Help with Charity Tournement

Hey guys I am sure there has been posts on this before but I couldn't find any. Looking at doing a charity tournament to raise money for my hockey team, was just going to see if anyone has any experience with this and what I need todo to make it legal? Also advice for running it.

Thanks in advance.

  • Are we talking about keeping this shindig legal, or "legal". Most of these charity fund-raising tournies are not, strictly speaking, legal. But it is unlikely that you will get raided. Based on prior threads, the main thing to avoid is publication of whether or not alcohol will be available at the site. As long as that is kept off the radar, your chances of getting in trouble go way down.
  • I run them 2 to 3 a week for a company called Poker Pigs. There is no "legal" and fundraising in a single phrase. There is only grey area and staying under the radar. One complaint from any citizen and you will get a call from the police. No complaint no call. I have had a number of such calls with cancelled tournaments. The last was just last week in Bradford. That followed with a very candid and congenial conversation with the authorities. The authorities must follow up on any and all complaints. They are not interested in one of tournaments to raise funds but there is no way to make them "Legal". Poker tournaments are the "J walking" of the Federal Laws. If you do it and there is a problem you will get charged. If you do it constantly, it creates the problem and you will get charged. Once charged it is up to the Attorney General's Office to decide if the charges will be persued or dropped. If persued it is up to the Judge to decide guilt or innocence. If you are still not sure go back and read between the lines.
