poker table felt?

is there a material for poker table surfaces that will work just as well as real poker speed cloth or poker felt would but for less money and more readily available at fabric stores?

  • just found this list at homepokertourney.com. Sounds like velveteen might worth a shot.

Auto Headliner: Okay, but there are better alternatives.
Faux Suede: Okay but the cards do not slide well.
Felt, Billiard: Good. It is durable and the cards slide well but it is a bit rough and may lint a bit.
Felt, Fabric: Bad! Fabric store felt will ball-up and shed lint. It will be horrible after only a couple hours.
Micro suede: Okay but the cards do not slide well.
Moleskin: Good and inexpensive. $7 per yard at Jo-Ann’s and $4 per yard at Wal-Mart.
Poker Cloth: Good. This is the most common poker table playing surface. $15-$20 per yard.
Speed Cloth: Good. Similar to poker cloth but a bit more slippery.
Suited Poker Cloth: Excellent! This is probably the best poker table playing surface. $20 per yard.
Velvet: Okay. The cards slide well but it is not durable.
Velveteen: Good and inexpensive. $10 per yard at Jo-Ann's and $4.50 per yard at Wal-Mart.

Maybe the velveteen. It's relatively cheap and not going to give you a big hassle. You don't have to go to far to get it.
  • I used velveteen. It's great for cards, but be careful of spills - they can harden up if not taken care immediately (completely dried up, overkill on paper towels). Leaves a scratchy feel once it dries if not done right.
  • Personally, I think you should spend the extra money and get speed cloth. And make sure you have some Sham-Wow's on hand for those spills.
  • I've clothed 2 heads up tables. The first with plain felt. Not good at all! Avoid.
The second with velveteen and I'm not completely satisfied with that either. It feels nice and soft but I can't see it lasting. Long.
Think I will heed STR82ACE's advice and go with proper cloth.

AJ- what kind of material is your main green table?
  • Speed Cloth is by far the best. Even some casino poker rooms that I have played in use speed cloth

More should agree with you...especially the Boss...alas, doesn't happen often

Can't remember, but I can tell you it isn't speed cloth. If I have to do it over again, it will be though. Actually, it was the wife that selected that material after I told her what it was I wanted it for, and because speed cloth was not available, told her to find something close.
  • Yeah, you are spending the time to build the table...get speed cloth. The price isn't that big of a difference for the amount you are using. You will regret it otherwise.
  • i've built 2 tables and used velveteen for both and i like it. cards play well, feels nice and lasts fine for me. also costs way less than speed cloth. trying to get speed cloth in canada for a decent price is pretty tough

I LOVE the feel of velveteen too. I prefer a soft surface as opposed the to speed cloth that is on my regular table now. What do casinos use for the playing surface? I've played at Casino Niagara and the felt is soft there.

Remember that fake grass your parents had on the back patio lol
Just joking. Thinking about 2 tables will probably go with ones like Wetts got. As for the felt, You can try the billiard felt. I am sure fabric land stocks it. Holds up great a buddy of mine has had his pool table for 20 yrs, played a lot of pool on that table and the felt is still like new.
  • I have built 8 tables and the type of material you use is just a person preference. I have used everything from speedcloth(my fav) rayon ,polyester, velveteen( also like it not as much as speedcloth)
  • i used speed cloth and ordered it from down south i believe i paid 50 cdn shipped i would not use anything else
