Is this gonna be ok? Legal or shutdown?

Will this be a go? I don't understand the laws.....its an excerpt from an invite i got.....

"Hi everyone, I'm hosting a Poker Tournament for (sport team name omitted) team I play for. It's going to be held @ the (Bar name omitted) Lounge on April 2nd from 11pm-6:30pm. Buy in will be $100 for $10,000 in chips $80 into the pot + 5$ for rental of the Room and $15 for the Team, and for pre tournament add ons we'll give you the option to donate $20 or $40 for an extra $2,000 or $4,000 in chips. I'm hoping for 100 People so the winner would be over $2000 and paying the top 10-15. Ask for details."

  • In Ontario, this would be illegal (not sure about BC). Probably would not get shutdown unless someone complained.

ya i forgot to mention its bc. really gambling laws like this are that much stricter huh?
  • I'm pretty sure the same situation in BC.

These happen all the time here in Ontario Darb and as Hobbes said, it's just a problem if for some reason the game comes to the attention of the cops or BC lottery corporation.
  • One key factor is whether or not alcohol is available. This increases the risk factor exponentially...

Sadly, this is why so many different poker forums have entire sections dedicated specifically to poker legislation.

....er, not that I have ever looked at other poker forums or anything..
  • Unless someone gets cheated or Grandma decides to go have a beer at 11pm that night and is pissed because she lost at Bingo. She decides to make a phone call, you should be 75% okay. I don't see too many of these shut down. It's the guys who are running these constantly and making huge profit.
  • It is very illegal...but, as said, most of the time a blind eye is turned by the cops. Very risky for the pub though, as the liquor board won't turn a blind eye...they risk a 10k fine and loss of liquor license.
Even under a Class B Gaming license, this is run incorrectly with said structure.

Go take it down, these are full of weak players!
  • You should inquire if they are "420 friendly" . . . and Dennis is right, if I can FT one of these, you should be able to win one w/o looking at your cards . . .
  • from what i heard, what you can do is instead of giving a cash prize, is to hand out actual prizes, like an ipod, car alarm or other stuff. now, i'm no expert, but i don't see any reason why someone who won the first prize gift, wouldn't be able to sell it to someone for an amount equal to the amount that would have been awarded in the first place.
