Women players
Hi there,
I'm a writer researching women in poker. Looking for your feedback:
are you noticing more women at the poker tables?
if yes, is this a good thing?
do women play differently than men?
what do women players think about table discrimination? Does it exist? Too much of it?
Any thoughts on the gender topic would be appreciated.
thanks!

Here's a link to a recent thread that touched on this subject, although it probably only scratches the surface of what you might be looking for.

As far as women being discriminated at the table, I don't believe that is a huge issue. I think the more relevant issue would be women not wanting to play due to the generally accepted myth that most men can be as piggish as they want at a poker table. I'm hoping this "generally accepted myth" becomes at tale that once was...

I think more women should come out, it'll make some of these guy's who think that women shouldn't be there realize that it's anybody's game. I'd put my wife up against anybody, she's been playing cards since she could count to 52 (thanks to her dad), and she know's as well as I do, it's not yoour skill, it's the cards and your patience to play them or wait them out.
I find that at most of the games I play, I am either the only woman, or there are one or two more - but never more than that. As to whether women playing is a good thing or not, I obviously don't see a problem with it.
I play the same way any man will play, with a few exceptions. As evil as it may sound, I have been known to use my feminine sex appeal to my adavantage once in awhile. More importantly, I've noticed that the standard joking around and making fun of type of comments coming from a guy are taken just for what they are, a lot of talk - but - My little jabs and remarks can send a man on tilt before I even finish speaking. This isn't true with all, or probably ewven most men, nevertheless it's a weakness I have noticed and used to my advantage.
Descrimination? Of course. People will tell you they don't care if women play, or that they even really enjoy it, and I'm sure some of them do. I have run into guys who are clearly not happy with playing with me and treat me as such. It doesn't really bother me, my course of action is always to take their money at the end of the night having taught them a good lesson.
Still, there are times at the poker table when I feel that there is more "at stake" for certain players if they are against me in a hand. I chalk it to the fact that most of them have never played against a girl before and are just curious, or shy (when it comes to guys, I'm a half-full kind of gal), but it can be unnerving to have a psycho-stare on you just because you used position to make a guy fold his draw on the flop. You can't be too sensitive about it, though, because then you make yourself very easily manipulated.
More people playing poker is a good thing.
When you sit at a table you often see guys who are just there to fool around and have fun.(some)
Thing is, when you see a women at a poker table, you know that she must be interested in the game. Eather shes trying to learn it or she's there to make money. Why else would she put up with a bunch of moron. (not all men are moron).
And sometime you see women who are just trying to share a hobby with boyfriend. But even in that case she's gonna start by learning and then if she like's it she's gonna end up with her fair share of pot over the next couple of month. The only difference is when she's starting you can make a couple of buck by putting her boyfriend on tilt. All you have to do is win a couple of pot from her and your gonna see the flame in is eyes. Hes coming for you with nothing and you wait for a hand.
I dont think women play differently than man, men play differently when women are around.
Then I see female dealers from rama playing at Heron...besides the dealers I dont see that many extra women.
At tourneys i've been to - i'm pretty much one of 2 women.
Its all good. Most guys get a little disconcerted spending too much time overthinking - trying to figure out why i'm there. Whether i'm good or fish.
Fun times.
That's interesting, I was at Rama on Thursday night. When 2 more women joined the table the dealer noted that Heron dealers seem to go to Rama on Thursdays. It's almost like a cross promotion.
So it appears women start playing poker due to a boyfriend / husband or possibly dealing as a stepping stone.
