New to poker, love it and have a few questions

Hello there I play poker casually with friends and sometimes online, but watch the pros on tv almost constantly full tilt, million dollar, wsop etc. I just had a question thats been bothering me for a very long time about the poker we watch on tv.

See when me and my friends play we either verbally "announce" the bet we're putting in or its such an easy to see neatly stack of chips that everyone can easily count so there is never any confusion.

Now when I watch it on tv however guys are just throwin huge obscure amounts into the pot, and a lot of the times they don't say anything, yet somehow their opponents just always automatically know exactly how much to call instantly its so weird... Does the dealer tell everyone how much they are required to be calling and we just don't hear it or is their some other method to this madness.

Sorry this isn't really a question about poker strategy I'm just so dam confused about it.

Any answers or attempts to clear up this question would be much appreciated, cheers.

  • tldr....

    the answers are:

1)you can say raise to 20 (total), or raise 15 to 20....

    2)no they're not rigged.

    3) muck preflop.
  • if you dont know the answer or if you think its too long to read then just don't bother answering at all its as simple as that...

Its Tv. The part where their figuring out the bet amounts gets edited out.

nope, its not that simple.....first of all if i don't know the answer then i have to come up with something witty. then i gotta think 'what if everyone makes fun of me'. then i gotta go back and read the post. sometimes i check to make sure i make senses. finally i wait till wetts gives the correct response then i edit my answers to suit his.
  • hmmm thanks for the response wetts I guess that's the only explanation...
  • THey are also pros. Anyone who has played enough live poker knows what a stack of 20 looks/feels like, same with a stack of 5/10. They just some simple addition in a few seconds if they know whats going on.
  • dealer usually would count the bet for the other players in the hand.
  • true. You may have noticed that the dealers don't have mic's so they could announce it and you'd have no idea.

You can't hear it over Jessie May's constant school girl giggling along with Roy The Boy Brimley. lol

Dealers are required to count and announce the bets.

This doesn't make it to TV where they show the clips.

Good players can tell how much a stack is.
