preflop 3-bet range

assuming you are up against one opponent who is a TAG and you have position on him, what is your preflop 3-bet range? what is your calling range?

assume stack sizes are approximately equal (around 100 BBs each).

is this too general a question? do you need further details?

i'm curious to hear opinions, because i don't think i'm taking advantage of 3-betting preflop enough.

  • Well if you 3 bet I would want position against a aggressive opponent, as for calling range it depends on how much he 3bets, if he 3 bets alot I am calling a wider range, if he only 3 bets like 2% of the time I may even fold QQ(depends what mood I am in:p).

    But this is just me.:)

    Edit:

you said you had position, lol for the record I am on a very lack of sleep.
  • In position, I'll 3xbet with 1010+, AQs+ against a TAG. Against a LAG, who's been raising A LOT preflop, I might open it up a bit more, say 77+, AJs+. OOP, I'll 3xbet with the standard big hands...AKo, AKs, QQ+.

Calling 3xbets, I prefer calling with medium pairs 77-JJ, maybe QQ if the raiser is really tight, hoping to hit my set, but only if both our stacks are full. I'll normally let the short stack off the hook more so, especially if he's playing any kind of tight short stack strategy.

My own 3xbet% is not really great ( I think its around 12%, but I could be wrong), but every once in awhile I'll throw one out with air, depending on the other(s) in the hand. I don't like to 3xbet too often though as it gets recognized almost immediately if you repeatedly 3xbet on the same table.

Just want to add, I play mostly micro cash atm, and not many sng's or mtt's at all. Most of what I said above can be considered for both cash and tourney situations I would imagine though.

    If he 3bets a lot I'm 4 betting with 68s+
