One of the New Trends in Online Poker

Bonus grinding. Doing some internet searches I was a bit surprised (though also not) to see there are even websites completely devoted to ginding out bonuses at many sites, with multiple accounts playing low limit multi tables.

I have not read the book based on low limit that many speak well of here, however I am wondering how much of the concepts of that book can be brought into the growing world of online poker bonus grind style of play. Typically 4+ tables are being played at the same time so it is very hard to get a feel of any of the other players or the table. Being tricky is distracting, just bet with the good hands and fold when you don;t have a good hand. Trying to outplay anyone is pointless, with the point being that the money you may give up playing a simpler game is eventually offset by the bonus.

The bonus grind style of play is kind of fun once in a while, something I equate to speed chess. I probably do about 4-5 grind sessions a week (about an hour each) and I find it to be a nice change from my much slower, patient NL game in sit and gos and tournaments.

I do think this bonus grinding style of play will continue to grow and it will be very interesting to see if any books try to incorporate it into their lessons on poker.

I just completed a grind session. It had a few more bad beats/suckouts then normal and a couple of tricky hands where I probably should have let them go but did not. Still, it also had nice people calling all the way when I had a good hand and even with the much higher bad beat content I ended up even (my last 4 grind sessions all were 10-40 profit ones).

A total of 256 hands were played on 4 tables of Party, and of them 165 were raked which equated to a prorated bonus of around $25 or so (currently need 1400 for the 200 reload bonus).

This may also show to some extent what life in the low limit Party poker scene is and I hope people enjoy. I will likely have to use 2-3 posts to include all of the hands (due tothe 10,000 character limit) and comments on any of the hands are welcome as always. Enjoy

If I was playing a higher limit serious game with better players I suspect I would have been out of this hand at some point. Maybe I should have folded at some point, but people bet and raise with the strangest hands at low limit so at times it is good just to call down with a solid hand and hope. This time it worked.

I love people that slow play the flop with an ok but hardly overpowering hand. They always pay nicely if that free card helps you out. Think I may have folded on a flop bet? Bet he wished he bet his top pair after.

OK, I lied when I said I never play tricky. My checking the turn here represented the total amount of tricky play I did in the hour. My hope was if he did not have a jack that he might call a bet on the river if his hand improved some. I was hoping he had a Q when I raised. His reraise made it obvious he had a jack and I just called figuring the house made enough from us already.

Give these guys credit, their raise/reraise on the flop pushed me out of a hand I would have won. Oh well.

This was my wild table. Any time I raised pre flop it seemed to come back to me capped by the same 2 people. I guess I could have raised some on the turn or river but I was doubting I was even winning. I knew I was calling all the way, glad that person decided A 2 was a top notch hand.

Heh, I guess I was never winning this hand. The frank person was the one I noticed by the end because he did manage multiple suckouts on this table which was by far the most aggressive. I wonder if gym had bet on the flop (I would have raised ) if that would have knocked frank out. Doubt it but it might have allowed gym to actually win this hand. Hey, I guess it saved me some money.

Well, I guess I am happy he called my river bet instead of raising. I guess he was genuinely concerned I had quad 3s. I will never complain when people win less off of me then they should, it adds up in the long run.

A hand from the wild I raise and it comes back capped pre flop table. I guess I could have let this AK go. I am not sure which was more funny - their pre flop hands or the fact I was basically drawing dead after the flop  Welcome to .5/1 Party limit poker ;)

Literally the last hand I played as the other 3 tables were closed by then. This hand really frustrated me, especially that raise on the river. I figured he probably had to have the flush but it was hard to actually fold. If I had that other guys A 10 I probably would have folded by the river if not sooner (though that was also a tricky hand to play). If I did not play this hand I would have ended up about $5!!!!

The one other bad beat of note that I forgot to get an email of was when frank called my raise preflop ( I had AK) flop was A 7 3 and he called me all the way with QJ hitting a jack on the turn and queen on the river. He did pay me off nicely on one hand but he did leave having a few more of my chips then I did of his (though his stack was dropping fast the whole time).

What this session did show me though was that if you play simple direct poker even with a higher dose of suckouts and bad beats you will still likely end up even + (even better if you consider the rake taken), and even+ is pretty much ideal for those grinding out the bonus as essentially I made $25 (in pro rated bonus I will soon receive) playing /5/1 limit by breaking even at the tables which equated to 25 BB for the 255 hands played or about 10BB/100 played.

10BB/100 hands while breaking even makes me think we will see more and more of this style of play in the future.
  • Typically 4+ tables are being played at the same time so it is very hard to get a feel of any of the other players or the table.

Two words. Pokertracker & GameTime+. I can multitable AND get reads without having to watch the action!

Oh, as for multitabling, it's not sometime people strictly do for bonuses. If you average 4BB/100 playing a single table, but average 2BB/100 when you play 4 tables at a time, you are winning 8BB in the same amount of time spent playing..

BTW, do we really need .50/$1 partypoker trip reports? Everyone here plays in those games and knows how bad they are..
  • if your really interested in grindin out bonuses, your best off playing party 1-2 limit, as almost every pot gets raked ($5 to get raked) and i cleared 455 hands last night, in about 4 hrs, 2-tabling for the most party, and i cleared a 420 raked hand bonus there the night before in like 3.5 hrs 3-tabling.....

im bonus whoring/grinding right now as well, started w/ free $50 on party and 12 days since, it is now $875 :)
  • I played .50/1 last night to clear 1100 raked hands and it took me just under 5 hours playing 3 tables at once. According to poker tracker I played just over 1400 hands. Almost every hand is raked on .50/1 tables. When I play 1/2 I get about 60% raked hands. Things seem a bit tighter at 1/2. BTW I was up $150 not including bonuses after all this time. When I try to clear bonuses I play .50/1 and when I play to make $$$ I play 1/2 or 2/4 bad beat. I've made some nice $$$ on the bad beat table when the jackpot is high. People seem to play very loose when the jackpot is high.

  • "BTW, do we really need .50/$1 partypoker trip reports? Everyone here plays in those games and knows how bad they are.."

That actually was not the major point of my initial post. The main reason I did these experiments was I was curious to see what type of BB/100 hand one could expect to win playing very simple, smart poker game (well I hope) in bulk within extremely loose and wild games.

Don't forget, many people say that these games can't be beat because someone will always hit their draw when you have 7 in each pot etc. The bad beats never stop etc etc etc. My sample of hands was to show that yes bad beats happen but who cares - they are simply part of the equation and nothing more.

Of my 5 limit grind test sessions I posted the one with the worst results, the one which had the highest number of bad beats to show that even in the worst case you should still break even playing fairly steady poker in the face of chaos, and by breaking even you are still clearing 10 BB/100 hands.

I appreciate the suggestions that poker tracker and such can help you get a better read on players and I am sure others are far better at playing 4 tables then I am which also will help. I am hardly saying my play/results are the best possible, in fact quite the opposite as they represent results based on a very simple method of play of a game I frankly rarely play otherwise.

In the end I am not really a bonus grinder, nor do I expect that to become a career of mine ;) . Still, the results lead me to believe that we will see more and more grinders hitting the low limit tables and their style will be something that serious low limit players should try to identify and take advantage of (not quite sure how, I have not thought that out in detail).

I just find the potential impact that this type of play (ie: bonus grinding) can have on low limit online poker to be an interesting one even though I very rarely play low level limit myself ;) , and in fact that is what makes poker interesting - ie: specific hands can be used to help present a more general point. How does one beat a table that are mainly grinders for instance?

    Edit to add:

"I've made some nice $$$ on the bad beat table when the jackpot is high. People seem to play very loose when the jackpot is high."

See, that is the type of situation that intrigues me. How many more BB/100 hands can one earn on these tables when the jackpot is above a certain amount? In a way it is finding pockets of order within the chaos and that is also what I was trying to do with these grinding experiments.

I dont normaly play 2/4 on regular table. I cant see why anyone would. I think that paying the extra .50 from the pot on the bad beat table is worth it. I cant say what the BB/100 difference would be but I can say that playing the 2/4 bad beat tables is same as 1/2 if not .50/1 on regular tables. Mind you need to have the bankroll to survive the occasional bad beat not worthy of a jackpot when some newb hits his hand.
