Canadian WSOP "unknown" hopefulls?

I know some Alberta guys that have gone deep, BC shouldn't be tough nor Ontario and quebec, but with the exception of Blondefish, if you could chose one player in each province that had a shot and has done well in the past, who would it be?

I am gonna pose the same question in the regional forums, but am stuck for Manitoba as where to find them and the Atlantic provinces.

Any tips? PM me if you do and you think they may want to tell their story. Also, can you direct m to any lesser known regional forums I can look to talk to admin or post in?

  • Well certainly no slam on Blondefish as he's a pretty solid tournament player but there are many others here in Ontario that I have personally played with that I would put well up there if they ever had the chance. I won't name them as I'm not sure they would want their names publicized, Two of them are Milton Rocks young guns. There are at least 4 or 5 from the Orangeville/Ontario/Ching Hill poker leagues that would easily compete and win if they had the opportunity and the bank roll. Of this fact I have zero doubt...
  • For the record, I know that compuease is NOT talking about me, but I appreciate his discretion in this matter. :(

lol, nor myself, however I did finish 7th (out of 195) in the AC Borgata's weekly $250. tourney yesterday.... :) More to come in a trip report published tomorrow, hopefully...
  • Absolutely, I was going to try to do this all via PM and have just edited the post. I am specifically lookig for player who want their story told. Some it is about fam and glory, the other fortune, I often have to leave names out. So this thread is clear,it is about publicity for Canadian WSOP hopefulls who have played, done well (Day 3 or better) and want people to know it. I have alot of trouble getting ahold of Graham quickly, so I though I would start this off in a little more open manner. This forum is my greatest resource for reaching out.
  • Who is this blondefish character we speak of?:D
  • Johnathan Plens obv

    +1 tournament beast....great guy....
  • I have a great fit for Ontario, Being such a large province it might be nice to have two, does Jonathan post here as well? Quite a player profile, however I think a forum friend could be the next Duncan Bell story too.

Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces, now that is a challenge. On my way to Grey Eagle to see a Winnipeg friend and whether he has any leads.....
  • Dave Scharf but he's from Saskatoon. Devin Armstrong would also be a good prospect for Ontario.

how could we forget Devin and his wsop final table, geeeeeeeesh;):p
  • Dave is interesting and I see he started the first Canadian Poker magazine and was involved in creating the CPT years ago. Love to talk him, but my search also found PFC posts that he had been inactive here for awhile. I am sure we could have a long healthy chat. Anyone know to get in touch? Put it in a Private Message please if you do. I found a phone number I will try but it is 5 years old. It seams he has turned to writing about running if I have found the same guy?
  • All right! I found Dave. One way or another that takes care of Saskatchewan. Keep em coming, you guys are great. I will make sure the forum is plugged in this.
  • Just go to pocket5s, select by province. Research done.
  • You may also want to consider Kara Scott for Alberta.

Dave S. can be found on twitter under RamblingDave

or the pocket 5's thingy said above.
  • WOW.

    Lots of irrelevant names ITT.

If we are ignoring the relevant "Known's" like Watts, Mizzi, Timex (when his time comes) the you have to at least list relevant names in todays game, and not time warp.

    I agree with plehns.

    How about Ryan G. Hall?

    Casey Jarzabeck (Bigdogpckt5s)?
  • Yes, I was thinking Plens and Sir Watts as candidates.

Another candidate is Scott Montgomery... final table as WSOP 2008 ME and went deep in an LA poker classic and I believe WSOPE a year ago. Not a big fan of some of the plays I saw during the 2008 WSOP broadcast, but you are only seeing a small percentage of real hands.
  • I signed up on pocket 5s can not find the verification e-mail though, have to try again, not in junk folder either. Dave was a really nice guy, but he competes in running now, out of the loop but I guy I would to listen to and will be talking to him more. Had a huge role in poker in Canada. Well, this thread is keeping me busy researching, thanks for all the info and leads.

what are your plans for this unknown crop of players?
  • I am writing a poker magazine article. I want to feature a) Canadians b) true players who bust thier ass to get there, have a true love for the game and are real.
Grass roots. It's so easy to write a story after someone makes it big. And even if these players don't they get a little recognition for having the balls to try. It ain't easy, even to cash. We all know that.
  • BC, Ontario (a forum member), Alberta found. Great fits. Think I have Manitoba wrapped too. Having a blast!
  • And it's a wrap. Coming to a casino and magazine racks near you this June. Players were all great to talk with.

    Thanks all for the leads!
  • Roxy24 from Stoney Creek. She is a pokerstars rep, and plays all kinds of games. I'm not sure of her NLHE, but she wins at HORSE and plays in the nosebleed sections of Omaha 8 cash game.
  • i think if i had the bankroll i could go far. i came in 2nd for the $100 at brantford. i recently went vegas in february and came in 1st in the 150 bounty event and 1st in the $85 at ceasars. but everyone knows you need a big bankroll to even think of entering events at the wsop. taking into account the hotels, food, buy ins, i'd say a sold 15k is needed (based on entering events of buy ins no more than $2.5k). i guess i'll have to wait for napt at fallsview!
