Online vs In Person: No Limit Texas Hold Em

How's everybody doing today?

I'm new here, in my early 20s, and feel pretty determined to improve my game.

So in order to do that, it's important to understand the differences between playing online and playing in person.

According to you, what are the main differences?

Mine are:

1) Few ways to judge a person on the table. The main way is by his or her betting patterns.

2) Distractions online are numerous. Whether it's chatting on msn/facebook, watching porn, reading the news, whatever.

3) Annoying for your eyes

4) Withdrawing money from online poker sites takes forever! In person, you get it in an instant

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

  • I have just started in the last month playing on line. I haven't done too bad.
it seems the MTT micros 90 or less I have an easier time getting to the final table but the payouts are not that great.

I have cashed in a couple of the larger 2K 5K and 7.5 K gtd for like $10.00 or less that have had upwards of 5 to 6 thousand players.

It's a long grind and You can't get by some of the luck boxes. Suckouts come fast and often.

Try not to get involved with phone calls email and all of the other distractions
while playing at home. patience is a big factor like playing at a live table.

Things that I don't like about on line are 1' players who will sit there every hand and let time run out. 2' arseholes who shoot of their keyboards while playing. Whining about the donkey call That someone else made to cripple their stack even though they were way behind after trying a bluff.

Live poker you can get a feel for the table and some good reads if you are alert and know what to look for.

  • If you are going to play on line you need to get a software program to run with your poker site. Holdem Indicator and Holdem manager are excellent. Tournament Indicator is great for sit and go's.

If you don't have one of these you are at a severe disadvantage.

As far as withdrawing money it's a piece of cake. Sign up for instadebit. 3-4 days the moneys in your bank account.

  • @ HVEEPOKER: great points, especially about being patient. Sometimes you have to accept not even seeing ONE face card for hours on end lol

@ Bitter Bill: thanks for the software suggestions. But like The Prophet 22, can you describe how these programs improve game???
  • I use Tournament Indiscator as I play no cash games on line. It tells you your win% preflop based on your hole cards. it tells you your win percentage preflop against big pocket pairs, medium poket pairs, low pocket pairs, two big face cards, suited connectors and any random two cards that don't meet the criteria I just laid out. It groups your preflop cards into Slansky's group of nine and gives you long term expected value of those cards if you were to play them for 100 concecutive hands.

After the flop it will give you your win percentage on the flop, turn and river if you play each street. it will give yours and your oponents percentage to hit, High card, one pair, two pair, three of a kind, str8, flush and full house based on the cards on board and the probable cards your oponent would be playing.

It keeps track of yours and your oponents VPIP, Preflop raise%, Cbet
%, how often you or your oponent fold to a cbet, the % of times you or your oponent attempt to steal or fold to a steal, and if you are on a winning streak or losing streak and how many chips you acumulated or lost during that streak. It also tracks how many big and small blinds you and your oponents have left.

It will store yours and your oponents stats for 365 rolling days so if you play an oponent a month later you alreaddy know everything about them.

If you and an oponent go to show down and he loses to you it will show you his mucked cards so you know what he was playing.

I wouldn't be playing on line without it.

There are a few other things it keeps track of but i have gone on long enough.

It cost $90 U.S. for a lifetime liscense and they are constantly updating the software so it can store more information.

I know this all to well lately. Wife comes in from the other room when she hears me groan. just in time to hear the last nasty curse word I have mumbled at the screen. A couple of minutes later I am quietly going about it again.
I was considering software to help. I have heard a lot about Sharkscope. But I don't think it runs with Full Tilt or Pokerstars but I can get results of players if I google there screen name. not much info if they haven't subscribed. The website says I can use it for 6 months free if I make a deposit on one of 3 sites I do not wish to play on. I will check out this tourney indicator though.
  • full tilt and poker stars are the most popular, they should be compatible with that type of software..
