New Montreal Live Venue launching, Playground Poker Club
Been reading the articles coming out on this one, they have a high stakes room said to match Bobby's room for atmosphere. Not all the details of the club are out yet, but they know what 4 Aces has to offer and figure they have it beat, so it should be sweet, since all trip reports I have read have been positive from there. I know it took a year to build and WSOPE bracelet winner Erik Cajelais, a former FullTilt & 888 top guy Justin Kelly and the former chairman of the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, David Montour are all behind this one.
They are kicking things off with a VIP Party and 10k guaranteed Freebuys this weekend (Dec. 17th). Brad Booth and Edmonton's Valerie Ross are both heading there for this, them making the trip from the west might be a good indicator it will be a good time for anyone in the area that might want to pop in.
No word on big events yet, but being on Kahnawake usually means a little easier time getting online sats, so good sign.

Montreal's Playground Poker Club is quite possibly Canada's best new poker room. One of my friends felt like style wise, it reminded her of the room Caesar's Las Vegas boasts. The menu is awesome and on opening weekend they were spreading 1/2 No Limit Hold'em all the way up to 10/25 NLH. They had about a dozen cash games going, 1-2-5 Pot Limit Omaha up to the "Big Game" of 25/50 PLO, which pros Eric Cajelais, Nenad Medic and Marc Karam were all mixing it up in. The room is not a casino, so they focus on poker only and had 2 tournaments a day, at 1:00 and 7:30 and even guaranteed the prize pools for some. They had some fun promotions going like a $500 bonus if you could bluff Full Tilt Pro Mike "Timex" Mcdonald on the river of the 1/2 NL game. Well worth checking out for anyone planning on being in the area.
Where are you finding the rake structure?
Anyway, I have heard grumblings that Mohawk may become a casino in the next couple of years offering Poker. There is supposed plans to add on to the east side of the building and build a state of the art poker room.
It will be interesting to see if this develops and if it will be limit like the charity casino or N/L like Fallsview, Niagara and Rama.
That won't happen in even your lifetime... Mohawk, despite the name, is not native land.. The rumour has been around for the last 10 years at least.
I heard from a couple of people I know who work there. There was a whole redevelopment plan including resort style hotel and Golf Course around the track and vicinity.
lol, I know some of the management on the track side and this issue pops up every year or so. There WAS a development plan but it was squashed several years ago. It was for a golf course and hotel, but never had a casino...
There was a move afoot about three years ago to revive it but don't think funding to even do the study could be found...
What's the rake structure and buy in limits?
5% capped at $14 in 5/10, $25 in 10/25, and $100 in 25/50 PLO (private game)
Canada Poker has a huge gallery and some video of the room up now.
The lower stakes rake is a just little higher than casino for sure, but "Club" is the operative word here.
Free food and booze while you play, and the menu has some high end items. They are also guarnteeing prize pools for a ton of tourneys, so some dollars will definetly be returned there.
The PLO/high stakes rake is what seems most under fire, but it is essentially a private game, private room, own security, own waitress, all sorts of comps, massage girl on hand. I talked to 25/50 players on this, and none so far from Calgary think it's unreasonable as this atmosphere is good for the game. One compared it to the Commerce saying, free food didn't do anything, but anytime the booze is comped, the game gets juicy, like in Vegas or Playground in this case. Even their max rake on a 30-100k pot is a non issue, if the table is loose enough to get there.
They also have valet and arrange shuttle service for groups of a few players or more.
Timex has a review on his Cardrunners blog, worth checking out.
On one last note, in my opinion, online rooms also seem to have an easier time taking on sats for clubs, with provinicial gaming ad regs some what more relaxed or indifferent
Might as well show people reading the thread what they get for their buck:
