Speaker Wire / HDMI

Wow, it seems like a long time.....

We've moved to Kitchener and now designing the man cave. Anyone have any suggestions on where i can get some decent HDMI cables for a good price? Installing the 52" TV off a receiver with blu ray and express vu.

Also, i'm wiring the 5.1 surround sound and since in wall, most sites say i need CL2 or CL3 speaker wire a) better quality b) to keep house insurance since it's fire rated?. Anything in town/close to pick up at a good price? probably 12 or 14 gauge? Need 100ft or so..

Let me know if you have any thoughts..
thanks

  • monoprice.com if you have the time to wait for delivery which isn't that long.

It's Moose approved and the best prices on cabling you'll ever find. Given the types of cables and the amount you're ordering the shipping costs wouldn't be that bad. Best prices on HDMI I've ever seen.
  • i will post some pics this week. basically studs and electrical done now. when all said and done, poker room, bar and TV/gas fireplace combo.. i'm excited.

I'm technologically stupid, so maybe moose/hobbes or someone can help me here. My audio guy is trying to get me to buy the best of the best but i wonder if really needed. here's what i'm thinking, tell me if i'm totally lost my mind :)

    Here's what i think i need.

1 HDMI cable from receiver to 52" plasma
1 HDMI from express vu to receiver
1 HDMI from blu ray to receiver
(all HDMI what kinds do i need? the one to the TV is about a 10 ft run and rest will be 1-3 ft since putting all equipment behind wall using a universal remote)

There's a fibre optic hole in the back of the Pioneer receiver? Do i need to run anything to or from the receiver on this??

I want to hook up my WII too? what do i need for this?

Lastly, i will be running individual CL2 or CL3 speaker wire to each speaker, that i can do. But for subwoofer, they say i need a coax cable? Is that the same as the black cable express vu uses for example? Anything else i need to run to my sub woofer?

I am buying a universal remote? Logitech or Universal? how big do i need for what i want?

lastly, if down the road i want to run a keyboard/ CPU on the plasma, i don't have the faintest clue how to do that? is that do-able from the receiver or am in a totally different ball game?

Sorry for a bunch of questions, but, i'm more handy than techy!
Any help would be appreciated. I may be looking to pay someone set this all up unless i can figure it out. local audio stores want $60/hr which seems a little steep..

    thoughts....
  • Oh boy, I will probably confuse you trying to explain it all,lol but I hate hdmi video for t.v., this might just be me, but I am having issues with it, hdmi sound is great.

If I was not so far away I would come over and help(or blow something up :P)

So you got a separate receiver if i read that right, correct?

Oh ya, try to get long enough cables for everything, 1-3 feet I really don't like as you may want to change your room around 1 day or may not even be long enough for the current set up you have
  • Thanks
the TV i have is the panasonic 50" S2 . link below

    https://panasonic.ca/english/audiovideo/plasma/tcp42_46_50S2.asp

The receiver i picked up at Best Buy for $199.99 this weekend.

Pioneer 5.1 Channel HDMI 3D Home Theatre Receiver (VSX-520-K) - Best Buy Canada

The WII i have, express vu HD PVR will be ordered and the Blu Ray i will purchase later.

just need a heads up on the cables i need cuz i have no idea :(

I plan on running the wires in the week or so. How long for monoprice to ship usually Moose?
  • I am worried you may not have enough inputs and outputs on the t.v., do you know many there are and of which?(i.e. how many hdmi input/output, rca, component etc etc.)

By the way don't mind me rambling, I am very into electronics but still need others experience with regards to blue ray and pvr and such as I don't have much experience with those. :)
  • not a problem. i appreciate any help i can get.
i believe there are 3 HDMI inputs on my TV. but as i understand it, i will really only be using 1 since all others go to receiver and then 1 main one to the TV directly.
I think i need some component cables run for the WII but not sure to be honest. I think there is lots in the TV
  • I have nothing technical to add, I just wanted to say welcome back, Cory!

    Whens the 1st poker game?
  • monoprice takes like 7-10 days. All their cables have big blowup pics of the cable ends so match what you see in the back of your units with the pics. You will generally need male to male but it varies.

If your receiver has hdmi out, ya it will save you a lot of trouble. Buy the cheapest cables you can get (as long as you get in wall rated for that type of installation). There is no such thing as a 'quality' cable. It's all digital so you either get the signal or you don't. There are no losses that you get with the lower quality old analog cables. The fibre optic hole is actually a digital optical sound jack. Since your stereo sounds pretty decent you probably don't need it as most of the newer HDMI cables carry sound too. There is an older type that has a different shaped jack that doesn't carry sound but I doubt you have that. Maybe on your satellite box. As long as all the jacks are the flat type, you should be good.

For your wii you want a component video cable not the crappy a/v cable they give you in the box. Either monoprice or prolly this is cheaper:

DealExtreme: $6.45 Gold Plated Component Video and Audio AV Cable for Wii - White (1.8M Length)

Get a logitech remote COSTCO. This one or there is a model up from that too with a touch screen

    Costco - Logitech® Harmony® 670 Advanced Universal Remote Control

Computer to receiver: depends what inputs/outputs your computer/receiver has. Probably you will have to go direct to tv. If you want it just to play media files on your TV then I strongly recommend a media box.

I have this (except mine is older and doesn't do streaming). It rocks. It even plays blu-ray files. I stupidly bought a bluray player when all I need to do is dl whatever bluray movies I want to watch.

You can find it for maybe $130. Try tigerdirect.ca

WD TV Live HD Media Player ( WDBAAN0000NBK )
  • Also is all this in a wide room with ventilation, as it is 4,000 degrees in my room as I am typing this.
  • moose, if i order speaker wire, hdmi, and some speaker mounts, do you think i will get a large shipping/duty bill? never ordered out of the USA so not sure once it actually gets here, if it's worth all the hassle.

    unreal prices though !
  • It goes usps so it is random if you get hit. Clearance fee is something like $13 and then you pay HST on the value of the goods. monoprice is the bomb. I wouldn't order a cable anywhere else. Ordering online from them and having everything show up at your door is much more convenient than going to Future Shop and having what you want out of stock IMHO. (and paying quadruple the price)
  • oh, so not bad at all then? i'd be lucky to reach $100 in goods... wow, think i might order tomorrow...... sounds promising..

    thanks moose...

i think i can find the WII wire here too..
  • and, do i need a "high speed" hdmi or just a standard one?
  • I doubt you need high speed unless you have some sort of super high end tv.
  • moose, do the wii cables go to the receiver? or do they need to go directly into the TV? if so, i will be short to the TV. need about 20' of run.

DealExtreme: $6.45 Gold Plated Component Video and Audio AV Cable for Wii - White (1.8M Length)
  • I looked at your receiver and it has 2 component inputs. I assume that the signal will then be sent to your tv via the hdmi cable.
  • Sayal Electronics
    1040 Fountain Street

Best place for wires, etc. They barely have shelves, everything is just in cut-open boxes.
  • So i made the plunge today. Made a large order from Monoprice for HDMI cables, speaker wire, TV wall mounts, speaker mounts, WII wireless sensor bars ,etc. All for under $100 + shipping. Would have cost at least $400 around here so we'll see the quality. Based on what i've read, should good i think.
  • just showed up! wow.. an extra $10 to get in 1-3 days. i received in 2. ordered monday afternoon and received wednesday morning.
    only $13.00 import charges

    wow
  • Wonder if Cory has electrocuted himself yet? :)
  • I think he is just tired from watching all the HD porn.
  • a long way from watching anything.. i did run all the speaker wires tonight though... going to look good when all done....
  • bought this t.v. at x-mas no complaints
  • OKAY, I am sooooo close to posting pictures of my finished product. Basement is about 90% complete and i started to hook up the TV and Receiver today. however, i've hit a stumbling block. Please keep in mind i have the speakers wire run but not hooked up to Pioneer receiver yet but still have a problem.....

I have a pre wired HDMI cable that i hooked up to the TV. This cable goes right to the Pioneer receiver. I then hooked up my Bell box (satellite TV) and ran a HDMI cable to the Pioneer receiver. I wanted to make sure everything worked.

Well, i have picture but no AUDIO??? Am i missing something here? and please, please don't say i have to run another wire to the TV as i'm not sure i can fish behind the wall but can try.

ANY advice would be extremely appreciated.

    thanks
  • Cory,

hdmi cable is suppose to be audio and picture. Do you have the mute button on? Trouble shoot like anything else. tv to cable/sat. Make sure it works. Then run to the reciever. I know if you have a blue ray you will need an optical wire. at least i did for Cam's

    Brent
  • checked all the mutes. all off.
but, did notice in my expressvu HD PVR they hooked up a month ago but couldn't use til done doesn't have a smart card in it? channels are coming in and the one i have is a freebie. (have to call them but still, the freebie channel should still have volume)

I have rogers you might have to wait til moose sees this, he has sat. so does Zithal.

    Sorry i can't help

    Brent
  • My hdmi runs to TV only with a separate optical digital sound cable to receiver for audio so can't help you. It has to be either on the expressvu box setup for sound output or the receiver setup for sound input.
