Player Ranking System

i've been trying to come up with a way to rank the players in our local game. so far, i've been using the simple method of reverse-winner points (in an 8 player game, 1st gets 8, and 8th gets 1). u also get .5 point for busting someone out. what this doesn't account for tho, is the number of times people buy in. would it be a good idea to, say, subtract a point each time someone rebuys during a game?

thanks for any help

  • If it is not a winner take all game every time you play, you could assign points based on buy-ins or the amount of chips on the table. 1 point is up for grabs for every buy-in / re-stake. At the start of the game everyone has 0 points. At cash-out your points equal your stack minus the standard buy-in amount, minus 1 point for every time you had to re-stake. This may reward someone's "big night" in a way relative to other players.

As an aside, would your group every use rankings to determin seating? How would a seating plan work, based on rankings?

  • what about using how much cash has been accumulated by each player as the ranking system....

ie) if someone wins $200 then their ranking is 200 ..if they win $50 next time their ranking is 250 and so on...i hope it makes sense..ive seen casinos use this to rank the tounrey players, its not that bad of a way
  • well, what i don't like about a cash-based ranking, is the inconsistent size of pots...there isn't always the same # of players, and some may have bought in more than once. for instance, we have a guy who has only played in 1 of this years 3 games. he's accumulated more cash that 1 night than any of us, because there were more players and more re-buys than any other night.

what we've started trying is the reverse-placement points, minus 1 point for each re-buy, plus half a point for each player you bust out. so if a player came in 3rd in a 7 player game, and busted out 1 other player, he would have 5.5 points. if he had 1 re-buy tho, he would have 4.5 points. how does that sound?

(and the top 3 ranked players, get the good chairs at each game)
  • Take a look at my site, Kitchener Poker Tour. We use a pretty cool ranking system that seems fair and weights each tourney appropriately based on the buyin size and the # of players. The formula is at the bottom of the page, if you want to try it out.
