Chopping Etiquette??

I was in a $100 buy in last night and once we were 5 handed (top 5 paid) the big stack suggests a 5 way chop.

I generally have chopped quite often in the past and we all could have split and got more than we would have at that particular moment . But the last few tournaments my outlook has been changing...why in the hell did i just work my butt off for 4-5 hours? ...to chop?...I'm basically telling myself " I want to go into this tourney so I can split the winnings with everyone" ..so I started thinking a few tournaments ago I would'nt chop any more... I join these tournaments to win, whats the point of playing if I don't try and win?

Anyway back to the game, I tell all 5 remaining players I am probably not going to chop with anyone just as an FYI. ( and I hate when people try and make you feel guilty) a couple of the people frowned at me but there wasn't much objection at that point..moving along we get down to 3 handed and the short stack keeps wanting to chop, again i told him sorry but im here to win this thing not split it. Next hand he gets knocked out next hand in 3rd place and is totally bitter.

He gets his 3rd place winnings and comes back to the table and starts talking to the other player like "get him man, just knock him out" I thought this was totally absurd and annoying but kinda funny at the same time since i was still at the table and he wasn't.

after the tourney ended, he's like "see you could have had way more money man", I just told him I'm fully aware of that and I really don't give a **** and that I'm happier with less winnings knowing I tried my best.

So I guess the question is, i why do people get so upset when someone doesn't want to chop?...I've seen it so many times and people try and make you feel guilty. I'm going to refuse chops every time from now on, I really don't care about anything else any more except winning

Sorry about the long winded comment I really just needed to get that off my chest...any thoughts on MTT chopping the final places paid?

Cause they are bad players and they want to get more $ than they're worth.
  • life nits mostly.
  • Anton, I agree with you 100%. A 5 person chop would be way out of the question for me. Like you, I also play to win and cash as high as possible (although it doesn't happen often). I don't see the point in playing that good to get into the top 5 and then just throwing in the towel and settling for less.

Of course the short stack wanted a chop but if he had half a brain, he'd realize that a) the other two would be crazy to hand him a financial gift when they have him where they want him and b) that he was an ignorant asshole for being aggressive and unsportsmanlike. Where was the TD while he was railing for the other guys to bust you?

I can understand a 2 person chop if you're at a home game, it's late, the stacks are even etc...then fine but I'm never the one to suggest it, I'll play it out till it's over if I have my way.
  • How would you have ended up with more in a 5 way chop then getting 2nd place money? or is it that if you chopped final 3 you wouldve got more, if so i doubt it wouldve been a lot more. Either way I agree I hate to chop, in some situations its good to though, like the 1 table sngs at the rio during the wsop. Only 1st pays so usually when we get down to 2 there is some sort of chop.

they said 5 way chop woulda been 800 hundred each...when we got to 3 they said it would be 1200 each or 1500 to chop heads up, the 5 way chop would have been ridic especially considering i was second in chips, i declined as soon as they brought it up. 3rd place was upset with me since he woulda walked with 1200 if we did the 3 way but ended up with 750 or something, just under 8..
  • dont understand how 3 way chop gets 1200 each which is a total of $3600, but when down to 2 you only get $750 because 3rd would get less like 400 im guessing which is 1150 total which would mean first got 2450. seems like the math is off here lol
  • Yeah i think the figures are off two, i didnt count it myself since i didnt care, but im sure they were rounding down and up or whatever...I know 5th was 382, 2nd 1193 and 1st was 1900 and change
  • You only should be chopping single table satellites as BTP pointed out or if the structure turns into a bingo format. I have chopped several tournies 4-6 handed because everyone was relatively even and we all had less than 10BBs because of the blinds. Don't feel like flipping for 3-10K pay jumps after playing for 2-3 days.
  • Basically don't chop unless:

    a) you're getting more money than ICM, and that money is = or > than your actual EV
    b) the other player/players are as good as you or better
    c) the money is life-changing, and securing a certain amount of money far outweighs the small amount of EV you give up (this mostly applies when playing for amounts of money where running below EV in this one tournament may never be made up for the rest of your tournament career).

Generally chopping to reduce variance and stuff is a really dumb reason, and probably a good reason to stick to cash or SNGs and not play MTTs, lol.
