An Amusing Tournament 30 Minutes

This was the Pokerstars 10+1 non rebuy at 7:45 tonight. Late in the tournament I was fairly low stacked (about 9k ) with blinds of 1k/2k.

For the next 30 minutes I played a total of 4 hands. Can you see the pattern? (Note, will be removing the early hand spam to keep the post below 10,000 characters)

I almost felt bad when I knocked him out as he was one of the best sports I have seen in these tournaments and he took the fact that I just kept smashing him with all ins with class. I don't think I have ever had one person double me up 4 times within 30 minutes in a tournament like that before, especially with those being the only 4 hands I played.

Sadly once Ron left me I was moved to another table, the magic faded and my tournament came to a sad close when the following two hands happened shortly after each other. Certainly can't fault my opponent here, but ouch this hurt.

*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Monteroy [Ks Ac]

Monteroy: raises 8000 to 12000
JKo917: folds

*** RIVER *** [6d 8h Td 4d] [9d]
Monteroy said, "sigh"
*** SHOW DOWN ***
Monteroy: shows [Ks Ac] (high card Ace)
DMLUIGI: shows [Kc Ad] (a flush, Ace high)
DMLUIGI said, "oh sh.itt"
DMLUIGI collected 75096 from pot
deznuts said, "ouchy"

then the final blow about 5 hands later. This hand still baffles me as I certainly expected someone to call (with hopefully overcards). I certainly never expected to be dominating.

I ended up 29th out of about 1200 which I guess was ok (though Ron did fill me with final table dreams). I therefore dedicate this tournament to him (since basically all of my chips were his ;) ). He was actually a fairly solid player (though a bit overagressive pre flop at times) and he was a class act which is sadly not the norm in these cases so if anyone runs accross him at a table expect a friendly competitive match and kudos to him for that.

Edit: Just checked and I see that JKo917 ended up winning the tournament. I will admit that surprised me, but maybe his play is a valid one to go for the tournament win (given his soso stack) if he actually assumes his 2 cards will be live and that noone else will call. 14.6 k to win 24k more. Guess it works if I have a hand like K 10 but not so good against AK or any pair besides 2s. It is an interesting type of play (ie: it is either extremely advanced or extremely stupid) and it certainly worked for him tonight.

On a seperate note, I also did my standard 100-200th place finish in the Stars rebuy (my 10th finish in that range this month out of 13 (2 money finishes and 1 worse finish), which I admit is grating my nerves) with a 147th.

However, what amazed me the most was that I was at a table with the blinds of 800 and 1200 that I actually stole 5 blinds (in 5 tries) and was never reraised, which was FINALLY nice to see happen in that rebuy ( I started to assume it was just an All_Aces myth ;) ). Though I did have a solid stack I was knocked out when my AK BB shove was called by a J 6 that overraised preflop and barely had the odds to call as a result (he raised 2k to 8 k and my stack was 22k). Was sort of frustrating ending both tournaments losing to jack rag all in preflop

The rebuy hand fairly late that was the most interesting to see (ie: the what was he thinking category), which nicely validated my theory that a lot of "luck" late in the rebuy is finding bad players badly overplaying hands:

*** HOLE CARDS ***
Dealt to Monteroy [9s Kc]
SconCAT: folds
brittarge: raises 800 to 1600
Monteroy: folds
sdm9201: folds
UnBalanced1: folds
woostma: raises 2400 to 4000
BRYAN1972: folds
lakefront: folds
BK COMBO: folds
brittarge: calls 2400
*** FLOP *** [Qc 8d 4s]
brittarge: bets 1600
woostma: raises 2400 to 4000
brittarge: calls 2400
*** TURN *** [Qc 8d 4s] [3h]
brittarge: bets 1600
woostma: raises 31794 to 33394 and is all-in
brittarge: calls 5390 and is all-in
*** RIVER *** [Qc 8d 4s 3h] [7s]
*** SHOW DOWN ***
brittarge: shows [6c 6s] (a pair of Sixes)
woostma: shows [Kd Kh] (a pair of Kings)
woostma collected 31630 from pot

As the hand was happening I was thinking if brittarge had QQ then I loved the way he played it with the calling raises and betting again small over and over to really annoy the opponent and force a call or raise. Sadly for him he just sucked instead and I have no idea what brittarge was thinking at any point in this hand. As much as people say winning coin flips is important, I think finding a brittarge is even more so.

Hope I didn't bore anyone too much with this. .

  • Nice post. I will have to say that I'm leaning towards the extremely stupid play and not extremely advanced but humble of you to even offer that as an option. You do need luck to win big tournaments like these, perhaps his call was one of those "I just had a feeling" calls. Ugh.
