Vegas Vacation

There has probably been 300 threads regarding this topic, but I will make my own. I am planning to goto Vegas with some friends this year (either January or a bit later ) but being 22, I have not been there before. Was wondering if any of you can give any advice on going there.

Cheapest place to find flights from Canada (Live in Saskatchewan)

Best place to stay (preferably somewhere cheap and central)

Best card rooms to goto..

I have also read you guys talking about rewards programs from different casinos and getting comped for stays.. Was wondering how this works with most places and how hard it is to actually earn free nights (most likely towards another trip).

Seems like it might be hard to earn many ''points'' towards getting comped food or time stayed while playing poker.

  • Nope, I think it is easy to get comped for food and nights, they are all still hurting down there and they are still begging my folks with offers every day.

I don't know what the system and how many points or whatever you need but by the looks of it not much, lol
  • I'm not a 'cheapo' but I would suggest Planet Hollywood for best value for your buck. Its usually $59/night during the week (prices are a lot higher on weekends at most hotels - sometimes double). If you share the room, $30 is pretty decent. Great rooms, really great casino and poker room (mainly in the evening). The restaurants on site are reasonably priced and its dead centre on the strip. I like the fact that you can get out of the casino very quick, unlike other hotels like MGM where it takes a 15 minute walk from the hotel room. Buffet is pretty good and they usually give you a few 2 for 1 coupons in your room.

Poker rooms - MGM, Venetian, PH are my picks if you are mainly playing 1/2. The room at Aria looked very nice but I never played there last trip. Most poker rooms comp $1-$2 hr.
  • Anybody else open this thread hoping to see a clip with Randy Quaid in it?

    yes
  • I suggest you read the other Vegas threads. There's a ton of great info there.

We stayed at the Flamingo for $50/wn. That being said, you won't find a better deal than Imperial Palace for a hotel. It's a total dive but it is very cheap and centrally located.

Also www.allvegaspoker.com is a great source of info about the different rooms both on and off the strip.
  • All Harrahs properties comp you $1/hr in the poker room plus you earn regular tier points, which can also be cashed in. If you plan on going at least once a year, then it is worth it. Otherwise ignore all comps discussion.

MGM is annoying because even though you use one card at all properties, the comps earned are per property only. Harrahs is nice because all the comps are pooled and can be used for anything. We used our comps on checkout to help pay for the room. The higher your tier score the better the deal you will receive the next visit at a Harrahs property.

To find hotel rooms the best thing to do is go to harrahs.com and click on hot deals link at the top. After going to Vegas once, you will have a Total Rewards card and the deals will be better if you log in using your card first. I just received an offer code in the mail so try LVDMS8. Don't know what kind of rates that will get you though. You can also call 800-451-3589

Thanks so much. Sorry to sound like a newb but you say all locations comps are pooled, how many Harrahs properties are on the strip? On that total rewards card site on the pic of the card there is a logo for caesars, harrahs, etc. do they track how much you spend at other casinos too?
  • All the comps are pooled between OSheas, IP, Harrahs, Flamingo, Ballys, Paris (no poker), PH, Caesars and Rio. Also Bills but they are on a separate system and you have to ask them to manually transfer the comps and min $10 a time.

Also there is the $39.99 Buffet of Buffets which is a 24hr pass to the buffets at Caesars, Paris, PH, IP, Flamingo, Rio and Harrahs. Recommend Flamingo for breakfast.

Harrahs comps are the best because they accumulate automatically on your card, there is no asking a pit boss for a food comp etc, you just swipe it whenever you are spending money at a Harrahs casino and they will take whatever you have earned off your card. So for example you could play for several days and then buy your Buffet of Buffets pass and use up whatever comps you have or like I said before you could use them to help pay for your room when you check out or pay for a show or whatever.

MGM is Mirage, Bellagio, Aria, Monte Carlo and MGM Grand but although it is one card, comps are not pooled and can only be spent at the casino they are earned.

I have stayed at a few different hotels and so far PH comes to a tie with MGM and the only reason I love MGM is the pool(the walk sucks lol). Anyways definitely a +1 on PH!
  • At a buck an hour though, isn't it a little tough to earn any sort of value in a given trip?

How are tier points different than comp points? -edit...and how are they earned ?
  • Tier points are how they rank you. You earn tier points for everything you do at a Harrah's casino, including buying shows etc. Only poker players are comped $1/hr. My wife and I earned about $60 worth of comps+tier points over the week. Tier points are cashable at about 100 points to the $1. The real value in the tier points is the reduced hotel rates on your next trip.
  • Ty Moose. So..if a person is just going down to play cards, no shows or the like..what is the best course of action/group/casino to be dealing with for comp/tier points?
  • If you are playing tournies it doesn't matter as earning comps during tourneys is pretty rare. If you are 100% sure you only want to plunk your ass at one casino and play there all day it doesn't matter as you are going to accumulate enough comps to get a free buffet or something by the end of the trip. If you want to tour around and play as many casinos as you can it doesn't matter because you won't accumulate significant comps at any one casino.

If playing the majority of your time at Caesar's, Rio, PH, Harrahs, IP, Flamingo, Bally's, OSheas is enough for you then stay at a Harrahs hotel and make sure you swipe in every time you play. If staying at those hotels appeals to you and you plan to go at least once per year then it really doesn't take much play to get reduced/free rooms. Play a little more/visit more often and you start getting free shows/food on top. If you have a slot playing girlfriend then she will rack up far more points/offers than you ever would.

Note: your tier points will expire if you don't visit at least every 6 months.
  • Ty again...and umm...sorry about the thread hijack..lol. But I have been meaning to ask about this stuff. I am looking at starting to go down once every couple months in the New Year..

Sounds like the harrahs group is the way to go..at least you can get some different scenery...and yeah, likely just sitting at the cash tables for the most part.

Note to self: give the girl 100 bucks to go play penny slots...lol edit-oh..wait...she isn't coming with...hmm

  • must be nice to have all these offers TP.
  • You sir are 100% wrong....... I only gamble at Mirage .... see below offers off my playersclub.com card which is for all MGM properties.

Fail. I was discussing comps. Please try spending your Mirage comps at Monte Carlo.
  • lol @ thinking moose is ever wrong when it comes to Vegas!
  • FAIL ... how so ???

I only gamble at Mirage. Why are they giving me comps at all the other properties if I have never gambled there ?

It's ok to be wrong once in a while Mr Moose.
  • Dude seriously I am not talking about shit they offer you. I am talking about the $1/hr in comps that you earn while playing. Harrahs properties pool that money. MGM properties do not. It is very nice that they are offering you free rooms. That has nothing to do with this discussion. I also already stated that if you are going to plunk your ass in one room and play there all the time it doesn't matter where you play. So congrats to you.
  • Best of luck to you sir, You sound like a real WINNER !

    bye bye :D
  • One more question for you Moose, if I go with 3-4 guys and we all play like...50hrs of poker over the course of 5 days.. can we combine our $50.00 each to put $250.00 towards our room ?
  • I'm pretty sure you can. My wife and I have combined our cards so I don't see why not.
