Scariest movies for the season!

So, I think there was a thread about this last year, but I'll be damned if I can find it (and yes I did look).

Looking for some input on scary movies people have seen that gf and I can watch before my favourite day of celebratory evil of the year... Halloween.

Checked IMDB's list and we've both seen them all or most of them at least a few times. (we're big horror fans, but there's gotta be some we've missed.)

Ideas please...

Hate theaters. Always some idiot yapping away or answering a cel. Challenges the strength of my meddies that control my rage outbursts.

On top of that, the local theater here in town only runs during the summer. That's life in small town Ontario. Closest theater is far enough away it makes me go 'meh' to the idea of driving that far.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand to cap it off, most new 'in theater' movies are garbage these days especially horror.

Watched one of the SAW movies with her. Can't remember which one it was. Didn't really appreciate it as much as I thought it would. Seemed more of a how many ways can we rip a human body apart with various metal implements. No story whatsoever. I like Gore, just not bulk gore with nothing else mentally intriguing.

I really should look up some of the Italian horror genre movies. They've been known to have some of the best horror flicks of all time.
  • Send a PM to Drtyore. He's a horror guru.
  • Well, this is the third time I've been asked this week!

But, the best I can recommend:

"The Orphanage" - a spanish horror flick, great for a mind fuck

"Let the Right One In" - Swedish vampire movie recently re-made into "Let me in", but I'm sure not nearly as good.

If you're into the torture-porn kinda flicks, "The Human Centipede" is.... a movie

But for pure gore-fun!? "Dod Snow" or "Dead Snow" is a Nazi-zombie romp that is delightful!

Zombieland was entertaining, but not a horror flick.

  • Anything with zombies . . . or Woody Harrelson, is a horror show. :D

    False

Trust me... I'm an expert :)

  • I watched Lesbian Vampire Killers the other day. Awesome fun flick. Not a horror though.
  • Not a new flick, but I have always loved The Changeling, with George C. Scott.

This was a good movie! I've probably watched it like 4x now.

If you want classic / you should have seen these flicks the standards (and some not so standards)

    Evil Dead 2
Friday the 13th part 1 (it is better than you remember it)
The Ring (I've heard Ringu - the japanese original - is better, but can't vouch)
    Candyman
    Poltergeist*

    * I keep meaning to watch this again myself - it really is amazing

OMG I thought I was the only one.

I liked Last House on the Left, original and remake, although I have a huge crush on Monica Potter.
  • IMO Slasher movies have flooded the market. Just too freaking many of them. Same old story. Psycotic Killer chases victims through a bush lol
Philly mentioned Paranormal Activity 2. This one will probably scare the crappola out of me by the looks of it. Never even knew there was a first one out.

    Poltergiest all good.
Haven't seen a GOOD VAMPIRE movie in a long time.
Dracula with OLDMAN and Hopkins is good but not Scary. More of a Vampire love story.
Dracula 2000 was another good one.
Omen series another classic. and the Changeling .

Props for Dracula 2000 - better than it deserves to be, and actually has an EXCELLENT take on the vampire mythos.

    And they don't sparkle

  • "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants"

Every time my wife and daughter watch it, it scares the bejesus out of me
    :-\:-\:-\:-\
  • That you even acknowledge the existence of that film diminishes you in my eyes . . . good day.

  • Great ideas guys!

Just got the original Hellraiser all ready to go! It was great the first time I saw it years ago. The second one was good too, but then it went straight down the old hell hole.

Should give the original Friday the 13th a shot again. Jason has always been my hero in a strange sort of way.

Will check out some of the other suggestions for sure. The Orphanage sounds interesting.

Seen a few of those mentioned way too many times.

Watched The Exorcist 3 on acid when I was younger. That could be interesting to revisit! Hopefully no flashbacks happen! The first one I can practically recite the script from memory because it was simply awesome. The second one sucks which was really disappointing.
  • Check out Session 9. Awesome psychological horror, not a slasher flick, about a Hazardous Materials crew hired to remove asbestos from a now closed Insane Asylum. Actually filmed at a creepy looking closed down insane asylum.

  • Watched the original Hellraiser last night. Haven't had a ton of time to watch the horror flicks this week which is a real disappointment.

Tonight, going for Hellraiser II as this may be all we have time for tonight.

Will check out others mentioned throughout the week, although from the weather outside the xmas movies might be on tap soon!

That's the one. I think you'd like it.

I assume you enjoyed The Walking Dead as much as I did Sunday evening?

There's a replay this Friday on AMC for anyone who missed it.

This movie scares the crap out of me. Just sayin'.
  • Just bumping..

I recently re-watched "Repo: The Genetic Opera"... it's not a horror flick per se, but it's really quite good on repeated watchings.

  • Bumpo due to getting at least remotely close to the horror season, and I haven't watched a good horror flick in a long time..

    I know, I know it's over a month away!

Anyone have any opinions as to whether anything of any quality came out since this thread was last addressed?
  • This thread is so old that Hvee posted here.

    Now that's scary.
  • the strangers is a good one. my gf won't ever watch it again because she's too scared.

    Now that's scary.

While searching for this one and the even older one, I found a bunch of threads he'd posted in. Why the hell did he insist on using such a weird font in 20point text? Good riddance.

I know for a fact that we had two threads about this subject with the other one being far superior as we had a really good list going. It's gone though from the looks of things.
  • You want scary AND poker? try watching Jamie Gold or Jerry Yang win the Main Event.

Nonononono . . . it's not gone . . . it's just downstairs, in a cupboard next to the furnace. Take a flashlight . . . for some reason, the lights don't work down there, and it's very dark . . . with cobwebs . . . and possibly chainsaw weilding mass murdering psychopaths.
  • Heard good thing about Martyrs. It's in French though so if you don't like subtitles, this may not be for you.
