  • Sell it. If you really think you are overwhelmed, take the money and run.
  • Man. That sounds good. If I knew the organizers, I'd ask you how to get into the game, but I'm always reluctant to spend any significant amount of cash on a tournament if I don't know the organizers. Unless, of course, it's in a casino. Because casinos never lie, cheat, or steal. Ever.

I think BBC's advice is the best. If you feel out of your league, it would probably be better to sell your seat and use the 1K (or whatever you get for it) to play in a number of smaller tournaments. If you enjoy success at the smaller levels, it might be worth taking a shot at the Big One in a year or two.
  • If you can sell it, sell it. It sounds like you don't have nearly enough experience of bankroll to really be playing in this. $1k cash could do you a lot better than a chance at an entry for a 5000 person tournament.

If you can't sell it and must play...just relax. You won't become a significantly better player from now until Monday, so just do your thing, and hopefully it works out.

    good luck.
  • Sell it?!?!?!?! What are you, a weenie?!?!?!?!

Win it. That's my advice. Then, win the WSOP and get on the cover of Cigar Afficianado.

Seriously? Very tough and very broad question. My advice is play the best you are able -- your "A" game. Enjoy the experience. Take notes. And, when you are done, ask questions and we will all puzzle over the situations you describe.

Sell it? Uh, not me. If you are an amatuer player (like me) the WHOLE reason that you play poker is to enjoy it and dream ridiculous dreams. Selling it would, for me, spoil the dream.
  • Hear! Hear!

Thank you, Dave for showing the true gambler's spirit!

I say play with gusto. If you are totally outclassed, revert to the classic Sklansky defense!

    Live that dream, boy!
  • Sell it?!?!?!?! What are you, a weenie?!?!?!?!

Nope, I'm a rationalist. I'm all for gambling it up, but at the right time. The posters implied nervousness towards the tounament lends me to believe that could be in over his head. Maybe big time players like yourself sneeze at a grand, but to the rest of us peons, it's a large sum of money.
  • Playing scared = dead money.

I see your point Dave, and I agree with it to an extent (I'm all about parlaying) but I think that if Yayiwin doesn't feel up to it, the $1000 could be better spent on a number of smaller events.

That being said, I hope that Yayiwin wins it if he decides to play it, and then goes on to win the WSOP.
  • My tongue is in my cheek. However, we should all ask ourselves "Why do we play poker?" My assumption is that Yayiwin played in the first satellite because he/she plans on playing in the $1000 event. If I am right then advice like "don't play" doesn't seem too helpful (although sober second thought is always useful).

It is hard, however, to offer helpful advice without a more specific question.

In satellites what I do at the outset is know how many chips I need for a seat. So, with thirty starters at $1000 chips each and three prizes then you know that with three players $10,000 with be average stack. If you have $5K in chips you are probably not going to get a seat. If you have $8K you might. If you have $12K you are guaranteed. So, in the middle stages you can measure your risk against you stack size. Do you have enough chips or do you have to gamble?

Also seriously, if you ARE that intimidated then you should sell it. I didn't interpret the original post as being that intimidated.
Maybe big time players like yourself sneeze at a grand, but to the rest of us peons, it's a large sum of money.
Finally, the idea that I am a big time gambler is wrong. $1K is a lot of money to me too. In my case, I don't blink spending it on "the dream" because that is WHY I play poker. I don't really play to make money, per se. I make money when I play so that I can play. If that makes sense?

With apologies, I did not mean to offend.
  • I think you should give it a go! Don't get me wrong, I would drool at the $1k too, but I would love the opportunity to play in a larger tournament. Like Dave says, bring your best game and mentally prepare for your game (maybe some reading).

Maybe you will find that you can play in this tournament, and you belong there dammit! =)
  • Play it, until you challenge yourself at a higher level you'll never really know what you can achieve.

Just remember once the tournament starts the $1000 is gone, and just play to win. You can't worry about the buy-in or the $10,000,000 (or whatever) you'll get once you win the WSOP. Just deal with the task at hand and play great poker
  • With apologies, I did not mean to offend.
No offense taken, you loose-cannon maniac!!!

  • back to the topic at hand...

i have a question for yayiwin:

do you have the confidence in your shorthanded/headsup play to believe that you can make the top 2?

because im sure that to get into the 1000+100 tourney it was through a large satellite, and its is very different trying to make the top 2 rather than the slipping into the the top 9 or 10 or whatever. that, with the added (but maybe slight) ingredient of intimidation, and you might be in trouble once it gets down to 4 or 3 (of course, unless you got there through a double shootout or something).

anyway, if you take a run at it we wish you the best. i think im in the dave camp (being the artsy idealist i am). if you lose, youve only invested a fraction of 1100 so theres no shame..but if you win...youve made your life lol :D

  • Well boys,i'm gonna play it,there was never any question of not wanting to play.I have a plan of attack for this tourney. The players involved are winners of a Sunday super sattelite at Truepoker .com.The winners of the Sunday 6k tourney get a seat in the 1000$ event(THATS ME).The list of players in this event i am very familiar with and play 200 or 500 max buy in NL with a number of them daily.A few of these players i find to be very weak and as well arent really close to the standards of BIG TOURNEY poker.I myself have played a number of live tourneys this year with a fair amount of success.On-line on this particular site im in the top 100 ranked tourney players and no-one on the list entered is even close.I expect this to be the absolute best shot i have to get a seat for this years main event. For preparation i have been trying to play high buy in 20 player sit n gos to help prepare myself as well as taking notes onas many players as i can.(I have a 2nd account i can log on and watch said players and they dont know its me watching and taking notes on they're play)For the tourney i think tight play early maybe the first 2 rounds then start to loosen up with some small pot poker.Raising in position, trying to pick up some small pots with the weaker players in.Selling the seat was never an option for me.

Thanks all for your input i will be sure to post results for those who are interested with some hands for mind food.
Also i'm going to play 2 big live tourneys this weekend in hopes that i will be focused on the task at hand when the time comes.Really I havent been able to stop thinking about it since i won my seat a month ago.I,m nervous as hell but confident in my abilities to play big time poker.
Again thanks to all who responded and if you want to watch or root on one of your boys its
Trupoker.com Monday night 11pm my screenname is Firestopper!
  • Some replies to Daves comments..I dont play poker to make money.I make money playing poker!Thers a big difference there.Ive beenplaying since the GTA had those silly "charity" casinos running in the city back in the day.I play for the love of the game and the competition it brings.I come from a competitive sports backroound ie:(Junior hockey AAA baseball ect..)I find this game to be the most enjoyable mentally challenging "sport" there is .Which is why i think i do fairly well for myself. My wife and the boys i play regular with say i can win it.I know i can win it.I'm going to mentally visualize myself while im playing this SAT tourney like im at the club i play at.Cool ,calm and semi-aggressive :)I dont mean to ramble on, this might just be me releasing some of that nervous energy before the big game.
Oh and by the way the WIFEY has given me full clearance to play all the big tourneys this year at the local B+M's around here(Herron CPT events), so if any of you play these i look forward to seeing you in the events ! GL

    GO BIG OR GO HOME!

    Yayiwin..
  • Boo. Ya.

GL Yayiwin. Hopefully I'll see you March 9th at the CPT event at Port Perry.
  • Yaywin it sound like your preparations are very thorough. Almost certainly more thorough than most of the competition.

Good luck. See at the WSOP.
