Building a Table - suggestions?

So I'm really down with throwing $600 on a new poker table, so I thought i'd build one.

Anyone done it? Got any tips?

My basic concept is to get a 4x8 SPF plywood and round the corners. Was planning on finding/buying some fold out legs to screw into it.

I'm a little worried about the stability of having 10 dudes lean on it, and I'm wondering what I shouild do about making a rail/speed felt.

Also cup-holders. I figure I can get some Ikea stainless steel tins and just cut holes around the rail, but if I wanted to make a spill-proof area around it, whats the easiest way? All the manufactured tables have wood, but i'm cheap, and don't really know what to do with the bend.

Think I can get away with vinyl or is it just trash?

Some pics would be awesome thanks!

  • I just got 2 really nice custom tables for 250 each, racetrack with cupholder. Only deal is I have to replace the existing surface with speedcloth.

You can get new tables with speecloth for like 350, and imo you're gonna spend like 200 on supplies building one yourself and it'll likely be shitty (at least that was my theory).

Also, Craigslist and Kijiji ftw. People buy some really nice stuff and sell it dirt cheap barely used.
  • if your time is worth anything then just buy one

I've checked periodically and I haven't found one cheaper in Vancouver for <500. But i'll keep my eye out. Did you buy yours used?

GTA: I hear what you're saying but I enjoy making stuff, and I can customize it to what I want. Building your own shit is uber cool.

New. There are alot of small custom builders out there that can sell with almost no overhead b/c theyre simple home based businesses. The bigger businesses that typically pop up when you google are obviously much more expensive.

This site has everything you need to know about building a table.
  • Just google 'poker table plans' and you'll find tons of plans. I think sawdust101 dot com had some at one point.

I also like making things, but when I realized how much materials I was going to have to buy and how many different ways I could screw everything up at various steps I decided it wasn't worth it.

I used to know a few guys in Vancouver or Richmond that made racetrack type folding tables for around $165. Don't know how they did it. Materials should cost more. I'll see if my buddy out there still has their numbers, but it's been a while.

I second this. Just was at Paul's new warehouse this weekend and picked up a few tables like you are talking about. 10 seats, big stainless cupholders, folding legs, your choice in color of speedcloth, dealer tray or not, and betting line. Very happy with the tables!
  • Thanks guys, this has been very helpful. I may just cave and buy one. thanks for the links all.
  • Beware of those cheap online tables, my buddy bought one and it's a piece of crap! I'm not just saying that because I build them, but I changed the felt on it and actually saw how they are put together and the materials used.
  • if you're more into building a table than buying one for the experience and joy of the build, then google the name scott keen and you'll find a good site with really detailed info about how to build a nice table. i built a really nice table a while ago for $200 and it was better than the $500 stuff out there, so if you're ready to drop $600 then you can get yourself a really fancy table. if you're looking for materials, check out yourautotrim.com for good prices/quality

What are the Legacy folding tables like?

If it is the one I am thinking of, (I went there only for the ones I bought but did snoop a bit) I thought the seams and everything around the fold were pretty decently done and the table was skookum enough for sure. I saw it in black and it definitely looked good.

The new warehouse was in a bit of disarray as he was just moving in and getting it painted so I didn't get to look at everything....next time I am down there I will spend more time for sure though.
