Montreal poker classic

Hello everyone, new here...

Was wondering about the party poker Montreal classic.

Is anyone attending? What are your views on this event?

I played the open sponsored by FTP last year, the actual trny is a bit of a crapshoot, need to make top 20-30 to make it worth your whole.

Aside from that, it's about my only excuse to get out to Montreal, in which case I can then check out the other options available locally. Really enjoy the casino, went to PG last year for the first time, absolutely loved it, theme, atmosphere, action, professionalism, etc etc.

Just open to thoughts and ideas around this, anything else to look out for during that time, will be present for about 4 days surrounding the classic

Thanks

  • Coles Notes: Like other charity events, it is -EV to buy in. IF you care about EV, then you can try to win a package and consider not spending on rebuys, add-on and hotel.

See Thoughts on this Article Regarding Party doing Montreal Classic.
These annual events have been highly -EV since FTP's promised prize pool was limited to $200K but 1,500 victims made it a sell-out. So players' buy-ins totalled $412,500, but the prizes were less than half (later turned out to be zero thanks to Lederer+Ferguson+Ivey+Lindgren+Benyamine et al).

Average EV was only $133, but the buy-in was $275 + unlimited $125 rebuys + $125 add-on + up to four days of hotel and living expenses + travel costs to Montreal, etc. so most players spent more than four times the promised value of the tournament. It was like buying into a Seneca Casino $1K event for over $4,000, and even if you won, 100% would be taxed away so ALL the players ended up with nothing! I believe all the rebuys and add-ons went to a charity (which most people have never heard of), but some players get carried away and rebuy much more than they ever intended.

It will be -EV to buy into this year's event unless there are less than 727 players (even more -EV if you rebuy or add-on). Since a lot of players don't really care that much about losing money and EV, there will probably be many more players than the breakeven EV point. If you are among the minority of players that care about EV, then the best way to participate in this fun event is to win one of the packages being offered by PartyPoker, Red Hot Poker Tour, Canada Poker or The Poker Show. You get U$225 in spending money, which can cover part of your travel and rebuy expenses.
  • Thank you for your insight, I understand these types of events are -EV, I'm looking at this as a vacation expense. The only reason im coming out to Montreal in the first place is because of this trny, I expect to likely lose. and move on afterwards and check out other action going on in the city. I wouldn't be able to convince a trip to montreal solely on PG and the casino so this makes it a bit easier.

Last year was fun overall, never experienced anything like it before, biggest trny I've ever played, made day 2 (brag?....probably not, although was quite excited about that), first time seeing any poker pros live and just the general atmosphere. Was a fun time.

Edit: based on your avatar blondefish , I assume that is from the PP classic website, you are going to be attending?
  • I won a $500 package from PartyPoker on my first try. I'm waiting if any friend will win one of the 60+ packages available. For some strange reason, Party won't put the money in your account until just before the tournament starts, so they somehow expect even freeroll/microstakes winners to front hundreds of dollars in buy-in, rebuys, add-on and expenses.

Maybe I'll ask Kara Scott to BAP me. ;)
  • Nice! What sat did you enter into? What kinda feild was there.

I know FTP did the same thing about paying out at the last minute , met up with someone there on 2+2 that won a sat on FTP.

I Seldomly play online but when I do I prefer party. Don't know too much about what they have running.
  • See the PartyPoker link in my 1st post on this thread on some of their qualifiers available. Believe it or not, very few Canadians are taking advantage of these qualifiers so the final satellite for the $500 package sometimes have an overlay!

Did FTP take attendance at the event? If an FTP online winner could not make it to Montreal, did he/she get to keep the money or did FTP take it back?
  • I'm pretty sure the funds were just deposited, I belive you could do anything with the money at that point

There were im sure many ppl that got a sat through FTP, I only know of the one because we met up from chatting about it on 2+2.

As for FTP in general, there was a lot! Lots of big name pros, smaller name pros, goodie bags for everyone who entered. (dvd's, land yards, hats, misc stuff like that) banners everywhere.

It was a good event, lot of fun
  • im confused can somebody tell me if im understanding correctly, i qualified to play on 10th for string of 5 to go to montreal 225 entry n 275 travel... if i make top 5 and qualify for montreal the travel portion of winnings is deposited into my partypoker account and not given at the tourney ?
iam not well off and to fund the trip=accomadations=re buys would cost me out of pocket so i need to weigh the pros n cons of attending if i win and second question is if you dont show up will the 275 travel portion still go into your acct at partypoker ?
any help will be appreciated ty , dano
  • You have the numbers backwards but it doesn't really matter. It's $275 for the buy in,

Assuming you cannot withdrawal from your pp account into your personal account to use that money for the trip in time then you will have to front all of your other expenses but the original but in will be covered

This question would probably be best if directed towards pp customer service. Try emailing them, they'll have better answers for you
  • thank you ubetifold
  • Considering that it's a charity then I don't see why I shouldn't contribute.
