a tourney with partners

to change it up a little bit, for one game, 19 buddies and I are going to play a NLHE tourney partnered up. Partners will be chosen randomly and the way it will work is that you will play 5 hands and then your partner will take over for 5 hands. Back and forth like that. Have any of you ever played in such a game before?

We have just 2 rules in place so far, 1) no looking at your partner's cards and 2) no coaching.

Looking for any tips, opinions or suggestions to help make this a good time.

EDIT: our next 16 man heads up match should be interesting too. I am going to draw names and allow that person to pick his opponent. Should work exactly like it did in school when all the good players were picked first only it will be reversed this time. Should make for some good controversy lol but that's another thread...

  • I don't like the idea of trusting someone random to play well..but I LOVE the dramathon you're creating with your HU matches.
Have you considered allowing a set number of 'coaching' ? (like maybe one chance to consult your partner each) I think that could be fun.

Let us know how it turns out.
  • Played a couple's tourney on Valentines Day with the g/f once....they cut the field in two.....play one stack one blind level, then switch to the other stack next blind level.

Really fucked up, build your stack on one table...get moved to the g/f's nitty shortstack....build it up, just to find your big stack on the other table is now gone.....or maybe it was the other way?

Anyhow, it was fun as a couple, as you both got to play a full game (at least until one stack was eliminated), but don't think I'd like your format, as you'll basically be sitting out half the time.

OR not even get to play at all! lol I imagine there will be some steam in the room if someone busts in <5 hands lol

I do like your game though, play two different stacks. You have to think twice as much don't you? Our's will have the same effect to a degree. You can build up the stack only for your partner to give all away again.

yeah, that should be hilarious. There will be some hurt feelings and quite possibly some tilting right off the bat lol

Yes, I have considered a "time out" when faced with a decision that could cost you your tournament life. Someone bets more than you have, you can talk to your partner so that there is equal blame to share....for that time at least
  • I think this would be hilarious if they did a WSOP partner style. Where the tournament never stops and runs like 3 days straight, 24 hours a day. You have to change partners whenever you want. Marathon session. 0 breaks.
  • The tournament was played on Saturday. We had 18 people signed up and naturally had 1 no show which offset our numbers, so one person went alone. We drew random names and I ended up with my brother as my partner.

We did do the 5 hands and then switch and we also allowed each person a one time, 1 minute time out at any point during a hand that they were in to consult with their partner.

I think it went off pretty good. I had nothing but positive feedback from the players. The only drawback afaic was the noise and distraction level. It was off the chart at times. People that were waiting for their turn would be chatting it up with players also waiting and even players at the table, also playing a side cash game too at one point.

The format made you think about your play more. You only got 5 hands at a time and you had to make sure and resist the urge to play garbage hands just for the sake of playing something. On average, each 5 hands took about 10 mins or so.

For my personal horror story about this game, see this thread ugh!
