ill tell josh_fp to post the details , him and a co-worker built a table for our place and its real nice (wooden rail for now) but apparently it was like 200-250 in supplys but it turned out really nice
mine cost about 200-250 also,I found my plans at homepokertorney.com
they have about 12 different plans.
My home game has never been better i would highly recommened building a table if you can it is definitly worth it.
my only suggestion is that unless your willing to spend 200 on pool table felt use butter suede for the playing surface,it looks good,it wont pill, its durable, but the cards dont slide that well until you break it in but at $15 its a way better deal for your money.
I built one for my house, still need to get some good felt online.. the green stuff I have on in this pic has been replaced with some vinyl like stuf that works pretty good for now.. the cards slide well on it
I built mine about a year ago(96"x42"oval) and I found that the hardest part was finding all the components , I finally went with billiard cloth ( $100 from local billiard shop) , folding legs (home depot) , edge trim (aluminum lino edging from home depot) and a padded rail (camping bedroll from wal-mart , and vinyl cover (fabric store). After the fact I finally found cup holders (RV supply) and I retro-fitted them into the rail. The things I would do differently are , use plywood instead of particle board and try to find a denser/thinner foam for the table top( I used 1/4" white foam from fabric store ) . I can sit 10 people comfortably and don't have to worry about spilled drinks and well the cards sliding well. The biggest head-ache was finding everything locally (Calgary) instead of paying an arm and leg by shipping everything up from the states , putting it all together was'nt too hard, I'm sure when you are done , you will wonder how you ever lived without it.
I built 1 about 8 years ago and it still is holding up. Like someone said before use plywood, I used 3/4" thick. If you are using it for home games only you should consider making it an octagon. Usually in a home game everyone deals and it is hard to see the cards on the other side of the table when it is a hold em table.
Later
Built this one over X-mas.
No good 'table' shots, but you get the idea.
I would take one but my wife is out of town with the digital camera.
I used the plans from http://junell.smugmug.com/gallery/215897 as well!

I don't have any pics of my table on a website yet but if you email me, I'll send you some pics of the finished product

I took my kitchen table - ordered the sponge and felt from a poker website, and made the rail with vinyl. All you need is a powerful staple gun.
Here is a shot of our championship event - with trophy:
Nice trophy as well.
