for the speaker distance for optimal sound. When I run the optimizer setup, its only recognizing the FR and FL speakers.

Any suggestions on things to check for proper setup or testing I can try to identify what is causing the other speakers to not be recognized by the receiver? All speakers are connected to 'A' channel. I have tried getting getting sound out of all speakers with the digital cable and tape deck but still only getting sound out of the two speakers. Cheers.

  • Any speaker wires crossed?

i.e. red on amp to black on speaker
  • Sound settings set at 2 channel instead of 5.1?
  • My amp/receiver often shuts off the sub-woofer if all the other 5 speakers are set to large. I have to go into the speaker setup and change the surrounds to small from large and then turn the subwoofer on. On my system, that shows up on the TV. Maybe you have a setting somewhere that says what speakers to turn on, regardless of the wiring?

that was something I thought could be the issue. Would 2 channel default to LF and RF? When I watch a DVD, the receiver is working properly in the sense I am not getting only vocals (which would normally come out the centre channel) but only background sound.

Haven't been able to figure out how to switch from 2 to 5.1? Any ideas?

This receiver has this option. I will have a look and try to give some more specifics to try and isolate the problem.

There's an FAQ and downloadable manuals for it on this page. It says that it's discontiued, so getting actual tech support may be difficult.

I found with my surround sound that the downloadable instructions were actually better than the paper ones as there were several errors on the paper version.
  • Since your optimizer is only recognizing two speakers, perhaps your AVR setup has the other speakers set to 'None' or 'Off'? Until you get the optimizer working for all speakers, there is no use doing other troubleshooting.
  • So, I had a problem with my surround sound about two days after Jah posted this. Started looking at everything (a week later; I'm lazy, big whoop, wanna fight about it?) and couldn't figure it out. Finally went to my man cave printed off the 60+ pages of instructions.

Initially, as it was the two front speakers, I figured my cats were being little bastards and pulled the wires out. Nope, but I replace the wires anyways in case the did something I couldn't see.

Read through the manual and just can't figure it out. Start to think about getting a little pissed off at this stupid piece of crap machine. Then I take a breath and decide to look at the front of the machine instead of the back. Tiny little button on the front that says INPUT or something like that. I push it. All speakers turn off. Push it again, they all work.

    Fuck.

On the plus side, all the extra looking I did allowed me to figure out that I had about 6 extra cables plugged in that weren't actually doing anything.

I have an option for A and B speakers. Tried this before for both options, still didn't help.
