Too cold on the lawn. We'll need to occupy her basement.
  • Before getting into my adventures at the Harvest Poker Classic I would again like to thank those who were behind me, both in and out of the BAP. This was the first time I have played a whole live series. The experience was fantastic and I am very grateful for all the support. Whether or not I do another BAP next time I do not know, I will however be playing the Spring series regardless.

Book your holidays now and start planning your Prairie Poker Road trips for the spring and come join the fun!!!

For the tournament week here in Regina, the Poker room gets moved into the Casino's Show Lounge. Tournaments and cash are held in the same room and they even set up 2 $25 min/ $500 max black jack tables this year.

Cash games were available from 12 noon until 6am for each day of the tournament, and depending on the time of day there was 20 or more different available to be used. More as the tourney dwindled down
ofcourse. The games that were offered this week in the show lounge were:

    1/2 NL
    1/3 NL
    2/5 NL
    5/10 NL
    10/20 with kill
    10/20 DC
    15/30 with kill
    15/30 Omaha high/low.

There were also single table and extreme sattelites available for each event of the tournament series. The poker room staff were well organized and kept the list moving along. If one was to miss 2 sets of
blinds during peak times chips were removed and seats made available. 1 hour dinner markers were available with a max of 2 at one time per table.

I went into the day well rested and feeling comfortable. Knowing many of the people there I was kind of surprised to be seated at a table of all out of towners. Not much to tell, just some average back and forth with the half hour blinds. Got into a few avg pots and felt good comming back from the first break. With blinds at 100/200 and still around starting stack of 6k, I come back from break having been dealt QQ. Not so long story short, standard raise reraise pot and was up vs A5o and an A spikes. Cest la vie.

I got an extra dinner voucher from the poker room manager and took my mum up for dinner. Got myself onto a 1/2 table and was able to make a cpl hundred dollars over the evening. I did spend quite a bit of
time watching the play at various tournament tables as the night went on and there was some really great poker to watch at times. Not knowing how tired I would feel after playing all day I thought an early night was in order, got some wings and coffee on the way home and chilled for the evening. Kinda sucked not having any computer access, but this was probably for the best since I know I would have stayed up way too late talking to you yahoos!!

Start the day with the customary Timmies, and take my seat. I was familiar with atleast a few of the players at the table this time. 8k starting stack and 30 min levels does not always create a slow start. Within the first 30 mins 2 players had bust at our table and we played the first 2 hours always at minimum 1 short. At one point we were 3 short after a 3 way all in pre AA vs QQ vs AKs. QQ had the other 2 outchipped and he spiked a Q on the flop for the double KO.

Atleast 7 players went bust in the first 2 hours at our table which I thought was amazing. I had a good image and was getting respect, especially after showing down the best several times. I ended at the first break with about 14k chips in front of me.

Not too much of noteworthy goings on over the next few hours, other than Buddy wearing 2 rings won at Regina Events (from S'toon) who kept raising my blinds and reraising my raises. I have no doubt he is a
good player and have played him before but I was not about to let him get too comfortable trying to push me around.

Again he raises my big blind at which point I make a comment to him. I look down to 97s and after a call behind I call as well with no action to come after me. The flop came out rainbow, all low and I had
complete air. It gets checked around. Turn comes still low no flush draw but straight draws could come with the river. I am fairly certain he has air as well and is holding over cards or a decent ace. Hoping he will bet the turn after it is checked around again which has been his MO it is checked to me, so I again look at him and check. He thinks only a second before betting out with the other villain folding which is what I wanted to see. I am really comfortable here so I reraise him to just under 3x his bet. He mutters under his breath and after thinking for a minute mucks an ace face up saying he will stop raising my big blind at which point I said, yes you will, and I tabled my 9 high. My girlfriend Kristy who was playing at the same table just smiled at me as Buddy got up and went for a smoke :)

After 6 hours with just a 20kish stack I became card dead. I was able to get a few sets of blinds here and there but there was really nothing happening as far as cards go. There was much banter back and forth as a gentleman from Ontario who I nicknamed Rico Suave' took it upon himself to begin lecturing the ladies on the table about our play. I think it bothered him that we both started ganging up on him after he started wagging his tongue, especially considering he had to re-enter the event because he was one of the first out at our table earlier in the day!! Before you knew it he had lost 2/3 of his stack to Kristy when he had turned a low 2 pair while she had already flopped top two and he thought he was trapping her. Way to go super pro!! Where do I sign up for your elite lessons??

After just over 8 hours I was sitting at about 13k when I look down to AA in the big blind. Utg raises, with one caller behind so I reraise all in. Utg snap calls and V2 folds. We both table our AA (ffs) and the
board runs out for a chop.

Unfortunately my run was comming to an end as the blinds grew and my stack was not. Knowing I needed chips to even try to make a run for the money, with just about 10 bb I got it in with 77 trying to make something happen, even a blind steal, and ran into 1010 to finish 40th. GG me.

I was quite pleased with my showing on the day and this was my deepest run in a live tournament of this size. I spent the remainder of the evening watching the tournament go on in between playing some cash and mingling. I was so proud to see Kristy make the FT. Our other girl friend Pam also made the money being felted shortly after the bubble burst. Way to go ladies!

That's it for Part 1 of The Adventures with Shar trip Report. Part 2 will be posted as soon as I have it finished up, hopefully tomorrow before I go back to work for the first day of atleast a week straight....ugh.

PS: Yes Comp, I will supply any coffee and baked goods in return for the Occupation of Regina by my favourite Poker players evah ;)
  • Nice read . . . Kristy? Surely not "our" Kristy?
  • Hey Shar,

    Welcome back!

BTW, in my limited experience, there's always at least one Rico Suave type ready to "school" us little women on how to play poker. Nothing more satisfying than felting those guys.

So far, it sounds like you got a good amount of event experience...can't wait for Part 2.

    oh the anticipination.

Would love to occupy your lawn since the occupy toronto peeps are practically in my back yard.

Great trip reports so far (but for the "run good" not matching your "play good"). Hopefully the Shar-report part deux has a plot twist! Either way it sounds like you had a an awesome experience.
  • There was much banter back and forth as a gentleman from Ontario who I nicknamed Rico Suave'/QUOTE]

I found this funny as I very often nickname people at the table when playing.
BTW, in my limited experience, there's always at least one Rico Suave type ready to "school" us little women on how to play poker/QUOTE]

Overall I enjoy these types at my table. While they are often offensive they are usually easily separated from their chips.
  • Great trip report!!!
  • Great trip report!!!

The only thing to make it better would be seeing the phrase "I binked" :)
  • Yeah, I noticed a curious lack of accounting . . . there was a teasingly anonymous FT winner from Regina, but I know it was not our gal. Sometimes, the anticipation can be more fun than the reality . . . on to part deux.
  • Even a Coles Notes version of Part 2 would be good...
  • A little patience Wolfie . . . big changes for Shar lately in her non-Forum life. She's alluded to it a bit here, but it really is not for me to spill the beans.
  • All info will be forthcomming tomorrow after I wake up, as long as I don't have to go in to work. Sorry for all the delays guys, but for now, I gotta head to work.

Thank you for being so patient, and for being so interested in part 2!

    LOL!!!

    Sheeesh......
  • Ok, so I have been pretty busy since I took my time off for the tournament, and it seems I picked a really good time to do so. I know I have neglected you guys with the delay of part 2, but it could not be helped.

My very glamourous job as a waitress has led me into the lifestyle change I am currently going through. I was being called in as of the Monday morning after the tournaments to help cover shifts. After comming back to work to find $$ had been going missing, and we had a Manager that was dealing with personal problems in several different self medicating ways, a "sniff" situation arose while we had an event in the bar that needless to say required immediate attention. The result is that I am now the Night Bar Manager and have been working pretty much straight through since. Schedules are being shuffled and I am hoping for some regularity soon.

Anyone who has ever been in the service industry understands just how time consuming this position can be. I am not complaining; I am damn good at my job, but without a chance to adjust I have fallen behind in a few things that, at the moment would be extra curricular.

My plan was to sit down and catch up on a few things earlier today (Wednesday) but I had to catch up on sleep, then go in again tonight to help for a while. First of the month is liquor inventory in the morning so while I have the day off tomorrow, I must go do some counting first. I am then going to clean my house, do some laundry and make an awesome dinner for my son, who it feels like I haven't seen in a month. I then will be participating in the Thursday forum game while I finish and post part 2 of my adventures in Regina, which I have been dying to share! Not going to leave the house for anything tomorrow night until this is done ;)

  • Adventures with Shar at the Harvest Poker Classic: Part 2

    November 11, 2011

I started the day off having coffee and visiting with my brother and his girlfriend. I got ready and watched some of the Rememberance Day ceremonies before heading out. I make the customary stop at Timmies
for me and 3 of my friends, and while delivering coffee on the way to my seat had to turn down several offers to buy my whole tray :P

I take my seat and get settled for what I hope will be a long day. Coffee in hand I start chatting about the previous day with a few of the guys I know at the table. Not much going on and mostly just smallish pots
to start off with. It certainly wasn't the speedy start of the day before. There were a couple guys at my table that were extremely chatty, and it seemed like they were just itching to get under someones skin.

One of the first pots I am in happens to be my big blind (25/50). Utg limps as does a few others and the sb. Looking down at a spectacular J7o I elect to see a flop, and hell if it doesnt flop with 77Q no flush
draw. Check check and utg bets out with +1 +2 (resident chatty cathys) both calling, then folding around to me.

There is about 800 in the pot after I just call. Turn comes an A still no flush. I check and the young gun to my left again bets out @ 325 with V1 calling and V2 folding. I reraise to 875 and utg calls with V2 folding. River comes a 3. I pause for a moment and bet out 1500. The young man then starts to talk to me asking if I really want action. He looks at his cards, then asks me again if I want action and I just kind of shoot him a sideways glance without saying a word.

Right away the other two that were previously in the hand start chirping to each other. The one who looked like he was trying to be Andy Gibb makes a comment about the glare I gave the kid..."If looks could kill, he would be dead at the table" apparantly. After a moment, the young guy decided to just call and he mucks after I table my J7. Mr. BeeGee then starts in on the hand and my cards, and I just let him run his mouth, hoping it would tire him out, and I was quite happy with the pot for a bb special.

For the next hour or so it was just standard play and I was pleased to keep adding a bit to my stack. With just a few hands before the first break a couple of the loosey gooseys were getting low already and they tried to make some moves. Mr. BeeGee gets into a hand with a short stack. I don't remember the particulars, but there was betting on each round. I remember there was an AQQ on the board, unsure on the other two cards.

On the river the short stack puts in the last of his chips, roughly 2k. Now, keep in mind that BeeGee had a very healthy stack and this was in no way a tournament life decision for him. I would think that for most this is a no brainer and you would likely call maybe fold almost instantly...but nooooOOOOoooo; he let the seconds tick into minutes. I couldn't help but think "Are you F***ing serious"???

After almost 5 mins had gone by, I couldn't take it anymore so I called a clock...and he lost his freaking mind! Before the floor gets to the table to start the clock he gets quite vocal, telling me to get up and leave the table, how rude I am, that I have no poker ettiquette and I should do myself a favour and do something other than play cards, perhaps make myself busy getting coffee. A few words were exchanged before a silence hit the table. After his minute of silence is almost up he finally folds and makes the remark that he had a weak ace and couldn't figure out if he should call, still bitching that I had called a clock.

This guy could not let it go and kept trying to get under my skin, now making comments about how he will enjoy taking all my chips and I didn't deserve to be there. The young guy to my left jumps in and tells Mr. BeeGee to settle down because had I not called a clock he would have, and how rediculous he was for wasting everyones time.

We come back from the first break and the first hour back was pretty standard play, the most memorable hand up till that point being when I almost felted a guy with my JJ vs 1010. After almost 3 hours I had a stack of about 25k and I was feeling good about the day so far!

I have QQ dealt to me and I am in mp. There is a raise before me so I reraise and there are oddly a couple calls behind. Guy on the button thinks for a bit then ships all in for about 15k. It gets folded to me. I thought about it for a few moments before calling, the other villains folding.

The button tables his AKo quite proudly but I saw his face fall a bit when I rolled over my QQ. The dealer wastes no time and out comes the flop, and what a beautiful flop it was too!!

    2 9 2 <
    Looking good so far!

Burn and turn is revealed to be another 2! Woot I just have one more card to dodge and I would be damn near, if not the chip leader. Button boy is grabbing his jacket and getting up from the table now when the river comes....

    revealing the case freaking 2!!!!!

There was ofcourse many gasps and comments at the table as I watched my chips being pushed over to the Villian, who was quick to appologize to me. All I could honestly think at that point was that this is the hand I would dedicate to all those who bitch about rigged poker!! :) I set out to work on my stack again trying to leave that hand behind me...atleast for the duration of the tournament.

We are nearing the dinner break now and I had managed to get my stack up to about 15k. I look down in my bb to 99. A new kid at the table has raised his first few hands in a row and does so again. With a caller behind I am more than happy to call and check out a flop. It comes out all undercards, 4 5 7 I believe it was. Hoping for the opportunity to come over top I check. Villian bets out and gets a call, at which point I ship.

The young kid counts his stack, and it is about half of it for him to call me. He hums n haws for a bit and after figuring he was getting good enough odds to call at about 1.5 - 1, he puts his chips in and Villian2 folds. I flip over my 99 and he says out loud, well that isnt Ace high is it and rolls over his 34o. Turn is no help to him but that lovely river luck was in his seat on this day as a 4 fell to finish me off. GG and good luck to the rest of you gentlemen!

I got my name on the cash list before going to have dinner but I was having a good time railing some friends and catching up with other players. After a couple tours of the tournament tables, a friend and I decide to go to the bar for a few wobbly pops. We end up visiting for quite some time. Several beer and shots later, I call it a night and make my way home to get some sleep for the final day of the series.
  • gut wrenching... no other way to describe it.. gg Shar.
  • Saskatchewan poker is soooo rigged . . . dirtydirtydirty, and not in that good way.
  • Okay, I give up....fell asleep after getting the boy on his way to school this morning and I work at 6....obv I haven't finished the last day yet but here are a couple pics I found in the Canada Poker Galleries, one from early on and one after the AK/QQ hand on day 3.
