Bad dealers
Hey guys,
I was in Brantford over the weekend playing 2-5, I've been down a couple of times and generally have found most of the dealers to be generally quite good. However, this one dealer was an absolute moron. In a span of an less than an hour he had almost incorrectly awarded 2 pots, skipped players waiting to act, had asked the button for the action first on a river card, dealt someone in who hadn't posted their BB, etc., etc., etc. It was getting slightly annoying (although I wasn't even involved in any of the hands due to cold cards). What's the best way to address this? Talk to the pit boss privately? I didn't want to be a jackass, but it really got distracting to have to correct the dealer at least once an orbit.
P.S.
I don't know if it's holiday tourist season or what, but I found this table made the .50-1 limit players online look like sharks...

I generally find that most online games I play in are much better then the majority of B&M games I partake in. Especially true when talking about something like 2/5 at Brantford.
As for the dealer, perhaps he was fairly new to dealing hold em'. If you play with him again and nothing has changed I would discuss it with the pit boss if you feel so inclined but for now, lets give the guy a chance.

Let me tell you the first few times you get into the box is nerve wrecking. You have 11 players watching you. I know it was hard my first time.
She was extremely hot too, and trust me, that sucks when you are trying to concentrate.
It doesn't sound like this happened, and I'm proud that Canadians tend to handle these sticky situations far better than most.
There's actually one thing that's worse and I witnessed it repeatedly at the Golden Nugget. The one thing that's worse is bitching and moaning about how bad the dealers are, and how much better the dealers are at "insert casino here". And, then talking about how bad the dealer is, like they weren't there to hear. If I had a baseball bat, I would have whacked a few Grumpy old men who would not utter a word except for how bad the dealers were. How many of us have never made an error while working?
There's only one way to handle. Discreetly talk to the Floor Manager and inform them about your beef. They will ensure it's handled properly. And, if not, then a new cardroom is in order.
--- One instance where it was way cool, where a dealer made an error.
I'm sitting at the Golden Nugget playing some 4/8 in a pretty relaxed atmosphere. There's a good mixture of players, including a couple of young guys sitting next to me. We're having some fun and yaking it up. A new guy comes to the table, likley in his 40's with a huge arrogant attitude. You could just feel it.
One hand where the pot is quite huge even before the turn which brings a second spade. There's quite a bit of betting and Arrogant&40 is raising it up with the young guy next to me. Everyone drops out after the second re-raise. And the pot is capped.
Not sure how it happens, but the Dealer inadvertently turns over a card before the final action on the turn. The card is not the final flush card. A&40 calls the floor and makes a big stink. He says "sorry son, but we gotta follow the rules". The floor rules that the live cards must be shuffled, and a burn and turn must occur for the river. A&40 says "I hate to do that to ya son, but that's the way it goes." The river brings the third spade and also pairs the board. But A&40, is well, arrogant and can't see that his flush paired the board. Well, they cap the river. The young guy doesn't say anything and had the class to not say "sorry to have to do that to you, old f*(*ing fartman". He just scooped the pot with his full house.
Cheers
Magi.
I would appreciate any thoughts you have about the nugget (or other poker rooms in LV). Planning a trip later this year and I am trying to decide where to spend my time playing Hold'em. Looking to profit, for sure, but also want to have fun (usually those are one and the same) so I don't want to play with too many old curmudgeons or any Joe Rockhead tuff-guy-know-it-alls.
Anyone else feel free to chip in (maybe this should be a new thread?)
If you are telling me that the clowns I have seen yelling and complaining when a mistake is made are tame compared to our southern neighbours, then I am glad I don't play elsewhere.
When I was a new dealer (back in the good ol charity days) my first shift was probably the worst ever witnessed by the 10 unlucky people to be seated there. I think I went A-Z in the 'mistakes you can make dealing' book. At lease I was too dumb to know how annoying these mistakes really are.
I manage to remember that every time a dealer makes any kind of error.
It helps.
Perhaps a new thread, but what the heck.
Nugget -- Great non-smoking room which is completely separate from the casino. The nice part -- there's no smoke in the room. Most poker rooms are non-smoking by the there is no physical separation from the rest of the casino. The part I didn't like, is that I love the sound of slot machines, and general casino chatter. It felt lilke a library. Doyle was a regular there at the time, so it was cool seeing Bobby Baldwin, Sammy Farah, Phil Ivey, and many more at the 2,000 4,000 table. By far, this room has the highest number of grumpy old men. I was staying there, so that's where I played the most. The games are good, with a nice mixture of rocks, casual regulars, young gamblers, and many dealers for some reason (not sure why so many dealers play the nugget??)
Bellagio -- If you want to make money, this is the place to go. Lots of affluent folks that enjoy the game. Most players are there to have fund and the dealers yack it, and it's a great time. I look around my table and I spot two nice rolexes. New guy comes to the table and says "hey nice watch, I got mine from the president of Rolex....". In a few more minutes another guy sits down with another rolex. I was glad I wasn't wearing a watch. The last guy with the Rolex later says "you know I can come here with 500 bucks play a couple of hours and have fun. I lose that much in 10 minutes at the black jack table. I get way more out of this". And, there you have it!!
The annoying players don't tend to be grumpy old men. Instead they are bitchy middle age women. Their husbands won't listen to them, so they are love to chat incesantly about how good they play and about everything else.
The problem with this room is that where there's money to be made, there are lots of people who want it -- beware of the very good players, and cheating. Generally the very good players don't play limits up to 10/20 or 20/40, but they are there. I know of a few pros that only play the 10/20 there. They've since moved up, but one can make a living at these levels and that's where they start.
Cheating happens when there's lots of money to be made. I have to post my nice pair story. Suffice to say, there was an obvious team which joined my table. I quickly got a table change, but the team left with too many racks of chips.
What I really loved about this place was the cognac. I was dying for some cognac and was willing to pay for some. So, i ask the waitress, how much it would be for cognac (I guess that was a dumb question in the Bellagio, but hey I love to be like Rodney Dangerfield). She says it's complimentary and will bring it over. It was some really good Remy in a nice snifter. Gotta love that!!!
Mirage -- Lots of money here, as well. But, it's not "the" place to go for money. So, there are some grumpy old men and lotsa young guns.
I found the ceilings too low, and the smoke was too much. If you play the high limits 30/60 or higher, they have a different room. I didn't see it..
For low limit 2-8 spread limit, the Monte Carlo is a nice quaint place. Lots of old rocks, young gamblers and casual tourists which don't know the game well.
Have fun!!
I went with a few buddys to AC over the Canada Day weekend last year.
We played at three places:
Tropicana: Reasonably nice room, good action, they run daily tourneys as well
Taj Mahal: Largest Room (like 75 tables) so lots of action. Players there (at least at the tables I was at) seemed more loose aggressive than usual. Chips were very dirty, looked like they hadn't been washed in years. Cool points though: You can order a pizza off or Chinese takeout from out on the boardwalk and they will deliver it right to your table in the card room. Then people are eating while playing - maybe why the chips are so dirty :-) This is the room that is shown in the movie Rounders
Borgata: Far and away the nicest room of all of them. Plasma screens showing computerized waiting list so you knew exactly where your name was. Very comfortable seating and great atmosphere.
The Sands also has a room but it is very small and when we checked it out there was just one table going so we didn't play.
Regarding your Vegas question: I was there in November and Bellagio is definitely the place to be at.
Having said that there are some excellent dearlers at Brantford. Some are brutal.
I'd agree with scooter ... Brantford has some very good dealers, and a few on the other end of the spectrum as well ... but overall, more good than bad, imho.

I remember 2 very good dealers, some average dealers, and a whole bunch of really poor dealers. It was amazing how many exposed cards, flashed cards, arguments over rules, and pots pushed to the wrong person occurred there in a typical session. I think because it's a temporary casino that some of the dealers are either green or rusty. My experiences at Rama and Brantford were that the dealers were pretty good overall.
