No 5k HU Event in 2010 for the Canadian Poker Open?

So the last 2 years there have been the $5,000 Canadian Poker Open Heads Up event in Calgary but I can't find any info for this year? Does anyone know if this event is not running this year?

  • It is probably to early for it to be posted. Does it not usually take place in the fall?
  • 2009 it was in May
  • Ok, just got an email from the CPT and they said they are waiting for approval from Alberta Gaming which should take about a week from now and the Canadian Poker Open will be mid August.
  • Just found this post and it sounds like you got in touch, I am very excited for what is planed and once they get everything approved expect 100% of the details here.

PS, it had been held in May in previous years, the decision this year was to wait until after WSOP hangover.....a lot of 5k HU players will obviously be committed to Vegas for a bit. It will also allow for ample time to make this one of the biggest event series seen in Canada yet!

Hey jontm..it seems like your a part of the CPT team, sorry if your not? If so, can you guys please work on getting more heads up tournaments? Maybe even a smaller buyin like 1.5k, 2.5k or something? Heads up players kinda get shafted in the live poker scene..maybe because it occupies so many tables. If I want to play the 5k event I'm gonna have to sell about half my action but would be cool if all the live HU events were not 5k or 10k. Thanks
  • Also if this is being held mid August when is the earliest I can pre-register for it? Would like to know so I work on selling percentages.
  • We should have everything approved in the next week or so, I will be sure to get you the Pre-reg info ASAP. And yes, I am now working for the CPT so shoot any questions and I will ask the powers that be if I can't answer them. Will be back shortly.
  • You nailed the answer to the smaller buy in heads up yourself, the extra tables it takes to run them also adds up to huge staffing needs and the rake gets unreasonable fast, but at a larger buy-in is not as much of an issue as it is reasonable percentage. Holding smaller buy-ins HU would be great, but hard to sell to the casino and still have the players happy. Also, while there is no doubt alot of players who love HU and are good at it, not so easy to get even some players with great MTT results to take the plunge. It is a game for the elite, most others are scared of it when it comes down to it, they save their money. That's what makes it a great tourney though, the best scrapping it out!
  • Yeah true..I expect some to play some of the best HUSNG players online in this tournament, a few of them already told me they may be coming. A lot of the pros you see on TV are gonna be underdogs in this event...for example Phil Hellmuth is pretty damn horrible at HUSNG.
