3 betting in MTT/SNG

To keep it short, what spots should I be looking for to 3bet in MTT and SNG type games.. I don't think that I do it near enough and would like to start adding the 3bet to my arsenal more. Interestingly enough, I do it a lot in ring game but I haven't seemed to find the right spots to do it when I play SNG/MTT.

Same goes for 4 betting

  • |Same with me, don't think I am 3 betting enough, what levels are you talking about?

Last year at about this time when I went on a rampage(good results) I was 4 betting 10's like crazy, but that was against the right opponents mind you.:)
  • It's all about note taking and their stats. If a villain is raising 30-40% of their hands, their is no way they have it all the time. Look for cut-off or button raises, especially if they do it all the time.

You don't want to do this too often, or they will pick up on it and start to four bet you light.
  • I tend to 3bet more w 18-25BB vs a stack the same size late in a tournament but is player dependent (e.g I don't 3bet too light vs some guy running 15/8)
  • Impossible thread to comment on.

You mentioned you find spots in cash games. I assume you do this because you recognize tendencies and betting patterns.

MTT are absolutely no different. Pick the same spots and go.

The only factor to consider is villain stack size. Obv ur not 3 betting a 10bb stack whos just committed 2.5. Play your deepstack game the same as ring.

i came to the same conclusion when i tried to comment. Basically, when you have a hand that is stronger than the first raisers hand or his hand range you should likely 3bet. But because there are so many factors its prob better to look at other fundamentals.

just make sure your percentage is not out of line.....

mines 6% after 200 hands in a 180 man.....don't know what that means though
  • Not really sure what the amount should have been here.

Given stacks anything is fine, you're commiting his stack even if you click it back basically. Deeper stacks usually means a bit bigger bets

    It's a stt not a mtt :)

I pretty much pushed anyway as you can see.;)

I meant cause it was the 2 shortest stacks was it a good spot? (trying to help the o.p. here peeps, work with me!)
  • ah. Yeah stt changes things a bit. But still, here I'm looking at AQ and 2 shorties are shipping. If I win, I'll put me into first place, and it'll burst the bubble. I'm willing to try.

ya, there you go above. If you only wanted mtt (which we were trying to incorporate the hands into mtt situations) then don't fucking ask for stt's as well then.

Don't think I ever once mentioned an STT, no need to get offended I just was agreeing with people that it seemed like your examples were missing the point of this thread.

Thanks a lot Wetts, those were exactly what I was looking for.. is there a % I should be trying to hover around for 3 bet % that is a good frequency or do you just feel it out at the table you're at?

Basically what I'm gathering here (is pretty obvious I guess) is that it is almost totally reliant on the player you're 3betting and their opening range/raise frequency, not that there is necessary spots/hands you should 3bet.

    Same goes for 4 betting

    hmmmmmmmmm.

But you voted me as one of your fav's so all is forgiven.:)
