GG Vasiliy Alekseyev

Retired Soviet Superheavyweight champion lifter died at age 69 in a Munich clinic, while being treated for heart troubles. For any of you that do not remember, Alekseyev set over 80 world records in weightlifting, including an incredible 645 kg combined lift at a meet in the 70's. He was undefeated as a competitor throughout the decade, iirc. For a niche sport athlete, Alekseyev was a very well known sportsman. Unlike some of the more "in your face" lifters one sees today, Alekseyev was the Barry Sanders of lifting. He just took the platform, lifted the bar, and walked away. Every once in a while you would get a slight bow, or a raised arm. Pure class all the way.

  • I watched him set the world record at the Montreal olympics in '76 - He and Nadia were the stars of the USSR team that year.
  • Except that Nadia did not compete for the Soviets, but for Romania . . . maybe you are thinking of Olga Korbut in Munich?

FTR, Nadia turned 50 earlier this month.

You mean those guys that look much smaller and human than the lifters of years gone by....the ones that many insomniacs see for about 3 minutes every 4 years?

It was the Montreal Olympics that Nadia competed at for Romania, had multiple perfect 10 scores and won 3 gold medals. Vasiliy won one gold in Montreal as well as one in the 72 Munich (massacre) games. Remember both well..
At Munich Mark Spitz won 7 gold and Soviet Olga Korbet won 3. Both Olga and Nadia became media darlings for sure, Vasiliy not so much.

Huh, I was three at the time. Kind of puts Comp's age in perspective for me though. Please to not ban me for saying this.
