Dice control notes

I watched my dice control DVD again.

I'm not sure dice control works.

I personally don't know anyone who can control the dice. I don't claim to have a controlled shot. If there is some control of the dice then the effect is probably very small, less than 0.5%. Nevertheless when I do play, I set the dice and try to hit my numbers. It's more fun to play trying to control your destiny than thinking you're playing a suckers game.

Here are the summary notes on the DVD.

Only make your bets when the dice are in the centre of the table.
Wait until the dealer pays the bets from the roll.

Buy into a craps game when the dice are in the centre of the table.
Never buy in when the shooter has the dice.

Always keep your hands high.

Memorize how much to bet before hand.

Tip the dealers by making a pass line bet.

Having a dice controller partner is a good thing. This allows you to help each other.

No system can work against a house advantage.
You must make bets that are beatable with dice control skill.

Use energy to give the dice a gentle backspin to dissipate enough energy so the dice hit the table and die, and gently hit the back wall. A slight forward momentum should cause the least randomization.

Stand as close as possible to the back wall.
If you shoot right handed, shoot from stick left 1
Watch the dice as they are passed to you to prepare to set the dice quickly.
Use the Hardways set when you seek to make a point.
For the come out roll use the all 7's set
Keep a set of dice with you constantly.

Grip

Use the 3 fingered grip - 3 fingers in the front
Middle finger and thumb hold dice.
Go down over the table top and tap the table.
3 fingers straight across the front

Hitting the back wall.
Fingers straight across the dice.
Bottom of the dice straight with the table.
Front of the dice square with the table.
Pendulum swing.
45 degree angle release.

Spinning the dice.
Backspin, keeps the dice stable.
2-4 spins on the dice in the air before they hit.

Controlling the bounce.
Dice should hit solidly on the felt.
As much as possible you want the dice to hit square and dissipate their energy.
One bounce. Hit the back wall. die.

Hold the dice softly.
Dice should slip from your hand with their forward momentum

Land on the table 6-10 inches from the back wall.

Align your throw with the lines on the table.

Use a mirror when you practice throwing at home.

How to bet.

Never bet on anyone else except yourself or another controlled shooter.

Never make bets that have a house advantage above your skill.

If you can't resist betting on other people then use the 5 count to qualify shooters. Make small pass/come bets and put most of your bet on odds.

5 count.
Reduce the number of shooters you bet on.
Increase the chance of betting on a controlled shooters.
Don't bet on a shooters until he rolls the numbers (4,5,6,8,9,ten) five times.

Bet small on the pass or come. Make most of your bet on the odds.

It is best to shoot with other controlled shooters.

Don't betting.
Bet once per shooter. If the shooter knocks you off. Stop betting until the next shooter.

Betting on yourself.
Increase your bets when you have won 3x your bet size.

Bankroll.
You need about 500x your average bet spread in your bankroll.
ie, if you have a bankroll of $500 you should be playing dollar craps.

Keep your bankroll separate. Keep your bankroll in something like a money market fund.

Using comps.
Most casinos return 30 to 50% of your theoretical loss.

Always tip on top of your bet. It increases your average bet.
Always ask for a comp 30 min before you plan to leave.

Practice daily 45 min to an hour., build muscle memory.

Practice before you play.

Dice should be gripped by the finger 1/4 of the surface.

Everything should be squared.

Never play when you are tired.
Play when well rested.

Dealers need tips,
Tip when you first come to the table.

  • Seems that, if the dice "slip" from your hand as suggested, there would be a lateral spin imparted that would be deemed "bad" by the authors.

Yes, according to the DVD you put backspin on the dice so that they land with less forward motion and hit the back wall softer.

If i really wanted to understand dice control, I'd take high speed video of my throws and analyze it in slow motion.

As I said above. I'm skeptical of dice control.

In any event, it's fun to 'pretend' that you are not playing a suckers game and have control of your destiny.

Dice control certainly can't hurt your chances... Or can it?
  • My personal position on dice control is similar to DD on the bj21.com forum where he says...

Re: dice control ... the following is a POTM from the green chip boards at BJ21.com from 2006.

After investing quite a lot of time and a good bit of money in lessons, equipment, etc, I have decided to all but quit craps. While I had a good bit of success the first few months, actually winning over $100,000, I subsequently lost it all back and believe that my good fortune was nothing more than variance. I have met and shot with many who consider themselves to be skilled shooters. I have not been impressed with anyone and have yet to see anyone I consider to be a serious advantage player betting real money. The only people I see claiming that they do well are those selling books, equipment, and seminars.

Now, I am not saying that I do not believe that some small level of influence is possible or that it is not possible to obtain a small edge under some very narrow set of conditions. But I do not believe it is viable as a serious revenue generator. If anyone should see me at the tables in Vegas please don't jump in betting money even if it looks like I'm betting a good bit. I consider some tables to give me around zero ev and will play them on occasion if I have extra value added, such as RFB, airfare, cash coupons, free tournament entries, etc. I have a sufficient bankroll that I can afford to do this as a comp hustle on a limited basis. But my team is no longer financing or interested in craps what so ever. I now look at it the same way as video poker players who play games close to zero ev and them come out slightly ahead when adding in various extra value things they get from the casino.

I am not posting this to get into a debate with anyone. But I do know that others, as I do, look at what other serious advantage players are involved in something as a guide as to whether they will invest time and money in something. I do not wish the fact that it is known that I have spent some time with this to influence anyone in a positive way. The amount of time and money it will take to get anywhere with this, which I'm not sure is even possible, I believe would be much better spent sharpening skills at any other type of advantage play.
