The second definition of "murdalize" in urban dictionary contains an error. The word was NOT first used in the movie 3 Ninjas. It was used routinely by the Three Stooges back before there was colour television.

And, yes, I think a casino in Toronto would "utterly destroy" both Niagara Falls casinos and Rama, just as the second definition has it. Mind you, the two Niagara Falls casinos are well on their way to failing thanks to their idiot general manager, the Seneca casino and Ontario's declining economy.

I don't think it matters how stupid the GM is...not much competition means success. Degens gonna degen

I dunno if I agree with the utter destruction of the already-established casinos - if anything, a casino in Toronto would perhaps give the Niagara and Orillia properties the incentive they need to step up their game in terms of service, incentives, etc.

If competition destroyed existing casinos, Las Vegas and AC would not be the gambling Mecca`s they are now. Competition is good; even necessary to keep existing businesses from complacency.

I would love for a full service casino to go up in the GTA somewhere (I agree Woodbine would be a decent choice seeing as the infrastructure is already in place: the location, the parking, staff, security, etc.) But wherever it goes, I hope that poker would be in the cards. The AGCO seems to have a real aversion to HE poker (L, NL, whatever).

Some Torontonians have expressed concerns about an increase in crime rates in neighbourhoods close to a new casino: with the exception of condos, there`s no real neighbourhood, per se, by Ontario Place or Exhibition Place, in fact, Exhibition place has a police detachment on site, if anyone`s really worried, and I am not aware of any statistics which suggest an increase in crime rates in areas near the Ex while the Exhibition Casino is up and running each year.

Anyway, I am hopeful but not expectant of a favourable decision any time soon.
  • Rama is screwed if this happens, they are already hurting. But I do agree that it will force them to step up their game in terms of incentives.

A lot of people come from Toronto to Rama maybe more on buses is which Rama has always counted on.

Niagara falls casino's I don't think will notice much of a difference as they have a tonne of people from the states coming over.

Remember when they announced fallsview and the uproar over that, everybody was saying no way 2 casino's so close will not last, not only these too but you have Seneca and Fort Erie close by as well.
  • This just in: Tim Hudak says he's opposed to a new casino in Toronto. Since McGuinty has a minority government, he has to get either the Conservatives or the NDP to vote with him in order to get any law passed. A lot will now depend on whether he can cut a deal with the NDP. I'm not real hopeful.
  • Whatever party is for allowing a casino in toronto I will vote for.

It's just politics, its not like my vote matters for anything else.

Wouldn't the promotion of poker make an excellent political platform?

Why not? He's more likely to find a friend among the NDP, than with Hudak's gang anyway. It's not like the NDP will ever get the big chair again. All Premier Dad has to do is waste a few billion of our tax dollars on some cockamamie NDP idea, and the casino is a done deal.

I work right beside the police station near The Ex. The crime rate is not bad. The only thing that would be an eye sore for the casino is the homeless, and the crazies from Parkdale.
  • The Ex casino is a bad comparison, as it is a temporary installation. A more permanent structure would attract more permanent "issues".

    We're not all crazy :D
  • City of Toronto: Toronto Casino Consultation

Starting in January we can all give our feedback for the casino in toronto
  • Thanks. I look forward to fillling out the online feedback form or downloading the workbook when they become available. I hope Woodbine will have a casino so there will be choices between driving to Fallsview or downtown Toronto.

  • i guess i,m the dissenting voice here....the govt decided to eliminate the slots at racetrack program, a successful partnership i might add, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into the treasury ,,,an ill thought out , meanspirited decision, and in its place, casinos,,,casinos that from all reports are struggling...but yet here we are, the OLG, running around the province pitching communities on getting a casino, which will put more money into american casino interests than govt coffers...but i guess thats to be expected from a horrid , little piece of crap like paul godfrey..:(
  • I tend to agree....its a poor excuse to tax ontarians again because of financial mis management. There are more than enough options and if they wanted to they could easily re-brand old niagara casino with harrahs and re-do it. Don't get me wrong I enjoy playing poker but why not work on improving what we have in terms of casinos instead of building a new one.
  • Now that Premier Wynne and Toronto council killed off both a casino and Woodbine expansion :(, the next best hope for a casino near Toronto is Vaughan. The two recommended sites are near Highway 400 and 407, just north of the Steeles Avenue border. So in ~2016, I'll drop off the kid at Canada's Wonderland then I'm off to the Wynn Vaughan Casino. :)
  • I've heard the final Vaughan vote won't even be until next year ...and that's pre-planning.
  • Woodbine is back in the race
Toronto city council last year voted against expanding gambling (or opening a casino) at Woodbine. But if the provincial government is intent on opening another casino in the GTA area — which it has indicated is the intent — it has to be at Woodbine. If it goes elsewhere, the racing facility’s chances of survival appear dim.

So says Woodbine Entertainment Group CEO Nick Eaves.

In a lengthy interview this week with the Toronto Sun, Eaves said if a casino opens in a neighbouring community, it would “be a threat” to the survival of the racetrack, that provides employment for 7,500 people.

There are 3,000 slots at the track, but Eaves said it wouldn’t be able to compete if a gambling site in Mississauga, Vaughn or Brampton were to open.

“We don’t offer table games and ... frankly, that’s what people are looking for.”
  • NEVER going to happen in Brampton, and Mississauga has said the same thing in the past. Might change now that Hazel is retiring, but I doubt it.

Vaughan is "iffy", but Markham is far more likely, if anywhere. Woodbine is the most likely spot for any expansion in the GTA.
  • Pickering (in Durham region) may also be in the race...but it is at the VERY early stages at this point (more of a proposal than anything else).
