$55 mtt 99 facing river bet, are we ever good here?

Villain is new to table but 50/25 over 5 hands

Also, does checking this turn kinda confuse things as well? I think, a lot of donks auto-assume that we don't have a hand when we check the turn, so they'll bet the river with missed fds or other random hands like worse pairs pretty much just bc they're bad.
But in general, is this spot just too thin to even debate calling (i.e. it's a soft tourney, should I just be folding here and waiting for more +ev spots?)?

  • I think your good here enough times to justify a call. From his view, it looks like AK. A turn bet wins the pot more often than not, I think.
  • I'd probably feel like I had to call that. When we check the turn for pot control we allow guys with big egos to stab at it. Maybe if I had a read on the guy or was left really short if I was wrong I'd consider folding
  • As played, I think your good enough times to justify the call.

However, I have to ask why raise preflop? Its early enough, why not limp behind the limper and set mine? There really are not many flops you like to see here (this being one of the few), and there is not enough in the pot to try to steal preflop imo. Early on, I think I just call to set mine and avoid the big pot.
  • He knows what you have, he can see your cards. Fold.

But seriously (besides shaking my head at the players still there..),I think you are plenty good here enough times this early in the tourney to call...

when checking likely induces a bluff you can call. woulda been nice to price villain of the flush draw though, although its a good bluff card.

edit: not sure why i quoted this.
  • Some reads would be nice if you have any, but I think readless you can call and feel fine about how you played the hand. Fold club and spade rivers if it runs out that way and has the same action, call all other, maybe raise T and 9 rivers.

^^Shouldn't affect your decision at all.
