Scrapping my home phone.....

Since it costs us $70/month and the only calls I get are mostly telemarketers and occasionally from some distant member of the family. All other communications are done via the 'net or cell phones. There is no point in having a land line for the house any more.

My question is it possible to keep our HS Internet service without the land line? We have Bell, so I imagine the phone call to cancel is going to be hell :)

Any thoughts?

    Welcome to the year 2002?

Who pays $70/mo for a landline anymore? Hell, my cell is only $45/mo with unlimited almost everything and 10c/min long distance.
  • Works until your daughter is about 9 years old.
  • The term you want is "dry loop". Should be available, but you might be charged extra for your internet service.

Jokes on you. Teenagers don't use the phone for communication anymore, they use MSN or Skype.

A 'dry loop' is when you only have an internet connection? How can they charge extra for the same serivce?

You might be getting a discount on your internet service since you also have a Bell home line.

You'll learn. GTA will have the last laugh.

I think its a great idea to scrap the home land line. Might look into it myself, but certain unnamed members of the household still would rather have the old crank boxes on the wall then to get with the 2010 programs.

We already get a $5 discount with the Bell bundle. Big deal.

    Naked DSL
    Quoted from their website...
    ******************************************
Note: Naked DSL is only available In Ontario and Quebec and it costs an extra $8 per month.

I think this is about the same as Bell charges for a home dry loop...

Actually here is a link to price a dry loop.. Not sure of its accuracy..

  • After an hour on the phone with Bell, we've not only cancelled the home phone, but downgraded our DSL to 25MBs a month (from 60/mth, we average 7) and they're discounting our satellite dish for a total savings of:

    $95 PER MONTH!

Almost seems to good to be true.

    Also, GOODBYE TELEMARKTERS!
  • Yes please get rid of your home phone. My gf and I have done this since we've moved in and it's saving us a decent chunk of money just using our cell phones.

You can still have internet as well, probably with any company.

Not really, them and or scammers still get a hold of your cell phone number, it may not be as many calls as landline.
  • You may not believe me right now, but one day you will be getting mail electronically as well.

  • Hobbes, you're fantastic :)
  • haha epic picture!
  • On a related note, I finally got around to ditching my cable. I pretty-much d/l everything I enjoy watching and when I did happen to catch a show I liked on tv I could no longer live with the commercials.
  • Still a good move, man yesterday all day phone calls, I would talk my folks into doing the same thing if they did not have quite a few things going on.
  • I was running a residential line with internet/fax/interac/alarm on it, and a business line.

I got a business bundle with telus that reduced my business rate to 65 (from 95) a month plus 39 a month for internet..will still handle my alarm/fax/interac..

So basically the reduction of my business rate, paid for the internet, and I can now get rid of my residential line saving about 100 bucks a month..and have all the same service (or lack of with Telus..lol) with one line..

All that being said....has anyone tried the VOIP setups?

I switched my 2 lines to VOIP with Cogeco cable, bundled with my cable TV and internet and saved a little over $100. a month, primarily because the 2nd line was only $15. and no long distance throughout North America. This was about a year ago and it has been fine, no interruptions/issues of any significance.

Haven't really considered dropping my home line in favour of just cell as yet, primarily because I would only save $15. I don't want to drop or change my business # since it's about 20 years old.
Now if I could switch both of my #'s directly to cell that would be a winner...
  • is VOIP only cable? I don't get cable where I am...

Nope, you can get it with DSL as well depending where you are and providers available.

    See here:
    Will VoIP work with DSL?

    and here:
    VOIP with Vonage Canada

    Yeah, I am now.
  • So sounds like we are selling the house(which will add to my stress factor but happy moving, but that's a new thread;))brought up a thought Johnnie, you may have some trouble with companies as they won't take a cell phone as a number to be reached at, have you had any problems yet?

That's why I dropped the landline. I don't want some companies finding me!
