In need of some run good

This past week has been ridiculous. Hit a terrible down swing. Can't make a hand at all, and anytime I do, I'm either one upped, or they suck out. Luckily I'm a bankroll nit and it hasn't hit too hard, but fuck, it's seriously discouraging going this long and not getting anywhere.

  • welcome to the club!

wish we can pass around run good to each other on here, I feel exactly the same, let`s go get a drink and drown our sorrows:-\
  • If only it were that simple.
Also, way ahead of ya on the drinks.
  • If I were you, I'd take a couple days and just chill with the playing. Breakevenitis is never good. So just do some light poker reading, watch some shows, maybe even watch some of the stakes you play and just take notes (or watch a limit 1 or 2 above you and play 'spot the fish'... I did this yesterday at .5/1 and it was pretty fun). After a few days, come back fresh and just focus on playing good poker, F the past.

Here's my graph so far this year. At a glance it looks pretty awesome. But a closer look and you can see I've had several periods with 10k+ hand swings/breakevens. It sucks, but is part of the game. Some of those swings were made worse because of my play, but I think (hope) I've learned from them and improved.

Also might be a good idea to never look a graph shorter than "this month" or "this year".

you're missing a line on there
  • Also check out this player. He's been a consistent winner at .1/.25 for a disgusting # of hands (500+ thousand), but recently he's doing terribly. Obviously PTR doesn't catch every hand of every second of every day, but they are not too far off.

Seriously, I don't even understand how he could run this bad this long without having some serious tilt monkey on his back. His stats are so close to mine it makes me shudder to think this could be me >.<.

Sad thing is I've already done all this this month. Self excluded myself for a week. Spent that time watching some DC videos, going through some books, and re-evaluating a lot of hands. Came back after the week refreshed and everything started out good, started digging myself out of this hole and then it all went to shit again last week. Luckily I have a lot going on this week which isn't really leaving much time for poker and the time that I would spend playing I plan on doing a lot of reviewing.
  • ^lol doh. Well the bright side is, once you get over this hump, it's over :). Harder the struggle, the bigger the improvement. I think I read on here (or maybe it was something leatherass said in an interview), that everyone has 1 60k breakeven skid in their life (assuming they're winning players at the limit they're playing of course).

One thing you could do is find someone to do a 'sweat'. Where they watch you play or you send them a video of a session you played. Then they can give you some tips. This is something I'm considering doing because I think there are 2-3 huge holes in my game that I can't see. Until I figure out what they are, I don't think I'll be ready to move up.
  • I can only hope. I've actually been thinking about recording a video for a while now and getting someone to review it. Will probably start recording sessions when I get back into it. Done it in the past and find it's a lot better than sifting through hand histories. Also find it easier to spot leaks watching the videos. One of my biggest problems right now though is rush poker. There should really be a way to make the option to play rush disappear.

haha, see my new thread in stt strategy, I am thinking of doing videos as well!

    What are the chances?

    :bs:
  • Play some live poker.
  • Unfortunately I'm currently unemployed so live poker has taken a back seat to online poker for now. Believe me, I would much rather play live.

The other day I saw a HH that was 3 way all in. AA vs KK vs KK. AA lost. I'd say that's pretty sick. These ones imo aren't that terrible. You get the money in as a big fav, that's all you can do.

You just gotta keep plugging away and play good poker. You still haven't played that many hands, and you are up right? One day, when you move up and are no longer playing this limit, you'll wish more people played like them :).

Yeah, I'm not saying these are extraordinarily bad beats or anything, as I see it happen all the time. It's just ridiculous that it keeps happening over and over. Also, don't think I'm not happy seeing people play this way, I love it, as most of the time they're not gonna be hitting their miracle cards on the river.
  • Well it's about god damn time. I did something I figured I would probably regret and moved up a level while tilting a bit to chase some losses. Luckily I did have just over 20 buy ins for the level so it's not too bad, and it's definitely been going good. Finally.

Poker strategy for weathering bad runs
  • Bad runs are sort of like the in-laws of your poker experience. You know they’re inevitably going to show up, even if you aren’t always sure when or why, you know that no matter how hard you try, there’s nothing you can really do to make the experience any better, and, worst of all, once they’re around, there’s absolutely no telling when they’re going to leave.
This is one of the truest statements I have ever read. That was a good article, and I definitely recommend doing what it says. Just take it easy and only play when you feel you will be at your best. When you go to open up Tilt or Stars and you're immediately in a bad mood it's probably best to shut it down for a few days. And if you don't think you can, do a 3 day or a 7 day self exclusion. Then take the time and study your game, go through hand histories and most importantly, clear your head. As cliche as it sounds, the power of positive thinking can go a long way. I understand how shitty it feels when you've hit a bad run of cards and everyone is catching one outers on the river to stack you. But if you approach the game positively, eventually, good things will happen. And to prove to you that bad runs do end, and hopefully motivate you a little I'll post a few graphs.

    Here's January:

    March so far:

    2010 so far:

So just remember, it may take a while, but everything will start working out for you soon enough. And then you'll be really happy when people are calling off their whole stacks drawing to 2 outs.

You're running pretty much at EV -- you may need to examine your game
  • Did you move up to .1/.25 recently?
  • Yeah, mixing it up with some 10NL, but focusing more on 25NL. Got about 3k hands so far this month.
