Doyle Brunsons Super Systems

Too anyone who has read this book, I need some help. My book store finally has about three copies of it. I was thinking about buying it this afternoon to have some reading material over the holidays, material that might perhaps improve my game. So the question is this. Too anyone out there who has read this book, is it worth the $50 for buying? Do you believe that there is material in the book that will improve ones game? Looking forward to all your responses.

  • ScottyZ would say no. I haven't read it myself.

From what I understand, if you feel you need to add more aggression to your game, this is the book for you.

  • Yeah I have heard that it isnt very helpfull, other than it telling you to be

    "agressive, agressive, agressive"

still thinking about buying it... there should be some good stories in there!
  • I have not read any of supersystems, but have a few friends who have and they liked it.

Something to consider is supersystems 2 will be comming out soon, so it may not be worth the money to buy suspersystems.
  • If you are considering the original Super System book, don't bother. It is terribly out of date. Super System II is out in a month or two, or you can get it right now if you play on Doyle's site. It is completely updated and has a section written by our buddy, Danny. I'm definitely going to be ordering this from amazon.ca when it comes out.

Just for the record, people have been saying that it's coming out in a month or two since the beginning of last year.. The last I ever heard of it was that it's only available if you play via doyle poker room and wont be available in stores...

As for SS.. It was a revolutionary book when it was written. Its become the base that ever other poker book extends from. Now, what that means is that the concepts covered in SS have been updated/refined by other books since it's printing.

If you want to learn how to play 2-7 lowball, its your book. If you want to read what poker was like back in the 20's, its your book. If you want to read it and go destory LL HE, pass on it. Get Millers SSH instead.

I think it's a definate 'Go to chapters, sit in a chair , read it and put it back on the shelf" book.

edit: OK well fine, the books out there.. OOPS
  • Buy it online, its only about $33 at chapters last time i checked. I liked this book, but it was my first one. At least it has limit AND NL in it, and of course many other poker games.
  • super system is the only poker book ive ever read.
It was a good thing to read before I got started seriously, but only found a few sections helpful. Less than half the book is on holdem poker, which I play almost exclusivley.
I also like having all the probabilities at my side so i can calculate pot odds while playing online - this is included with the book, but I sure its also available on the net somewhere.

It's nice to see that my forum spirit lingers even during an extended AFK. :)

I'd say Super System (original flavour) isn't worth getting today. It's simply out of date overall, and the current topics that it does cover aren't very well presented IMO.

Trying to learn about today's poker using SS would probably be akin to trying to develop modern internet law using the Tao Te Ching.

That being said, I'm definitely looking forward to (and getting) Super System 2.
... there should be some good stories in there!

If you're looking for some good *stories* about poker, I'd recommend Doyle's other book, "Poker Wisdom of a Champion".

    Merry Xmas!

"The Tao may be known and observed
    without the need of travel;
the way of the heavens might be well seen
    without looking through a window."

  • I've bought two books, Winning LLHE by Lee Jones and SS. LLHE has been the most useful for what I play. Maybe SS is out of date like most people say, but it is one damn entertaining read. Excellent sections by Crazy Mike Caro (Draw) and Chip Reese (7stud). If you want to learn about those and lowball then this is good. Also, how can you not enjoy reading about Doyle's adventures in the old wild west.
This book is a poker classic, good to buy if you are interested in where poker has been. Also, I think there is a lot of good stuff in there if you play B&M. For online probably not.

I would love to watch a live Draw game. It would be interesting after reading Caro's section. Unfortunately I don't live anywhere near a poker room.
  • If you do decide to get it, don't pay $50 for it. You can get it at amazon.ca for $33.
  • I just got SS for Christmas and after reading everything I am thinking about taking it back! Good advice guys.
  • Buy SS. Read it. Enjoy it. In part, it's like owning a fine piece of art. With the digital revolution now upon photography we may one day marvel that anyone ever went into a darkroom to create photos. Nonetheless, I still want an Ansel Adams in my collection.

    Doyle's stories are awesome.

The section on no-limit hold'em (the cadillac of poker) must be fully digested to understand play at the WSOP level. Not the best written or organized, but still the best NL advice I have ever read.

Speaking of which... time to re-read it.
  • I agree with you Dave.

Super/System is the classic book on how to win at poker.

Every serious player should read it even if you have to borrow it from a friend, or library.

Doyle's advice on no-limit holdem is timeless.

I ordered a hard cover copy of Super/System from an online book store ages ago.

With shipping it cost me over $100 CAN, and I don't regret it for a moment.

I bought the paper-back, as a teenager who was fasinated with the high stakes poker players I was reading about in "Gambling Times Magazine" and the WSOP.

    I think I payed $6.99 for it.

Back then it was called 'How I Made A $1,000,000 Playing Poker".

I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on SS II.

Some friends have informed me that Jennifer Harmon's chapter on limit holdem is absolutely awesome.
