GG Smokin' Joe Frazier

Just heard on Monday Night Football that Joe Frazier has died from cancer. Nothing on the news about his death yet, but found this article.
The 67-year-old boxer sleeps for most the day but is coherent when awake, his personal and business manager said. Leslie Wolff, who has been the fighter's manager for seven years, said Frazier has been flooded with get-well messages from former boxers and fans.

  • One half of the greatest trilogy of fights in boxing history. Though the second one was a bit of a snorer, the "Fight of the Century" and the "Thrilla in Manila" were unparallelled in terms of the ferocity and skill on display. Frazier beats Ali at MSG, then loses a close decision at the Garden in the rematch. It all comes down to a steaming hot ring in Manila, the Phillipines. Temperatures were very high (100'F) and climbing for a morning fight (to accomadate international TV viewers). Ali receives the sternest test of his career, saying to Frazier in one clinch, "They told me you were washed up, Joe." Frazier's response was classic, "They LIED". Ali later stated that it was the closest he had ever come to dying, and that Frazier was the toughest man he had ever faced in the ring. The fight ended in a TKO for Ali when Eddie Futch, Frazier's corner, stopped the fight between the 14th and 15th rounds. Frazier was off his stool at the bell, but Futch knew he could not see out of one eye, and would not allow the fight to continue. If you watch the fight on Youtube, you will see how pissed Frazier is . . . rumours have always swirled that neither man was going to be able to continue, but that Frazier's corner made the decision first. Ali, post fight, could barely get off his stool for the official decision, and both fighters were virtually carried from the ring by assistants.

RIP, Joe, and when Ali eventually comes to join you, be gentle when you "show him the ropes."
