Poker Christmas

Me and my g/f just exchanged gifts (we are heading to our respective families now) and I thought you guys would appreciate some of the presents she got me.

Among other things:

KEM cards, 2 decks.
'Poker Wisdom of a Champion' by Doyle Brunson -- A book full of anecdotes from his poker career, which should be interesting.
WPT season one on DVD
'Poker -- Bets, Bluffs and Bad Beats' by A. Alvarez. A classic that I haven't read.
An antique poker chip she found on Ebay, to be used as a card marker. It has an ornate kind of 'A' on both sides--the first letter of my last name.

Buy a poker player a bunch of poker stuff, and he's a happy man.

Merry Christmas,

  • Well, I scored pretty good this holiday as well.

From the wife and daughter, I got a beautiful poker table top as well as a 11.5g chip set. Just goes to show you that when your family thinks you've gone crazy, they are willing to support you in your trip. ;)

Oh, and I got a copy of that book "Winning Holdem Poker for 5 Bucks". I suspected I would get this one in my stocking. OH well, good for a giggle or two I'm sure.

Wishing you all a Great Christmas and all the best in 2005!!!

  • Ahhh the classic dogs playing poker scene. No home should be without one. (unless you're married and/or your wife has taste) lol But I've always liked that pic. :)
  • We had to play limit Christmas this year but I got my KEM cards x2 ! I didn't know they retailed in Toronto but good they do, she found them.
  • My wife and six year old daugther bought me an interesting couple of poker items. I did the obligatory, "wow this is great" and thought, "hmmm....can I return these. I got a book that was printed on very cheap paper and looked like it came from the bargain bin, and the old plastic poker chips.

After reading a few chapters of the book "Poker Nation" by Andy Bellin, I realized it was awesome. I often aspire to be a degenerate gambler and need to live vicariously through others. Andy's just a cool guy with some great stories. What a nice surprise.

What to do with the poker chips. Well, my daughter says, "lets play some poker". Hmmm, "ok". We get my deck from New York New York, and divide the chips in half. I tell her the White is worth 1, Blue 5, and Red 10. The blinds are 1/2 and the game is No Limit. I've played with her before and she grasped a few things, so I was interested to see how much she would "get".

We start out, and she starts to undersand "check, call, and raise". She starts cautiously and bets only 2/4, and interestingly she realizes when she's got a good hand and then starts to toss in the blue chips. Ok, this is cool. But can I get her to fold. Well I raise her and she knows to fold. Then on one hand she can't contain herself. She keeps raising her bet on every street, and I'm on a draw. On the river, she just can't keep still. So, I put her on a big hand. She bets the pot and I fold. She shows me something like 53 and was on a total bluff!!

We play back and forth and she says, lets put all the chips in -- cool. She wins the hand and now has the big stack. She loans me some chips so we can continue. Now, she starts to bully me out of pots!!!!! Woa. The cool thing is that I was forcing her to count out her bets, and snuck some math in there!

So, with some dumb plastic chips I had a great afternoon. My six year old understands how to bully with a big stack, how to bluff (it's not just one bet, but a sequence of bets), and when to fold. Obviously I was helping out, but it was neat to see the wheels turning.

Then I thought, OMG have I just created a potential gambling problem! Well, it's only a problem if you lose, so I just need to hone those skills.

    Cheers

  • Hey All_Aces, sounds like some sweet gifts from your women. I heard you also got your bro, J, some great gifts as well. It was fun playing in the Hamilton Tourny with you. This is your bros roommate, Chris. I didnt get any poker gifts, but some gift certificates and $$ i got may very well go towards a trip to Edmonton for the CPT coming up or Vegas, or if not, just some other goodies.
  • This is awesome. It was said earlier in the thread... we men are definitely easy to buy for. I received a number of other poker gifts yesterday as well, but I won't get into them. Suffice it to say that I have a lot of reading/poker hosting to do. :) If we all pooled all of our gifts we could probably open a decent-sized poker surplus store.

As for those of you who actually played poker yesterday, well, I did too. Me, my bro, my g/f, my mom and my dad played two consecutive tournaments for $20 each, plus $10 rebuys. I won the first one, my g/f won the second. I absolutely crushed my brother when I smooth-called him on every street with quads until he finally moved in on me on the river. My dad crushed me when I had AK vs. his 66 and the flop came A65. I crushed my mom when she flopped a flush and I flopped top two, only to hit a 4-outer for a boat on the river.

Welcome to the forum, Chris! I think using Christmas cash for a CPT event or Vegas is a great idea. I'd also suggest--if you're interested in something a little more local--that you head up to Port Perry to register for a Great Blue Heron tournament. They have a CPT 'major' event coming on March 9th that is not sold out, last I checked, but you have to go there and register in person.

    Cheers,

Excellent post. I, too, played poker with my parents and kids. Of course, my 7-year old daughter ended up winning it all. Not just once but TWICE!

My wife is all paranoid about what my daughter will say when they ask her at school what she did over the holidays. I'm thinking maybe she's just found a way to fund her college education...

You are right about the math. These kids will surprise you with how much they can do when either money or poker chips are involved.

Repeat after me: Poker is a force for good!
  • Got Caro's Book of Tells ...

    and ...

Exchanged gifts with my in-laws on Sunday ... God Bless 'em, they know I like to gamble, and go to the casino, and they know poker is my game ...

I received a book called "How to Win at the Casino" by Belinda Levez ... British book, it appears ... let's just put it this way, it doesn't tell me anything new.

    But, the thought is nice.

  • My Christmas poker story...

Had a boxing day reunion poker game. Long time before I became "serious" about the game or before it was even legal in the local casino, we played in the projection booth of the local art theatre about once a month. I have not played with that group for at least nine years. Everyone went their seperate ways and the theatre was sold. But, we played boxing day. I got us a suite at a local hotel and I could even afford premium beer instead of Boh.

One guy here from Ireland, one from Winnipeg, and one drove in on Boxing day from Calgary just for the game. We wrapped at 5 am.

Years ago when we played I tried to introduce hold'em but we all agreed that it sucked and so we went back to wild card games. This year's game featured... six-card-high-low-take-it-or-leave-it with a pitch, annaconda, fiery cross, high chicago, molotov, and yes... two hands of hold'em all night (I won both hold'ems ... heh). I have not had that much fun playing poker in a LONG time.
  • I got a rechargable shaver and 150$ lol

Not that there's anything wrong with that!! :)

Besides, it gives you some cash for the B & M, and will make you look better than most of the other players. :)

  • Hmmm

My wife treated me well as always.

In the poker department she bought me a subscription to CPP and she also got me Sklansky's Tournament poker for advanced players. The cool thing about that is that I had not mentioned that book to her even though it was the next one on my list to buy.
  • Well as usual i was spoiled...

My wife got me a set of Chips, WPT season 1 on DVD and a set of WPT cards.
I also want to get Super System 2 when it hits the shelves so a $25 chapters Gift card.

    Merry Christmas
    BCC-55
  • Santa brought me..........hold on to your hats, three WSOP satellite entrys ($1000) a pop. I'm not sure what I'll do with the other two?? and a week of one on one training with Howard Lederer.........I don't know why he wants me to train him but it's easy money.
    Wader
  • Ok Ok..........the last post was a bluff. I got pretty much the same as everyone else, but my last post was what I asked Santa for, except the roles where reversed with the Lederer thing.
    Happy New Year All

  • I also scored this Xmas. I got a pack of poker wide sized KEMS, Sklansky's Tournament Poker for Advanced Players, and one of those poker table tops you can put on a normal table which is surprisingly much cooler than I thought it would be (and from my inlaws too!).
