  • I will be playing and say hi to you.

I hadn't heard that rumour. Very interesting.
  • I will be there too, but you know what I look like.

It has been full for a couple of months now.
  • I work there and I don't know of any television plans
  • Watched Port Perry CPT Major Event yesterday (was on standby list but too far down). Those guys put on an amazing Tournament, possibly the classiest Tournament anywhere in the country. Each player received a GBH Casino wristwatch (they even had men's and ladies' watches for the respective genders) and a CPT pin. The winner took home over $36K, a keeper Trophy, a 14K gold engraved bracelet, a Casino jacket, CPT cap and a CPT first place gold medal. They served an incredible seafood buffet for the first three player's breaks and then fruit, pastries and so on for the rest of the player's breaks. I was told that registration for all 2005 events opened that day and promptly registered for all of the events They will run 9 Tournaments next year, four will be CPT Majors.

Serious action all day long with live games opening as soon as Tournament tables closed, I played in a good $20-$40 game most of the day.

Top notch dealers and great floor people sure helped, their experience showed, I learned this was their third Tournament of Champions at Port Perry. The guy in charge, older fellow named Lee was around all day making players and spectators feel welcome; answering questions; listening to ideas. It was fun talking to him, great sense of humour and it was clear he's been around Poker Rooms for a very long time, mind you he did piss me off when I found out he had lost over 130 lbs in the last 8 or 9 months (I told him I found them and he generously said I could keep them). Would have loved to participate (cool watches and I love oysters) but look out guys I'll be there next year.
  • Thanks for report. I was going to forget mentioning the spread. It looked like good food but I arrived early to have a big breakfast. I didn't know it would be complimentary later!

I was a bit concerned when first sitting down at the table as the dealer was greeting everyone by name (except me). He also stated 'Hmmm, it looks like a bit stronger field this year.' It seemed like everyone at the table had either 'just got in last night' or 'was going to such and such tournament next week'. Ok, so as at least one other person on this forum knows, perhaps the tournament of champions wasn't the best choice for my 1st casino tourney.

Hey, I still had a great time. I had to 'sit out' a bit and continue folding hands when my 1st big play backfired. I raised to 200, was reraised to 800 and my allin had me reaching for the double rebuy. It was just a bad beat my KK (with a K on the turn!) lost to his K7o. At least I got my chips back later with QQ after the rebuys.

I was in it nearly four hours and a few people from my table were sent to the rail. I know I left nearly all my blinds undefended so I'll be working on that in some smaller online tourneys. Clearly playing only premium hands is not enough.

I'll likely play in another CPT event next year at Rama. I'm a non smoker and that was the only thing that bothered me at GBH.

Hopefully we'll hear from some others who were there. Now I'll really have to get the magazine to find out who finished in the money. I don't know if 'froggy' reads these forums but hope you did well as you were still in it.

  • Thanks for the nice words pokerplyr, glad you had a good time. The answer is yes, I've been around Poker rooms for more years than I care to remember, but calling me an older guy...that hurt ;). Say hi next time your in.
  • Hey Lee only meant in the nicest way and with all respect.
  • Hi Lee,

I have been playing GBH for a while and all the local tournaments at the GBH, Rama, and Brantford.

I have to say your tournamets are the best run, and I always look forward to them.

I would only ask if you could have more of them. I understand you have limited space, and closing your tables to tournaments can hurt the bottom line, but the Blackjack tables close to the poker area are not used other than on weekends.

Any chance you could move them(temporay during the week), add two or three extra poker tables and have regualar 30, 40 person tournamets?

Have a look at this thread: http://pokerforum.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=2052

It is not meat as a criticism, but jut a point of view.

I will introduce myself next time I see you.

  • Hi Rob,
Would love to have more tables but we are bound by strict rules from the Gaming Commission; none more difficult than "any change in the layout of the Casino needs pre-approval from the Commission"...not an easy task requiring blueprints, trial runs for surveillance cameras and so on. We added 3 more Tournaments to the schedule this year and are working on adding more tables but it is a slow process.

Thanks for the compliment Rob, looking forward to meeting you.
  • I'll be there March 9th at the CPT 'major event'. Hopefully others from the forum will register as well, if they haven't already.
  • I'd like to make the drive and register. Can anyone tell me the cost and if there are any spots left. Maybe the GBHshftmgr can let me know if I go in two weeks my odds of getting a spot.

    Cheers
    Magi
  • The cost is $240 for March 9th, but they also have ones that are $120. You have to pay the entire entry up front, not just the $20 or $40 fee. As for whether or not it's sold out, you should probably call before you drive up there.

  • Check out their website. I think the one in Jan is sold out.
  • there is no tournament in January.

I am going there tomorrow. I will post what is availible.

  • Hi guys,

I brought a printout of the rules home with me and it has a list of the dates. They are:

    Feb. 9
    March 9 - double pot
    April 13
    June 8
    July 13 - double pot
    August 10
    October 12
    Nov. 9 - double pot
Dec. 14 - tournament of champions

Every one that is a 'double pot' is $200 + $40. The rest are $100 + $20, except the tournament of champions, and I'm not sure what the buy-in is for that one.

All tournaments are rebuy/add-on tournaments. Rebuys are $50 or $100, depending on the tournament, and they are unlimited for the first hour. Not sure if you rebuy if you bust, or if you can rebuy when you fall below a certain number of chips. Add-on's are $100 or $200, also depending on the tournament. So, for a 'double pot' tournament I'd expect to spend about $500, and for a regular tournament it would probably be $250.

    Regards,

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The February event is sold out, there are already 25 entrants for the March CPT Major event. The "double-pot" events are CPT majors. We usually sell out Tournaments about 1½ months in advance, the best bet is to call 1-888-294-3766 (toll-free) ext. 209 please note: this extension is for the Cash Cage to find out how many spots are available for any Tournament, the Poker Pit is ext. 263. The entry for the Tournament of Champions is $200+$40.

If any of you folks ever pop in to the Casino please say hi
  • Thanks for the info aces and gbh! Looks like I'll have to head out early to register for the March tourney. I'll stop by and say hellow.

    Cheers
    Magi
  • He beat me to it.

    Feb - Sold out
    March - I bought ticket # 26 of 88
April - 17 tickets are sold of 88

For those of you who are playing, see you in Feb and March.

    Rob M.
  • i must make a trip and buy tickets for those events
  • I'm also thinking of registering for the March and April events. Should be a friendly crowd.

  • How long do these tournaments usually run? Blinds incease slowly or double up?
Is there always a buffet? (20% seems a little high)
  • Hi Aces,

The Tournaments go from 10:00am and usually end between 19:00 (7:00pm) and 20:00 (8:00pm). Yes the buffets happen every Tournament and there is a buffet every player's break (at least 3 or 4 buffets during the day and coffee and croissants in the am while you register). Similar blind structure to Rama, blinds double. We've been running these for three years now and the prize pool goes up every event and each sells-out more quickly than the last ... we just might be doing a few things right. (But I'm always ready to listen to and consider any new ideas)

I suppose it might be best to ask players who have attended and see if they feel 20% was excessive for what they received.

I'm looking forward to saying hi to you in person aces, please introduce yourself next time you visit us.

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I must say the buffets at these events are amazing! There is a vareity of everything and if you love seafood like me you won't be dissapointed. Great food, great atmosphere, and playing the hottest game around...what more can I say!

  • I went this weekend and registered for the March 9 event. Holy crap what a drive if you don't take the 407 from Waterloo. I'm getting a f'n transponder for the event!

Tried to say hi to the GBH shiftmgr, but you were not around.

I'll see you on March 9, as well as the others here! Is there somewhere to stay overnight relatively cheap, as it is a long drive and I'm not really a morning person?

    Cheers

  • Geez Magi, sorry I missed you, looking forward to seeing you in March. Any of you folks dropping in please be sure and ask for Lee (that's me ;) )

    I will see you there!

For driving tips, Get off the 401 at Salem (before HWY 12), North to HWY 2(1 km.) turn east for about 2-3 km. Turn north on Lakeridge Road (Durham 23). 20-30 mins later you will pass Dagmar and then Lakeridge ski resorts.

Turn right at the next set of lights Goodwood Rd #21 ( landmarks, salt dome on South east corner, Radio Tower on North East). This road takes you into Port Perry. I have done this trip so many times, I think the car drives itself.

I avoid HWY 12 just because of the small towns and reduced speed limits. ( the drive from east Toronto is only 45 Mins.

    Good Luck!

I went on the foxwoods web site and they charge around 20% for their tournaments. They have 80+20 and 120+30. I don't know if they offer a free buffet or anything, but it seems to be a good deal to me.
