July 8th Brantford $85 +$15 Tournament

I've signed up for my first Brantford tournament this Thursday. Anyone else going?

I see comments made about its "bad" structure and "loose passive players". Any suggestions on strategy for this particular tournament?

  • hope for good starting hands...dont float calling stations on the flop. they wont know what your representing.and dont even think about 3 betting without being strong..hit your good hands hard...and hope to get paid off

Not much other choice in Ontario casinos I'm afraid. :(
  • Blast em right off the start Comp. Be careful of the bingo players and chasers cause a lot of them play there.
  • Is this a big deal? There are probably 30+ similar buy in games a week here

Not really a big deal. I was just looking for some insight into how the Brantford tournament is. I play cash and haven't played a tournament since I went to Vegas last March. Pickings for lower end buy-in tournaments ($100-$300) in Southern Ontario are slim.

Actually it is a big deal in Ontario. Poker tournaments with actual players other than bingo, chasers and river rats are slim and none.
They play limit poker at Brantford and most chasers and BINGO Players play there. Low buy-in tourneys on the weekends are also hard to come by unless someone takes the time and offers up their home for a night.
I would rather lose to a skilled player than give my money to a River Rat.

You have to play higher buy-ins where they respect your raises.

I don't play any of them, you can gladly take my seats.
  • How come they don't run NL cash games in Brantford? Is it some kind of maximum bet rule that they aren't allowed to break? I know they play Omaha if they get the interest but do they ever play hi/lo?
  • My trip to Brantford started off really well because I won my buy-in for the tournamnet on Caribbean stud prior to the tournament start, therefore making the tournament a freeroll for me....

Brantford had a field of 80 players for their $100 tournament yesterday. Overall, I believe they do a good job of running the tournament. However, there was one situation that came up as a result of dealer error. As my table broke and I made my way over to my new table there was a huge argument going on. At this point the field was down to 30 players or so and a player with QQ pushed all-in to an older Greek guy who called with A-8 off. The dealer some how fumbled around with the burn card and lost track of which one it was. The dealer then had 4 cards in his hand that were face up, 2 of which were aces!

The poker God's at Brantford must have have had it in for the older Greek guy. The ruling came down that all four cards would have to be re-shuffled into the deck and the flop re-flopped. As it turned out, no ace came on the flop, turn, or river. Older Greek guy is run out of the tournament steaming mad, as I would have been, by guy with QQ.

As it turned out, I too was rolled out of the tournament 10 minutes later in 28th when villan hits a flush on the river and kills my flopped Ace. On the flop I had him on a flush draw, but by the river when the flush was made I had talked myself out of that read and had him on a weak Ace. I had almost 13k in chips at the time (top 10 in the tournament) and was covered by villan. Quite the nice blow up!:-[

All in all I had some good hands and made good calls up until my demise. The top 8 places were paid and 1st got almost $2500. The tournament lasted approximately 5 1/2 hours and consisted of a majority of younger 20's and 30's players and older retired players. Staff at the tournament announced that Brantford tournaments are selling out 2-3 days prior to.

After the tournament I made $200 playing 5-10 limit with a mostly older/regular table. As soon as you bust out of the tournament the staff put you at the top of the list for cash games, which I thought was good.
