Live games

Hi. With the pending opening of the poker room at the Fallsview casino on Jan 10th I'm getting myself ready for the live action. During the past few months I have been playing the table games there to get myself used to the action and to get any nervousnes out of my system. I've also played at Casino Rama a few times and so this wont be my first time at a real table. What do you recommend I do to get ready mentaly and what do I need to concentrate on to get my game adjusted for live action vs the online game. I figured if I wore a clown suit people couldnt get past it to see my tells but I dont think the security there would appreaciate that too much.
Also what are the bankroll suggestions for playing 2/4 and 3/6 limit tables?
Any other suggestions on book, articles etc are very welcomed.

cheers

Interesting idea. Probably the only table game that will give you some prep for poker is blackjack since it will occasionally feature someone chastising you: "If you hadn't have hit your sixteen the dealer would have busted. What are you stupid?" My response, by the way, is: "Gosh. I'm sorry. Of course, if you had not have split your aces nine hands ago it would be different too. So, I am no more stupid that you."

Relax. The fact that you are posting this question means you are probably one of the better players in the game. At the limits you have chosen there will be very few players making a legitimate effort to be good at the game and even fewer who are actually succeeding.

Don't worry about tells. NOBODY in 2-4 and 3-6 games is looking for them and if they are they don't know what they are seeing (OK... a slight exageration, but you need not worry about it).

Focus on the basics: starting hands and pot odds. Don't worry too much about "the other guys." Take care of your own game and you will soon discover that you are not nervous.

$1000. But, if you have a job don't worry at this point. As Mike Caro points out, if you have the ability to replenish your BR from other sources then you can take some risks. Since the amount of risk at these limits is fairly small... take a shot.

Books? Hmm... "Winning at Poker" Dave Scharf is excellent for low-limit play (available at amazon.ca). So is Lou Kreiger "Beginner to Winner" and Lee Jones "Winning low-limit hold'em."

There is a game at Casino Niagara called Niagara Hold'em which combines Let it ride and Hold'em. Every player places 4 bets down and is dealt 2 hole cards and the dealer places 5 community cards face down in front of him. Before you look at your cards the first bet is collected and the dealer flips over the FLOP. At this point you get a look at 5 cards and decide if you want to play or not. you have an option to check or fold, if you check your 2nd bet is put into the pot and the dealer flips over the turn card. If you decide to fold at this point your last 2 bets are given back to you, if however you decide to play your 3rd bet goes into the pot and the river card is flipped over. If you think you have a winning hand you check your last bet into the pot and go to the showdown. Best hand wins. House takes a rake from the first round of bets which are mandatory. in a 5/10 game pots are normaly around 125 to 150. bets go $5,$5,$10,$10. First bet being $5. I've been playing this to get used to the table and to build my bankroll. This game is easy to win if you have discipline. FOr $5 you get to see 5 cards which is enough to determine if your hand is worth going all the way.

Thanks for the advice Dave, I will be heading to Chapters to pick up the books you mentioned.

  • Ahhh, a clown suit to hide your physical tells - when you told me about the idea I was wondering what REALLY was behind it....... now I know

From when I have watched you play online Red and what we have talked about throughout our discussions, I am sure you will do fine at the limits you spoke of. You won't need you worry about your tells - your game will speak for itself, in a positive way.

For a book, I recently 'picked up' Phil Hellmuth Jr.'s "Play Poker Like the Pro's" and it has helped bridge some thoughts I have had into actual strategies and concepts.

See you all in the Falls!
