Q on Live Tourny and BR management

Ok we don't get the nice guarantee's in BC as you do in Ontario, but there is a juicy tournament coming up at a casino here.

It's a 100+10 Buy-in, with $1000 added to prize pool.

My Bankroll is just over 800.

I consider myself a winning player at live poker, but we all know that live donkaments will always come down to a coin flip.... and It is 1/8 of my BR.

Do you guys think it's worth the risk?

  • yes.

brm doesnt really apply to live mtt because they run so infrequently.
  • The simple answer is no, you don't have the roll to play this.

    But...

If you consider yourself a winning player, how long would it take to earn it back? Take the chance, have fun.
  • Sometimes playing over your bankroll is a great way to gage the status of your game.

Take your shot, I say. You can always build your roll back later.

Awesome guys, thanks. Totally the answer I was looking for. Wish me luck! Good ol' live donkaments.

I would offer BAP, but you know, live tourny and all. You would only have my word whether I cashed or not, and who would trust the word of a guy whose name is Syphilaids?

How are you a winning live player with only an $800 bankroll? Does not compute,

Anyhow, it's only $100 just go play it I guess....I assume we have different definitions of poker bankrolls.

Life gets in the way bro.
GF wanted a new bed; Got laid off due to shortage of work; paying off student loads etc.
All this stuff comes right out of BR.

I play live 1/2 about once a month now on average, and I'm looking back over the course of 2 years when I was living off of it.

Ok, so we have different definitions.

    What he said.
  • Bank roll = life roll??
  • Seems to me lite you don't have a live bankroll. 800 dollar swings at the 100 dollar level shouldn't even hurt, not sure you can apply brm here

There is only one relevant question....

If you lose this money how much of a pain in the ass is it going to be to replace it.

For example, if I lose a chunk I can just add up to $2k to my BR from other sources. So playing in a $500 tourney isn't an issue for me (even if it's 10% of my total BR).

However, if $100 is going to take you a long time to replace AND it forces you to move back down in stakes or change what you are doing with your long term overall poker strategy then.... I wouldn't.
  • I suggest using $50 from your life money and $50 from your bankroll. Split the winnings in the same way.

If you actually are still at the point where poker is still a fun thing to do then theres no harm in using life money as its the same as a night out.

I would feel your still at the point where poker is fun from reading your posts. You have a lot to learn on BRM but guess you are posting in a place where help is at hand.

    no.....
    but...
Try explaining to your wife that after an 8 hour shift at the casino and bringing home $600 that you can't really afford to buy a bed because it's "Poker Money"....

Plus I had to pay myself out a lot when I lost my job. That wasn't fun. Cut My BR down to 1/4, watched 3/4 shipped to my land lord....

Anyway this has gone off topic.
This is the reason why I rarely play live poker. I use real life money when I play 1/2, and pay 75% of winnings into real life fund. Not a good idea, I know, but this is why I basically stopped.

$800 is my total BR for poker. I think I like the idea of paying 50-50. Thanks for the tips guys, On saturday night my BR will be 4K!

Oh and losing $100 not that big of a deal. Just gotta get another 1st place on a $11 27man. Or work a day. gg.

Be like the rest of us.. Lie your ass off and show her the meager $50 you made again tonight while the rest sits in your sock.

    Cool story bro...
  • Why would you lie about your poker winnings if you're in a serious relationship? Do you lie about your income at your job?
  • GTA Poker wrote: »

If you only had a small roll and were adding meager amounts to it as you won (even if that was regularly) and knew that it would be raped (having a potentially substantial amount removed for 'life' expenses) regularly, and yet you want to be a serious poker player and know that your 'real-life' income allows your family to live with no real discomfort. That would be a reason to withhold how well you were doing at the tables.

Having said that, would I dip into my bankroll if there was a situation that required it? Of course, but then it would be MY decision under MY control.

Do you allow your SO to have complete access to your bankroll at all times? Does he/she have the ability to simply remove money from it at will?

HELLLLL no. Not that I don't trust her, I just don't want her keeping tabs of the times I pull out 1/2 my BR to go play 1/2NL. heh.

Anyway as a side note, I got 6th for 580. THe pay out was so top heavy. 3500 for first.

The blind structure really sucked in that game. The blinds doubled every 2 blind raises. Soon i went from 2000/4000/200 with 12BBS right to 6000/12000/500 and 4bbs.

Picked up QJs in bb, BU pushes, I call and he barely has me covered. GG me.

Was card dead entire final table except having AK in bb and taking out a small stack. Table was sooo bad though.
Watched a guy go all-in for 3 bbs. folds to BB with a stack of ~10 bbs.
BB hums and haws, then shows an A and folds. lol.

No, my poker bankroll is separate from my real-life monies. That's what makes it a poker bankroll. She does not have access to it, but I'm sure she can figure out the rough amount when she sees bills wrapped in an elastic sitting on the table, etc.

structure seems typical for lower buy-in live mtts
