  • I e-mailed the CAPS e-mail address as the phonen umber was disconnected. I received an e-mail back yesterday saying that everyone who had registered would receive a refund by cheque in the next week or two. If not you can always recoup your money from Paypal or Visa if that is how you paid.
  • I doubt this is a "grab the entry fees and run" scam. If it was, why would they stop taking new registrations and get word out to the speakers and sponsors that the event was cancelled?

It certainly does worry me that, even if the intentions of the organizers are on the up-and-up (who knows, given their not entirely ethical marketing campaign so far), the whole thing now probably has substantial financial problems.

Now that I've given it some more thought, it makes sense that they put a "sold out" message on the registration part of their website. This accomplishes the following.

    1. Blocks further registrations. (Assuming refunds will be given out, taking further registrations represents a cost to them.)

    2. May "save face" with an uninformed potential registrant with respect to their "tickets are almost sold out" campaign.

    3. May generate "hype" (again, among the uninformed) that this was a HOT event and sold out quickly.

    4. Since it is on the registration page, currently registered customers are unlikely to see this message, and such people are the ones who would eventually discover that the "sold out" messsage is a flat-out lie (again assuming refunds will be given).

    5. It will be easy for the organizers, if called on it, to pass this off as a website glitch, or a convenient (possibly pre-coded) way to end new registrations. Plausible deniability.

Overall, it's a tactic anyone could come up with, and is a tool often put into expert use by both the thinking elementary school student or cheating husband: covering up one lie with another.

Glad to at least hear something positive in terms of the possibility of a refund. Thanks for letting us know, witchdoctor.

  • Please read the sticky post regarding the cancellation of this event and possible alternatives above.

I'm not sure about Visa (or whatever credit card you used), but both* PayPal Buyer Protection and their buyer compaint system only cover physical items.

I've now also received the "you will be getting a refund by cheque within the next couple of weeks" email message from CAPS.

*These may actually be one and the same. It was hard to tell.
  • These guys are facing a potentially large legal action by both sponsors and participants. I think they will seriously consider the refunds.
  • Just when you think it can't get any worse...

My company received a fax sometime during the weekend from a company called Canada Fax Service Corp. advertising the already-cancelled Canadian Poker Summit.

    "Limited spots left...Register Now!!"

"Toronto March 19 - Only 53 spots left"

"Edmonton March 26 - Only 61 spots left"

"Calgary March 27 - Only 69 spots left"

"Vancouver April 3 - Only 68 spots left"

And, they still advertised "Advance Registration only $159 + GST (After Feb 11 - $179, After March 18 - $199)"

    Yep, that's what it said.

Communication breakdown, it's always the same...
  • Has anyone received their refund cheque from CAPS? I'm still waiting for mine.
  • Not yet.
  • i got mine back very quickly

oh wait....sorry, that's how it was accepted.
  • Any word if this is still going to happen?
  • woodman, i'm sure u mean the refunds, and not the event....right?...
  • Still haven't got mine either. What a load of crap this is. Somebody here or connected with CPP magazine must know who these guys are. I want addresses and phone numbers. Now.
  • I'm out $500 in books I shipped to Toronto. Sigh.
  • Well that is not encouraging...
  • anyone who used a Visa or MC to pay for their tix can now call their card company and complain that the event was cancelled without refund. Then dispute the carge and Visa (or MC) will chase down the operators. In the meantime, I believe they refund your $$$ themselves.

It's worth a call anyhow. Dave, I will try to help you out regarding your books when I get back into TO.

    Cheers.
  • Yep visa does that automatically They did that for crazy JETSGO too

No, I mean the event. There was discussion that the event would be held at a later date, organized by check 'n raise, but I haven't heard an update in a while.

Unfortunately, there seems to be a lot of confusion between these two summits.

I haven't heard any updates on the other (i.e. non-CAPS) summit. Here's a thread on that summit.

So you know who these guys are, but don't tell us?

Anybody know if Victor from the Canadian Poker Summit happens to be Chinese?
  • altho that seems like an odd question, i think i know why you're asking...but i don't know if he is
  • Was my post today deleted? I am sure I posted this morning. Well maybe something happened, not sure. Here goes again, as shown below.

CPS's number is now out of service, and they have ignored my e-mail requests (now 3) regarding refund status.

I've had enough, so I filed a complaint with RECOL about the Canadian Poker Summit today. Don't know if it will help but we'll see.

Is it just me, or does everyone here seem pretty close-mouthed about this? Something just doesn't make sense...

I don't know sht about this other then I am out the money. I think most on this board are in the same boat.
  • Probably - I just get the impression that nobody is doing anything about this, and you guys are content to sit back and be ripped off.
  • Closed mouthed? No... I got screwed by Jetsgo as well and I'm waiting until I get back from Vegas to file for a refund with Visa for both my flight and CAPS. I'll keep everyone informed about my Visa experience.

I do know of the people, but I am not in a position to publish personal information on the internet without permission. To me that is as scummy as what these people did in the first place.

What I actually meant was that I would forward Dave's information to the people I am in touch with regarding CAPS. This is not the organizers or anyone responsible for this mess. For the record, I also have not heard of any communication with the orgainzers since the event was officially cancelled in the first place.

It isn't that confusing. CAPS was scheduled in March. Organizers made off with the money after determining that costs would not be covered and have gone quiet.

Badboy, nobody has heard from them in weeks. Last I had heard, several of the sponsors were considering legal action due to fraud. As far as being mum about this, what is there to say? Dude made off with the money. File a complaint and I sincerely hope you get some action on this, as it will provide another level of protection for consumers in this sort of situation.

CnR wanted to pick up the pieces of the event and run with it, scheduled some meetings and determined that it would be unproductive to make the same sort of mistake as the original event. They had nothing to do with the original event in the first place other than being a possible sponsor and having Bob Ciaffone come and lecture. I had spoken to several people in regard to participating in another similar event (the one CnR was looking at) and then some people from the company and I went to Europe for the CAC. I believe they are still looking into finalizing some details before they announce anything further. It will be scheduled for the end of May if it happens.

Off the record (which is a relative term as I am writing this publicly on the internet), I think that I will make this event happen regardless of CnR's participation/production interests. I have met some larger players in the game and they all agree that this occurence is terrible for a community like Toronto, which happens to have a great reputation globally. We are seen as a hot bed of activity, interest and growth to the operators. I mentioned some ideas to them here (at the conference) and they will likely add something to the event once I get the details locked in.

I make no promises, but the situation is actually pretty simple: CAPS screwed everyone - file complaints with Visa, M/C, or whoever you can to reclaim the money. If I can get the information made public as to who the organizers were and where to possible reach them, I will, but that is unlikely and I am quite sticky about privacy issues.

CnR wants to 'save the day' but I am not sure where that all stands - I will check and report back here.

One way or another, we will have some sort of summit or poker camp or something here at the end of May. I am not sure what kind of costs we are talking about, but there was some information gathering happening last month on the issue. I know it would be no where near what the CAPS people were charging in the first place. IF things go well and everything works, I am pretty sure this event can me mobilized and brought to other areas of the country where there is appropriate interest.

    That's the scoop.

So you don't think you should even tell us their names? Not like I'm asking for their bank account numbers or anything. What is Charles' last name?

I have a RIGHT to know the names, as does everyone else who is out of pocket. These SOB's have our money.

If you are concerned about privacy, how about you go to RECOL and report what you know??? I have a couple leads on one other guy which I've already reported to RECOL.

Also, they know OUR personal information, addresses, Visa and Mastercard numbers etc., don't they?

Legal action and complaining to Visa/MC probably won't help, if these guys have disappeared. This is a criminal investigation now.
  • I received an email from the CAPS chairman after I inquired into my refund status.

    Here is the juicy part...

Please have my assurance that this will be resolved immediately. As a reminder again, you plus two guest will receive complimentary delegate registrations at of our next Summits (in any city). We will be contacting you as soon as the next date is set.

I got the same. Charles just doesn't know when to quit with the b.s. does he?

And, a "reminder"??? Did you tell us this before, Sir Charles?

Oh by the way, Charles, I must say you've made a complete fool out of yourself. Several times over. It's time to be a man and PAY UP.

    Now, where is my money?
