Wow, just wow...the real post...I'm retiring (sort of)

I've made some good money playing poker over the years...nothing huge, just a steady rate of return over the past 6 years or so almost all from playing live cash games. Players are terrible, etc, etc.

I've only played sporadically over the last few months. The pattern goes like this. Play a few live sessions then after the second or third session realize that poker has become a boring grind. The live players are depressing, the casino is depressing, live poker has become extremely boring. Take a couple of weeks off and go back to the poker room with a real desire to play. Love playing for one session then the next day get bored to the point of wondering how I ever really enjoyed sitting at a poker table for sessions of any significant length of time. Take two to three weeks off, rinse, repeat.

Now, I'm still making some money during these sessions but winning a $200 or even a $1000 pot doesn't do anything for me anymore. I just don't feel it anymore. This has been going on for months. Maybe I used to enjoy poker more when I played at the same club with some fun people for years in Toronto, but now it`s just a pure and undeniable grind. I don`t need the money and I don`t enjoy cash games anymore, so I guess I`m done. I`m running pretty well so far this year, but I`m cashing-out by bankroll and looking for something new poker-wise.

Last night I played 6 low limit MTTs online. I hadn`t played an online MTT in 2 years...and it was fun. I took some bad beats in the latter stages of a few of the games, but it didn`t bother me at all. Overall, these were some of the worst players that I have seen in years (this was the wow part of my original post that got deleted somehow) and it was fun playing poker in a different format.

So, needing a new challenge that interests me, I`m going to start at (almost) ground zero and try my hand at online MTTs. I will start with 100bi (say $1500 if you average the rebuys in) for low limit MTTs ($5+R and $11 games) and see how things go -- hopefully getting in at least 100 games a month, 4-8 tabling them when I have time to play.

There is a chance that I will lose my entire 100bi roll, I have no idea what to expect as I have never played many online MTTs.

Initially, I will play exclusively on Stars and add-in FT if things are going well and I can't find enough games on Stars.

To make it fun I will update my losses (and wins?) here after each session.

Any advice for game selection, decent vids to watch, etc will be appreciated.

As an aside, I am willing to sell up to 1/3 ($500) of my action if anyone wants to come along for the ride. I will be travelling for most of July so won't get many games in that month.

  • Not nut hugging, but I think ur gonna make some monies.

With 100 BI I would play on tilt tho, not stars, simply bc of field sizes.
  • We are a lot alike, except for the live poker part, but as for the ups and downs like when I was playing for you, the first part at the start I was raring to go and excited and things were going well so was happy for the most part, then I hit the brick wall and nothing going my way and I was pretty down after a bit.

As for mtt's, I would suggest full tilt, smaller fields then stars and I have done better on full tilt mtt's,lol I say 180 man's are good to play or any of the many gtd tournaments they have.

Just be prepared to be soul crushed quite a few times;), but I think you will do good. :)

dammit, will you stop beating me to the punch:mad::D
  • Day 1 -- played 4 low limit MTTs -- 1 bubble, 2 ITM, 1 FT. Mostly small fields as I prefer non NLH games. I think I'll have to play on both Stars and FTilt to be able to get more PLOs going. Fuck, I forgot how long a final table can take...I don't know if I'll have the patience to stay at these limits.

Anyone have a rule of thumb regarding bankroll and rebuy MTTs? I re-bought 5 times in a $5PLO (I know it's just $5 but I'm trying to work within some bankroll management rules) and added on and I don't know how people factor in rebuy volatility into bankroll management...that's a $35 buy-in right there. I always feel that I have edge on the field in PLO MTTs but am unsure if I should cut myself off at a certain # of rebuys. I placed third and made the money back, but is there a correct management strategy for these?

My games tend to have smaller fields -- I play mostly PLO and mixed games.

Oh well then, I think you will do really good:), you can probably do both full tilt and stars then.

Generally I account for 7 units in rebuys (don't play them often). So if my max bi is $10 then I am looking at $1-$2 rebuys.

  • I think you need to find a home game/local club where most of the players are the same crowd every week. I find this is the most enjoyable form of poker. There is a social component to the game every week and its nice to shoot the shit when the game gets slow. Grinding it out online or at a casino is really boring for me. I don't mind hitting the casino every couple months, but I couldn't do it every week.

Right now I usually play at a 1/2 game in Scarborough or a 2/5 game at a club in Mississauga. I have been playing at the Scarborough game for over two years now, off and on. I try other clubs but always seem to end up back at the Scarb game more because I enjoy it socially and its a fun crowd.

I think you will get pretty bored of MTT pretty fast.

Maybe having a goal of trying to win an entry in the WSOP main event, WPT or EPT event might keep your mind in the game?

My other suggestion would be to get involved in the game from a different perspective. Maybe write some articles, try coaching, start a new poker related site, whatever, just to still be involved in the game but from a new perspective.

I just apply the same rules as normal. If my average non rebuy BI is 15 dollars I'll play a 5 dollar rebuy with a maximum of 1 rebuy and 1 addon (don't rebuy if I but before the addon). If my average BI is 20 dollars I'll do 2 rebuys 1 addon
  • I think planning 5 rebuy's is normal on average. (double rebuy, go bust, double rebuy, add on)

Rich is right though, 1r+1a just count as a tripple sized tourny. Obv you're going to do both.
  • $1500 probably isn't even enough for $12/180 man turbos. So I can see how it definitely wouldn't be enough for ABI of $15 where fields are going to be >500 runners. The variance in poker these days is huge and you have to adjust your bankroll properly.

That being said, try the 90-180 mans, lower runners = less variance altho the variance in the games can easily be 100+ buyins.

Also a volume of a 100 won't be enough to show you much results unless you run hot like the run. Volume is key and you could probably play 50 90/180 mans in a day if you 8 tabled them for 6 hours.
  • Playing a large percentage of my games as PLO MTT (abi $20 or so I think), I think I might have some good info for you.

First off, I don't adhere to any bankroll management.....I play to make money, so I don't want to piss around in too many micro bi's (although I will play them to fill my tables), and I don't keep my balance usually at any more than 1K.

If you are a good PLO MTT player you can expect a very high cashing percentage (ie. 20 - 30% will be easy to achieve). I think 100 bi's is a little nitty for PLO. With a $1500 br, I wouldn't hesitate to play up to $30 freezeout and up to $10 RB's (PLO rebuys even going super tight playing only all nut and big draw hands, I've blown through many a b/i). I don't cap myself, just reload and continue to play as you can....it's too +ev a tourney to cap yourself imo.

Tournies I like to play nightly on Stars are the $30 PLO f/o @ 20:30 MST, $10 PLO 1r+1a @ 21:15. 1st in these are usually around 700 - 1k. If you add in the $24 PLO on FTP @ 19:15 & $5 PLO @ 21:15, you have 4 you can play nightly.

The best tournies I have found on either are the PLO $10+ R's in the morning....Stars is 08:30 MST (usually , FTP is 11:30 (I think). They both have decent guarentees, soft fields, and are the best ev tournies online I have played.

    Thanks,

I've had to play mostly cash the past 2 weeks I haven't had the time for MTTs -- I have a high ITM historically in PLO MTTs -- imo they are the softest games out there so I will probably stick to them when/if I ever have the time
  • Ftr the 130 10r on FTP I've ftd the last 2times I've played and i'm terrible at plo

    u should easily crush this

11:30 am for us in the MST....yeah, that's the one I noted below, probably my favourite tourney on FTP, although I only get to play on the weekends.
  • Meh, I've gone back to cash games for the most part -- I just dont have the time for these...I have been doing well at the stud8 and razz tables on stars lately up to 30 60 though:)
