50 - 100
75 - 150
100 - 200 - 25ante
150 - 300 - 25ante
200 - 400 - 50ante
300 - 600 - 75ante
400 - 800 - 100ante
600 - 1200 - 100ante
800 - 1600 - 200ante

Example 2;
Starting Stack 4500
Blind Levels 30mins

25 - 50
50 - 100
75 - 150
100 - 200
100 - 200; 25ante
150 - 300; 25ante
200 - 400; 50ante
300 - 600; 75ante
400 - 800; 100ante

Example 1 commits the cardinal sin of the cost per round more than doubling, i.e., 144% from 225 to 550. Even without calculating the Patience Factor, Utility Factor, Rank, etc., I would not want to play in such a tournament.
  • From the assumptions and analysis below I thing that the 2nd structure has the most playability.

Assuming 50 players in each and losing 20 players in first 2 ½ hrs and 35 players by hr 4.

    Eg 1

1/ Total chips in play are 325000.
2/ At the end of 6 levels (2 ½ hrs), going into lvl 7 avg chip stack will be
    10830 with an avg M of 6.6
3/ Have way through lvl 10 (4 hrs), during lvl 10, avg chip stack will be
    21670 with an avg M of 4.9

    Eg 2

1/ Total chips in play are 225000.
2/ At the end of 5 levels (2 ½ hrs), going into lvl 6 avg chip stack will be
    7500 with an avg M of 10.7
3/ At the end of 8 levels (4 hrs), going into lvl 9 avg chip stack will be
    15000 with an avg M of 6.8
  • However "better" may be different for different people. Some like to not spend all day and have fast stuctures. I prefer long structures however will play both if players are bad enough.
  • I always smile politely when dealing a final table and players complain that the blinds are no good. Players have the most to do with how the blind structures play out. If everyone plays TA at the beginning and all the pots are small the blind will catch up with them.
"If the cards don't get to them the blinds will."

I have had final tables after 7 hours of play with 10 players complain that the binds are killing them because the table average is now at 6 BB. Tournaments must be designed to end. That is why they were introduced to the WSOP back in its beginning.
