Port Perry Mini Tournament

I was just wondering if anyone has been to one of the Port Perry NL Mini Tournaments they have every wednesday?

If so, how busy is it? How long does 1 session last? How many sessions do they run?

Thanks,

  • I would also like to know how these are. But if I may add my own question as well....

What is the competition like. I figure the regular tables are lower limit stuff and that a lot of the regulars aren't overly interested in playing these tournaments. Is this more of a beginners, come one come all type event?

    thanks guys,
  • these tourneys are 50 to enter, winner take all 500 prize, 50 to house. the tourneys are no limit and last about 45min to an hour. most players who enter are live game players low limit to mid limit looking for something different.
  • they run all wednesday, and one goes right after the next. usually not too long of a wait.
  • Is there chopping? Or does the Casino frown on that?
  • really -- do they have multiple tables for this or just the one table and everyone has to wait for the next to start each time? very interesting but I figure a lot of luck comes into play ...

then again i can't imagine it is tough competition...
  • Every Wednesday and Thursday they are single table tournies, they run a multi-table about once per quarter.

    See: http://www.greatblueheroncasino.com/casino.htm
  • I would also like to know how the competition is.

For my 19th birthday (three weeks), I might head up there with some university buddies to meet up with our other friends and try playing in those tourneys. 8)
  • just wondering if there is any hotels in or near blue heron?
  • The casino is out on the Island (not really an Island, but they call it one) and I haven't seen any hotels or motels along the main road. However Port Perry will have a motel. As for a hotel I would say you need to stay in Whitby or Oshawa.
  • I played in one of these last Wednesday and it was awful, I'm never going back. I wouldn't even call it poker. They give you 40 chips, blinds start at 1/2 and DOUBLE every 10 minutes. By the time they get to 8/16 (maybe 15-20 hands in) the blinds are so large compared to the stack sizes that it becomes a question of either all-in or fold pre-flop. There are usually 9 or 10 people still in at that point, and most of them drop out at the 8/16 and 16/32 levels. So you have to either get dealt a monster hand within the span of 5 or 10 hands, get really lucky or go home. Absolutely no skill involved, it's just a crapshoot...and one with a 10% drop. You're better off playing roulette.
  • Well, it seems like I won't be making the 3-4 hour drive to try that out any time soon this summer...

    Thanks for the heads up.
  • My friend went in it the other day and said that the competition was pretty weak. I dunno though, playing $50 to win $500 isn't that good.

I agree with the first part, but a 10% house drop for a B&M tournament in actually very reasonable.

  • I went to portperry to check out these 1 table tournaments a couple of weeks ago.

    The Good
    - the house charge is very reasonable ($550 in entry fees they take $50 so that is 9% house charge) Most online sit goes have a higher charge.

    - winner take all (deals can be made)
    - invest $50 to win $500 (great return on money for a 1 table freeze out)
once again consider an online sit and go. 1st place would be $250
-from what I saw the day I was there players play very poorly( too loose in the beginning and too tight at the end) eg. 4 handed a player has 80% of his chips in as the big blind and folds to a raise. I saw that sort of thing happen many times.
    - The winer has the option to stay for the next game without being on the list.

    The Bad
    - blinds double every 10 min
    - the list was long the day I went
    - the dealers have to wash and count the cards after every hand ( this really slows things down in fact i started the tournament as the button with blinds of 1 and 2. When the big blind got to me the blinds were 4 and 8. We had two increases in blinds and hadnt had one complete round of the table yet. lol

I havn't decided if it is worth my time to play in these mini tournaments.
Just in case any one is curious I played 2 that day and was out early in both of them. I had AK against AA in the 1st one. AK against QQ in the 2nd
  • Hello everyone

Am new to this board and haven't been playing for long (Year and 1/2)

However I do find the mini tourneys at the blue heron exciting (maybe cause am a newbie to the game).

This is what I wrote about the Blue Heron tourney in a non-poker forum:
It starts at 10:00 in the morning till 12:00 midnight or until people stop signing up. It's first come first serve and there are 11 players per game.

If you show up early you could probably play 4 games if you have the loot.

I've seen this one guy win 3 games in a row (you have the option to remain seated for the next game if you win)

OnThe $50 buy-in (wednesdays) the House takes $50 bucks and the winner receives $500.

On Thursdays its the same but $100 buy-in and a $1000 prize.

Blinds are doubled every 10 minutes with a starting blind of 1/2

you get 40 tourney chips regardless of the buy-in

There is a ton of chumps that go all in on stupid hands...

shit even I made a mistake today during my first game of going all in with pocket A's while there was 9 people remaining! Never again! I lost straight of the flop against a pair of cowboys and 10's, and that dude lost on the river against some chick that WENT ALL IN with a Q2 suited catching the Love flush on the river!

    I love this place but...

This is the only place that I play at and now my loosing streak is at 3 weeks...lol while my buddy's winning streak is 4 weeks with a decent net profit.

If anybody recommends other places for a student of the game please do so. I only play no limit and I live near the Durham area.

    Cheers
