High Stakes Poker (TV Show) on Sportsnet

Hey all

I was flipping through the channels and noticed that High Stakes Poker was on. IN HD! It was the first episode of the current season. It was on at 1 pm Fri pst (4 pm Est). My shaw listing had it as some other poker show but the Sportsnet website had it listed as HSP.

    Thank You:)
  • Does poker really need to be watched in HD? Weird that HSP would be on a channel other than GSN though.

If I'm not mistaken...but I thought GSN isn't available in Canada
  • Thought it was entertaining, but Gabe needs someone to rein him in a little . . .

I have Bell Satellite and get GSN. It's also available through digital cable AFAIK.

@Milo, yes, it's pretty disappointing that they took AJ off and left Gabe in the booth to make jokes alone. Now that it's sponsored by pokerstars they have pretty much turned it into the high stakes cash game version of PAD. They really need to get rid of Kara Scott, or at least put her in the booth with Gabe. We don't need interviews with the players after big pots, or that insanely stupid "Did you know" segment. Thankfully the action has been decent so far. But if they want to keep viewers they're really gonna need to rethink the setup for next season. I am looking forward to when Mike Matusow comes back on. Hopefully he creates a lot of action. And also when Dennis Phillips shows up. Should be interesting to see how he holds up against these players.
  • Yea I get GSN with my Digital cable! :) GTV is good too, poker all night!!!
  • Ivey pushes Phil Helmuth out of a pot preflop.

Durrr, "Here's $2K to show any pair higher than Jacks"
  • Players seem to not rebuy ... nobody wants to play Ivey and Durr... strange :-)
  • I stand corrected about GSN...
  • I've been watching it on pokertube. Sportsnet is like 3 episodes behind. It was nice to watch Hellmuth get felted so early. haha. Play so tight folding AQ. First couple of episodes have been pretty uneventful, the latest one I liked though.
  • I loved the first episode. Hellmuth got so owned.

2nd episode was not so good. 3rd and 4th iirc, i liked.

I'm going to watch episode 1 again :)

I was disappointed to see Helmuth go!!

I'd love to have seen him rebuy and loose 7 figures...

They should have *paid* for him to stay.

    Helmuth straddeling... who's have thunk.
  • I really believe they made a horrible decision to get rid of Benza. Gabe needed him around to provide a target. The show almost seems boring with the new commentary style. The poker is still great, but now it's missing something. As Derrickone said, bring Kara Scott into the booth or something.
  • yeah just noticed this on the other day as well. i tend to watch them online anyway, but still good to know it's on sometimes.
  • Could someone explain the hard on that everyone has for AJ Benza? He's a fucking clown. He knew nothing about poker and wasn't funny at all. Great combination. It's a huge step in the right direction; now they just need to get rid of Kaplan who is even worse because he *thinks* he knows something about poker but doesn't.

I really hope this is a level. Gabe has been playing poker for decades, and he's done real well at it too. Sure, AJ didn't seem to be the most knowledgeable but the two made a great combination in the booth. That being said, I doubt many people are watching HSP for the commentary anyways.
  • For those who like watching the poker brat get killed, check out the show "The Poker Den" (I think that's what it's called). It's a british cash game.

In 1 of the seasons, Tony G had position on Phil and basically crushed him. It's a pretty good show.

there's nothing like watching helmuth get his ass kicked...

And then watch the inevitable interview where he tries to build himself up as a better player than those who just crushed him......really funny.

Negraneau put a note on twitter not too long ago saying he got off the phone with Helmuth and that Phil said he was going to try and work on his game to come up to date. It's been a long time since helmuth had the game to back up his mouth. The final table at Bay 101 might be the start of a resurgence if he has indeed decided to work on his game.
  • Is there a time of day where there isn't a poker show anymore? I don't watch as much poker on tv anymore, but IMO poker is probably the best filler/commercial show ever!

Think I saw that...it was great....Tony G sucks at poker, but man, he's good t.v. IMHO.

Crappy thing about the Euro shows is that bloody english announcer.....that motherfucker drives me nuts.
  • Yeah Tony G was very motivated to 'show the world' that he's better than Phil.

I think the poker den had american and british commentators. The show's filmed over a 24 hour period IIRC, so one of the seasons had the commentators kinda go insane for a few moments with lack of sleep. giddy insane.

Phil eliminated from WPT event (shame it wasn't better quality):

lol...somebody call an ambulance...the prima donna is crying lol
  • Is it normal that they wait about 5 minutes before the next hand after a player busts, or is it just so Phil can go through his schtick? Do you think they stopped the clock?
