Is poker a danger to my health

I thight I would share an incident that happened at a local game last weekend.
Some of you may have read some posts in the past about a local NLH game that we have. In short there has been up to $8000 on the table in one night, so the game can get pretty serious at times. We've been playing there for close to two years and have never had a problem........except for some heated discussion on some bad beats that happen every night. We try to keep it low key and only have players that someone knows enter the game. Well there was a new guy in town and he had been hanggin around the club for a couple weeks and seemed to be a decent guy once the owner got to know him, so after a while he was invited to play. Now I new this guy was definaltely shaddy the first time I saw him. He was about 6'6, balled, and had a huge bushy beard. I played against him a few times and he would always be receiving calls at 2 and 3 in the morning, he would leave for about a half hour and then would be back. So obviously his line of work was questionable.
So there was a game last weekend and they where playing till the wee hours saturday morning when decent guy went out to his truck to get a coffee (?), when he returned the action had past him and his hand was mucked (like always) and decent guy freeked out. He threw his coffe on the table and started saying that "this is how you win my money by mucking my hands" he was in for about $800 at the time. Anyways he procceded to pick up a chair and smash it over the owners head, and then bolted out of the club.
The owner was knocked out instantly, blood coming out of his head, mouth, and nose, the other players thought he was dead and called the cops and ambulance. He needed 11 staples in his head, and is still in the hospital but is going to be OK.
Turns out this decent guy has a huge rap sheet and goes under a few different names.
Just thought I'd share this with you guys. If anyone plans on playing in some unknow club be CAREFULL.

  • So he has no testicles?
  • Crazy story. I've heard horror stories like these, but have never experienced anything really bad first-hand. I may have told this story before (it was told to me, I wasn't there), but if I haven't....

Back when there were charity casinos, a not-too-bright owner of a private club would get his players by going to charities at closing time (2:00 am I think) and inviting random people to his game for the wee hours.

So EVERYONE knew about the game.

One night, he got back from the charities with a group of players in tow to find that two guys with guns had broken into his club while he was gone, and were waiting patiently for everyone to arrive. Then they proceeded to take everyone's money, jewelry, etc..., and tie them up. Then they waited until someone else came in, and did the same. They were there for a long time, like some sort of twisted welcoming party, and eventually left, with everyone broke and scared, but unharmed.

As wader said, if you plan on playing at an unknown club (particularly if there is a decent amount of money being wagered) be very careful.

  • This is one * of the reason's I don't play at semi-private or private clubs and stick to casino's, home games (where I know everyone), or the internet.

On the flip side, has anyone ever played at a club where security averted a situation?

    * some of the other reasons: collusion, other unfair play, house rake etc
  • I've never been at a club when there was a situation that needed to be resolved by security, but lately I've noticed that some of the bigger buy-in underground tournaments have been announcing that security is on hand to escort the winners to their cars.
  • I would feel a lot more comfortable if security was announced and visible during a tournament.

You don't want to engage the ScottyZ trunk monkey ninja if you don't have to! (the cost from the dealership to recharge a discharged trunk monkey is hella dollahz $$).

Not to mention the loss in horsepower after the trunk monkey has been released. He becomes too exhausted fending off the attack that he insists on sitting up front instead of pedalling the stationary bike in the trunk. And there's no talking to him about it otherwise until he gets a recharge (i.e. some bananas and a warm sponge bath). Surprisingly, the dealership offers good value for this work... take it from me, this is *not* something you want to be a do-it-yourself job.

Now all I need is a monkey ninja that is allowable at the poker table.

"What was that? You hit a 2-outer on me? Get 'em Bubbles."

As for the dangers of non-casino poker, I've been lucky enough to never have experienced anything like this myself. However, I'm never really played non-casino poker for these kinds of limits/buy-ins unless I knew the people playing quite well.

There may be some similarities to looking for an online site: security, cashout reliability, collusion, etc. I'd usually recommend sticking with well-established and well-populated sites online-- why not have the similar standards for club games? Obviously I'm not saying that this could somehow prevent this kind of thing from happening. Just throwing some ideas out there.
