early in deepstack mtt - top set

how do you guys play this? obv i bet about 2/3pot and they all insta mucked. are u guys willing to check? based on passive play so far, i wasnt counting on someone else to bet if i checked. i feel im losing value in these spots, cus i hate giving FDs free cards.

  • with a set of aces on a fairly dray flop (minus FD) i'm definetely willing to give a free card. You kill the deck here and only a lower set or a FD is going to call (if he has a lower set it doesnt matter what you do the money is goign in). I'd check the flop here and bet the turn, hopefully you'll get action. Only thing that would suck is if the turn came something like a 4c, y ou think its a brick until he turns over 2-5. But hey, thats poker.

now if you had JJ on a JT5 board I'd be much mroe inclined to bet the flop. There are a lot of hands that will call you here. Or even 99 on a 932 as you'll get action from over/under pairs.

    This is about right.

    Actually. Its actually right.

Im willing to let them peel here, because basically nothing is paying you.

i figured this much, but i find it so hard to lay it down when the flush comes and i only have top set...obviously we cannot rely on anyone having the case A or a lower set. So betting does not make much sense. I realized it after, so I wanted to see how you guys would play it.

Lets say someone behind bets after we check, are you now willing to raise, or are you calling?

BTW, about three hands later some guy stacked off 100 bbs to me with top pair and 8 kicker to my flopped set of Qs. ez game
  • Yeah, this early, and this few chips, I am plenty ok with giving a card here..as said, nothing is paying us..With a nod from the Gods the 3h peels off on the turn, followed by another heart...
  • i just learned what 'raises 60 to 90' means.
  • Thanks for posting this!, just had this happen to me with a gambler donk, I gobbled up his chips, yum yum!:)
