General Poker ramblings from a bit of a newbie.

Hi there,

I love card games... I don't know many to be perfectly honest but I love just about any card games I can play it doesn't matter.. Poker, big 2, crazy 8s, go fish etc.

The past year or so now I have really, really been getting more into poker more now mostly hold em which is well the norm i'd figure.

I don't get to play much in person or pretty much at all it is completely pokerstars pretty much which I generally enjoy for it's tournaments they have going..don't get quite nearly as excited for just regular old games.. I think I do alright I've won a couple tickets into next round for the big game show and I advanced a round or two into a PCA as well.

and yes now i've really started to get the bug I want to play in person and I'd like to play for money as well.. however I feel that would be pretty intimdating you know?

I see there are a few players here from B.C anyone in the lower mainland? Just wondering what is the atmosphere at say Edgewater been like? I've been to the place a few times now but never in the poker room... any advice at all on where to get started?

  • Macke, the casinos on the west coast, and well, BC and Alberta in general (I can't speak for back east) are pretty soft. They are generally pretty good natured with the exception of the Edgewater (in my experience)...found it rather uptight. If you are new to the live game, you likely don't want to jump in and drop 2-500 bucks on a cash table... Your best bet is to meet some like minded people and find a few local home games where the stakes are lower. Get a feel for handling the cards and chips in person..find your comfort zone...then go to the casinos.
  • that's some good advice from dennis. you may also want to take a look at trying pub tournaments, they're usually quite friendly, some are free and players play for points. it's a good way to get into the live game to understand the game better. if you have friends who also enjoy the game, then it's a good idea to try to get people together and start playing. where are you located in the lower mainland?
  • I am in Burnaby.

I was just looking at some sites early and it seems most casinos have a 30 dollar tournament or what have you that seems it wouldn't be so bad.
  • yeah, those are usually good, filled with pensioners that are way too tight...lol

As Tony said, there are some free pub games as well, like Big Slick Poker Tour that you can play for free and win some decent prizing. A good foot in the door for live games.
  • Hm yeah that seems like it could be good. I mean i'd like the tournaments but man do they start early.. 10 in the morning? c'mon.

Big Slick looks good, they dont give you much info on the site though.. what kind of prizes >_>

Nightly location prizing varies, but the ultimate outcome is to place in the top X number of places (depends on average number of players) to be invited to the season finals. At the season finals, area dependent, you will play off for tourney seats..anywhere from 330 buck seats to 1100 seats. (depending on number of locations attending) Top 20% of season finalists go on to the Provincial finals, where you will play for WSOP pkgs. We also have daily online tourneys and freerolls on Sundays.

Each area (lower mainland, okanagan, thompson/cariboo) play off for different things for nightly/season prizes...depending on sponsors and locations.
  • That sounds good.

I guess the New West location is closest to me... I know each location would be different but any estimation on how many people show up?

Sorry if I am really sounding more newbish but how is it set up? Just a bunch of people playing a whole bunch of different games at tables?

I'd really have to brush up on some other games then, bah razz.
  • If you look at the standings for the location, you can view each night separately...then you can see how many are showing up each night.

The game is standard across Canada. NLHE, each player starts with 5k chips. 20 min. blinds. Games run approx. 4 hours.
  • That sounds good.

I think i'll try it out
  • I'm off to my first real live tourney.. man I don't like dealing.

Good luck Macke, just relax, have fun and enjoy... There are a LOT of people that are uncomfortable dealing. After 2 or 3 times you'll be a natural and after you have won a world series event we'll be able to say we knew you when... ;)
  • Thanks.

Watched my favorite hellmuth blow ups for good luck

    This is so sick
